Effects Of Eu Accession On The Politics Of Privatization - The Steel Sector In Comparative Perspective, Aleksandra Sznajder Lee Jan 2006

Effects Of Eu Accession On The Politics Of Privatization - The Steel Sector In Comparative Perspective, Aleksandra Sznajder Lee

Political Science Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of the European Union (EU) accession process on the restructuring and privatization of the steel sector of the four largest steel producers in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), namely Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Slovakia. The outcome to date for these countries' steel mills has been relatively uniform in that they have been integrated into the global production networks of some of the largest multinational steel enterprises. The pressures which brought this outcome about, however, were far from uniform. The variability in the modes of convergence is highlighted by …

Removal of inclusions is of greatsignificance to steelmakers and the scientific principles underpinning inclusion removal has been the subject of numerous investigations in the past and during the last few decades, it has become increasingly obvious that inclusions can be utilized as an effective tool for the control of microstructure1 . Manganese sulfide precipitates are known to crystallize and precipitate preferentially in interdendritic regions during solidification, due to segregation of manganese and sulphur2 and these inclusions have traditionally been used for the dual purpose of improving the machinability and controlling of grain structure in steel. Small MnS particles restrain grain …

The Evaluation Of Tuyere Coke Probing Data At Bluescope Steel Port Kembla Works, Robert J. Nightingale, John Simpson, Brian J. Monaghan, Andrew Blakey, Vincent Daly Jan 2006

The Evaluation Of Tuyere Coke Probing Data At Bluescope Steel Port Kembla Works, Robert J. Nightingale, John Simpson, Brian J. Monaghan, Andrew Blakey, Vincent Daly

The level of sliding friction between the mating top centre and centre bowl liner components of a rail freight truck centre bearing provides both positive and negative effects on rail vehicle dynamics. Currently used centre bearing surfaces include AISI 1053 steel top centres mating against unlubricated and lubricated Hadfield steel, and polyethylene centre bowl liners. The wear life of the unlubricated AISI 1053 steel top centre against Hadfield steel is short, whilst the low friction of the lubricated and polyethylene surfaces can be detrimental to vehicle dynamics. It is proposed to use laser clad Stellite 6 as one of the …

Formation Of Ferrite Products During Continuous Cooling Of A Cu-Bearing Hsla Steel, S.S. Ghasemi Banadkouki, Druce P. Dunne Jan 2006

Formation Of Ferrite Products During Continuous Cooling Of A Cu-Bearing Hsla Steel, S.S. Ghasemi Banadkouki, Druce P. Dunne

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

A continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagram was constructed by a combination of diatometry and metallographic methods for a Cu-bearing HSLA steel, which is a low carbon low alloy variant of the ASTM A710 type structural steel.

Flexural Behaviour Of Hybrid Frp-Concrete-Steel Double Skin Tubular Members, T Yu, Y L. Wong, J G. Teng, S L. Dong, E S.S Lam Jan 2006

Flexural Behaviour Of Hybrid Frp-Concrete-Steel Double Skin Tubular Members, T Yu, Y L. Wong, J G. Teng, S L. Dong, E S.S Lam

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the flexural behavior of a new type of hybrid FRP-concrete-steel member as well as results from a corresponding theoretical model based on the plane section assumption and the fiber element approach. This new type of hybrid member is in the form of a double-skin tube, composed of a steel inner tube and an FRP outer tube with a concrete infill between the two tubes, and may be employed as columns or beams. The parameters examined in this study include the section configuration, the concrete strength, and the thicknesses of the …

Leaning Into The Steel Industry: Lean Supply And The Steel Industry, Matthew P. Pepper, Trevor A. Spedding Jan 2006

Leaning Into The Steel Industry: Lean Supply And The Steel Industry, Matthew P. Pepper, Trevor A. Spedding

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The steel industry contributes substantially to Australia’s economy. However, globalisation has forced steel producers and exporters to reassess their strategic direction and seek out different management approaches to maintain market share. This paper promotes the concept of lean supply and its effectiveness (when used in conjunction with other strategic tools), in responding to the challenges of globalisation and other changes in the operating market; by strengthening the industrial supply chain for competition. Future considerations for practitioners and researchers are identified in the concluding discussion.

Fatigue Of Older Bridges In Northern Indiana Due To Overweight And Oversized Loads, Volume 2: Analysis Methods And Fatigue Evaluation, Piya Chotickai, Mark D. Bowman Jan 2006

Fatigue Of Older Bridges In Northern Indiana Due To Overweight And Oversized Loads, Volume 2: Analysis Methods And Fatigue Evaluation, Piya Chotickai, Mark D. Bowman

JTRP Technical Reports

This report is the second of a two-volume final report presenting the findings of the research work that was undertaken to evaluate the fatigue behavior of steel highway bridges on the extra heavy weight corridor in Northwest Indiana. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the type and magnitude of the loads that travel along the corridor and then assess the effect of those loads on the fatigue strength of the steel bridges on the corridor. This volume presents the results of an evaluation of the fatigue strength of steel bridge structures along the extra heavy weight corridor. A …
