Merry Christmas From A Land Of Hope And Sorrow, John M. Rudy Dec 2011

Merry Christmas From A Land Of Hope And Sorrow, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

I was driving home from work a few weeks ago, flipping through the radio stations and I came upon one of those dedicated progressive/modern/pop holiday formats you hear so often this time of year. I tarried, only planning to spend a moment there. It was a cover version of "O Holy Night" performed by Josh Groban. I'm not the biggest fan of Groban, so my hand instinctively went back to the dial when I stopped. [excerpt]

Sexuality Education, Eva Goldfarb, Norman A. Constantine Dec 2011

Sexuality Education, Eva Goldfarb, Norman A. Constantine

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Sexuality education comprises the lifelong intentional processes by which people learn about themselves and others as sexual, gendered beings from biological, psychological, and sociocultural perspectives. It takes place through a potentially wide range of programs and activities in schools, community settings, religious centers, as well as informally within families, among peers, and through electronic and other media. Sexuality education for adolescents occurs in the context of the biological, cognitive, and social-emotional developmental progressions and issues of adolescence. Formal sexuality education falls into two main categories: behavior change approaches, which are represented by abstinence-only and abstinence-plus models, and healthy sexual development …

Changes In Spirituality Partly Explain Health-Related Quality Of Life Outcomes After Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction., Jeffrey M Greeson, Daniel M Webber, Moria J Smoski, Jeffrey G Brantley, Andrew G Ekblad, Edward C Suarez, Ruth Quillian Wolever

Faculty Scholarship for the College of Science & Mathematics

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is a secular behavioral medicine program that has roots in meditative spiritual practices. Thus, spirituality may partly explain Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction outcomes. Participants (N = 279; M (SD) age = 45(12); 75% women) completed an online survey before and after an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypothesis that, following Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, the relationship between enhanced mindfulness and improved health-related quality of life is mediated by increased daily spiritual experiences. Changes in both spirituality and mindfulness were significantly related to improvement in mental health. Although the initial mediation hypothesis …

"What Is The Value Of Youth Work?" Symposium Booklet, Laurie Ross Oct 2011

"What Is The Value Of Youth Work?" Symposium Booklet, Laurie Ross

Local Knowledge: Worcester Area Community-Based Research

As a group of experienced and novice youth workers, we believe that youth work is fundamentally about building trust-filled, mutually respectful relationships with young people. We create safe environments for young people to connect with other supportive adults and peers and to avoid violence in their neighborhoods and their homes. We guide those harmed by oppressive community conditions such as racism, sexism, agism, homophobia, and classism through a process of healing. As we get to know more about young people’s interests, we help them develop knowledge and skills in a variety of areas including: academic, athletic, leadership/civic, the arts, health …

Rectitude In International Arbitration, William W. Park Sep 2011

Rectitude In International Arbitration, William W. Park

Faculty Scholarship

Few criteria for evaluating arbitrator independence and impartiality will stay foolproof for long, given how ingenious fools often prove themselves to be. No less than in other areas of the law, elaboration of ethical standards for arbitrators implicates a tension between the transient and the permanent. Conflict-of-interest principles remain most useful if implemented with sensitivity to new trouble spots. Traditional ethical models serve as starting points for evaluating the fitness of those to whom business managers and nations entrust their treasure and their welfare. The constant evolution in expectations by users of the arbitral system call for regular adjustment in …

Nonbelievers, Nelson Tebbe Sep 2011

Nonbelievers, Nelson Tebbe

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

How should courts handle nonbelievers who bring religious freedom claims? Although this question is easy to grasp, it presents a genuine puzzle because the religion clauses of the Constitution, along with many contemporary statutes, protect only religion by their terms. From time to time, judges and lawyers have therefore struggled with the place of nonbelievers in the American scheme of religious freedom. Today, this problem is gaining prominence because of nonbelievers’ rising visibility. New lines of social conflict are forming around them, generating disputes that have already gone legal. In this Article, I argue that no wholesale response will do. …

Nfatc1 Regulation Of Trail Expression In Human Intestinal Cells, Qingding Wang, Yuning Zhou, Heidi L. Weiss, Chi-Wing Chow, B. Mark Evers May 2011

Nfatc1 Regulation Of Trail Expression In Human Intestinal Cells, Qingding Wang, Yuning Zhou, Heidi L. Weiss, Chi-Wing Chow, B. Mark Evers

Surgery Faculty Publications

TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL; Apo2) has been shown to promote intestinal cell differentiation. Nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) participates in the regulation of a variety of cellular processes, including differentiation. Here, we examined the role of NFAT in the regulation of TRAIL in human intestinal cells. Treatment with a combination of phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) plus the calcium ionophore A23187 (Io) increased NFAT activation and TRAIL expression; pretreatment with the calcineurin inhibitor cyclosporine A (CsA), an antagonist of NFAT signaling, diminished NFAT activation and TRAIL induction. In addition, knockdown of NFATc1, NFATc2, NFATc3, and NFATc4 blocked PMA/Io increased …

The Company: Carnival Urbanism For Shrinking Cities, Brandon Peterson Apr 2011

The Company: Carnival Urbanism For Shrinking Cities, Brandon Peterson

Architecture Master Theses

THE COMPANY is a framework of urban intervention that seeks to stabilize shrinking neighborhoods through a large number of small-scale, temporary occupations of vacated buildings. Its process of quickly phasing in architecture and program over time, through testing and experimentation, is preferable to the slow, top-down planning of large-scale, more permanent initiatives. Its identity is that of spectacle and pleasure. Its architects are designers, developers, planners, sponsors, eventholders and actors.

The historic neighborhood of Brush Park in Detroit, Michigan is the first testing ground for THE COMPANY’s interventions. Its forty-four abandoned buildings will be adapted from post-industrial leftovers into catalytic …

"What's A Goin' On?" People And Place In The Fiction Of Edythe Squier Draper, 1924-1941, Aubrey R. Streit Krug Apr 2011

"What's A Goin' On?" People And Place In The Fiction Of Edythe Squier Draper, 1924-1941, Aubrey R. Streit Krug

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This essay is devoted to looking back into the life and fiction of Edythe Squier Draper, a twentieth-century writer in Oswego, Kansas. Many of Draper’s stories are set in southeastern Kansas. Through them, we gain a sense of how she attempted—and at times failed—to perceive, articulate, and adapt to her place on the Great Plains. Draper claimed the identity of a rural woman writer by writing herself into narratives of colonial, agricultural settlement, and she both complicated and perpetuated stereotypes of class and race in her fiction. By examining her and her characters’ perspective on their place in the Great …

A Strategy For A Successful Christian Sexual Education Ministry In The African American Church, Darryl Lee Jones Apr 2011

A Strategy For A Successful Christian Sexual Education Ministry In The African American Church, Darryl Lee Jones

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

A review of current literature demonstrates that very little material is available to assist churches on how to effectively communicate on the subject of sexuality in the African American church context. The purpose of this project is to illuminate the African American Church regarding the nature of this project on sexuality in the African American Church, its common elements, and an effective strategy for preparing a project. By applying a strong understanding of current and past literature reviews, surveys and questionnaires sent to homes and churches, in addition to interviews and workshops, the project reviews historical African American Church perspectives …

The overall mission of the church is to make disciples of all nations. Gospel Community Church is a church plant that is striving to make disciples in central VA and around the world. The purpose of this thesis is to develop an effective discipleship strategy for GCC. In order to develop this strategy, this thesis first considers the history and culture of central VA, the Biblical mandate and examples of discipleship in the Bible, snapshots of discipleship throughout church history, and current forms of discipleship in central VA churches.
