Limiting attrition (i.e., participant dropout before the conclusion of a study) is a major challenge faced by researchers when implementing clinical trials. Data from a smoking cessation trial for females (N = 246) were analyzed in order to identify baseline smoking-related, demographic and psychological characteristics affecting likelihood of early (i.e., before the quit attempt) and late (i.e., after the quit attempt) dropout. There were a number of significant demographic predictors of attrition. Participants with at least one child living at home were at increased risk of both early and late dropout. Non-Whites were at increased risk of early dropout, while …
The Quality Movement Discourse In The Higher Education Sector: A General Review, Aidan Kenny
The Quality Movement Discourse In The Higher Education Sector: A General Review, Aidan Kenny
Articles
This paper – the first of a series of three – describes some of the macro milestones in the evolution of the Quality Movement in the industrial environment. The emphasis then shifts to reviewing the discourse relating to quality in the higher education sector in the UK. Attention is given to Quality Assessment, Quality Assurance and Quality Enhancement models. The interface or tension lines between quality as a controlling mechanism or as a tool for development are outlined. Predominant concerns and issues as expressed by academics are clustered into macro questions, the answers to which will require further longitudinal research.

William “Bill” Anthony (1926-1989) was arguably one of the most influential bookbinders and conservators in the US. His impact cannot be measured by his work alone but also by his legacy as demonstrated by all those he trained, many of whom are now leaders in the field in their own right. Lawrence Yerkes’ forward and Helen Ryan’s introduction to the catalog describe not only Anthony’s life and work, but also the emotional bond they had with him and his spirit that touched so many.

Transparency In International Commercial Arbitration, Catherine A. Rogers
Transparency In International Commercial Arbitration, Catherine A. Rogers
Journal Articles
Scholars have long been making the case for expanding transparency in the international commercial arbitration system, but recently these proposals have taken on a greater sense of urgency and an apparent willingness to forcibly impose transparency reforms on unwilling parties. These new transparency advocates exhort the general public's stakehold in many issues being arbitrated, which they contend necessitates transparency reforms, including compulsory publication of international commercial arbitration awards.
In this symposium essay, I begin by developing a definition of transparency in the adjucatory setting, and conceptually distinguishing from other concepts, like "public access" and "disclosure," which are often improperly treated …
Review Of 'Handbook Of Face Recognition', Harold C. Hill
Review Of 'Handbook Of Face Recognition', Harold C. Hill
Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
The Handbook of Face Recognition is a collection of chapters designed as an introduction to the state-of-the-art in automatic face recognition. Recognition of identity is the primary focus, but face detection and expression categorisation are also covered in some detail. While this book is largely written by and aimed at engineers, the study of face recognition has always been a multidisciplinary exercise and this volume provides a valuable summary of one discipline's contribution.
Conveyor Trajectory Prediction Methods - A Review, David B. Hastie, Peter W. Wypych
Conveyor Trajectory Prediction Methods - A Review, David B. Hastie, Peter W. Wypych
Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)
The accurate design of conveyor transfers for the efficient transfer of product from one conveyor to another is of utmost importance and companies can not afford a hit and miss approach in their construction. Several key particle mechanisms occur within a transfer chute, discharge from a belt conveyor, trajectory, impact, free-fall and chute flow. This paper will focus on the prediction of product discharge and product trajectory from conveyor belts, which are the defining elements determining the flow through a conveyor transfer. There are several approaches available in the literature which will be reviewed taking into account issues such as …

Horseradish And Soybean Peroxidases: Comparable Tools For Alternative Niches?, Barry Ryan, CiaráN Fagan, Neil Carolan
Articles
Horseradish and soybean peroxidases (HRP and SBP, respectively) are useful biotechnological tools. HRP is often termed the classical plant heme peroxidase, and although it has been studied for decades our understanding has deepened since its cloning and subsequent expression, which has enabled numerous mutational and protein engineering studies. SBP, however, has been neglected until recently; despite offering a real alternative to HRP that actually outperforms it in terms of stability. SBP is now used in numerous biotechnological applications, including biosensors. Review of both is timely. This article summarises and discusses the main insights into the structure and mechanism of HRP, …

The Fathead Minnow In Aquatic Toxicology: Past, Present And Future, Gerald T. Ankley, Daniel L. Villeneuve
The Fathead Minnow In Aquatic Toxicology: Past, Present And Future, Gerald T. Ankley, Daniel L. Villeneuve
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
This paper reviews the roles of the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) as a small fish model in the field of aquatic toxicology. The species has been (and is) extensively used both for regulatory testing and research, especially in North America. For example, tests with the fathead minnow, ranging from 48-h lethality through partial and full life-cycle assays, are routinely used for regulatory programs aimed at assessing potential risks of new chemicals such as high-production volume materials and pesticides, as well as impacts of complex mixtures like effluents. The species also has been used for a wide variety of …

Antidepressants And Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Systematic Review, Antonina A. Mikocka-Walus, Deborah Turnbull, Nicole T. Moulding, Ian G. Wilson, Jane M. Andrews, Gerald J. Holtmann
Graduate School of Medicine - Papers (Archive)
Background: A number of studies have suggested a link between the patient's psyche and the course of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Although pharmacotherapy with antidepressants has not been widely explored, some investigators have proposed that treating psychological comorbidities with antidepressants may help to control disease activity. To date a systematic analysis of the available studies assessing the efficacy of antidepressants for the control of somatic symptoms in IBD patients has not been performed. Methods: We searched electronic databases, without any language restriction. All relevant papers issued after 1990 were examined. Results: 12 relevant publications were identified. All of them referred …

Book Review - Theresa Coletti: Mary Magdalene And The Drama Of Saints: Theater, Gender, And Religion In Late Medieval England, Louise D'Arcens
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
Theresa Coletti’s Mary Magdalene and the Drama of Saints is a persuasively argued and rigorously researched study that examines the late medieval English career of medieval Christianity’s “other Mary.” Coletti argues for the significance of the figure of Mary Magdalene within traditions of medieval insular piety dating back to Bede, and more specifically within vernacular East Anglian culture of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Taking as her main focus the early sixteenthcentury Digby saint play Mary Magdalene, Coletti succeeds in demonstrating the many striking ways in which “late medieval East Anglia’s feminine religious culture and commitment to sacred drama …
The Tax Offset For Entrepreneurs: A Critical Review Of The 25% Tax Offset Concession For Small Business, John Mclaren
The Tax Offset For Entrepreneurs: A Critical Review Of The 25% Tax Offset Concession For Small Business, John Mclaren
Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)
From 1 July 2005, small business taxpayers using the Simplified Tax System and with a turnover of $50,000 or less are allowed a tax offset of 25 per cent on their tax payable. If turnover exceeds $50,000, the tax offset phases out at 1 per cent until the turnover reaches $75,000. This tax concession was part of the government's election statement made on 26 September 2004 in which the government stated that it wanted to assist and encourage small business entrepreneurs, particularly those set up from home. The steps involved in calculating the amount of tax offset that can be …

Towards An Organizational Model Of Occupational Health And Safety Management: A Review Of The Literature, Michael Zanko, Scott Burrows
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
The enormous, tragic and largely unnoticed problem of workplace injuries and deaths continues to beset countries around the globe. Tripartite regulatory approaches to address the issues involved often place primary responsibility on employers’ management of health and safety (OHS) at the workplace. This paper seeks to ascertain how OHS management at the organizational level has been treated in the research literature.
A review of thirteen leading management journals from 1994 to 2005 was conspicuous by the absence of interest in OHS management as the subject or field of study. An examination of six leading HRM journals over the same timeframe …
