Testing And Evaluation Of Light Gauge Steel Frame / 9.5 Mm Csp Wood Panel Shear Walls, David Rokas Nov 2006

Testing And Evaluation Of Light Gauge Steel Frame / 9.5 Mm Csp Wood Panel Shear Walls, David Rokas

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

The use of light gauge steel framing elements sheathed with wood plywood or oriented strand board are becoming more common in the construction of structural shear walls for low-rise platform frame structural systems in Canada. Canadian standards and codes do not currently outline design methods for this type of wall system. Therefore, research at McGill University is underway to help develop design parameters for seismic and wind loading that can be used in conjunction with the 2005 National Building Code of Canada for this type of shear wall system. The research is based on the monotonic and reversed cyclic testing …

Corrosion Of Galvanized Fasteners Used In Cold-Formed Steel Framing, Roger A. Laboube Oct 2006

Corrosion Of Galvanized Fasteners Used In Cold-Formed Steel Framing, Roger A. Laboube

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)

The primary objective of this project was to study the effect of corrosion on the structural integrity of galvanized fasteners used in cold-formed steel-framed construction. A number of specific tasks were developed to meet this objective, including a literature search, design and construction of field enclosures, determination of test sites and installation of field enclosures, test specimen design and fabrication, accelerated corrosion testing, structural tensile testing, data analysis and technology transfer.

Investigation Of Cause Of Cracked Stringer On The Blanchette Bridge, Ward Marianos Jr., Genda Chen, Nestore Galati, Fabio Matta Oct 2006

Investigation Of Cause Of Cracked Stringer On The Blanchette Bridge, Ward Marianos Jr., Genda Chen, Nestore Galati, Fabio Matta

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Blanchette Bridge carries Interstate 70 across the Missouri River, connecting St. Louis and St. Charles counties in eastern Missouri. The westbound bridge was constructed in 1958. In 1979, the original reinforced concrete roadway deck on the bridge was replaced with a steel grid deck system, welded to supporting girders and stringers. In 1999 and 2005, cracks were discovered in stringers on the bridge approach spans. The stringers were repaired with bolted splices.

The investigation of the cracking included preliminary analyses, review of historical documents, detailed finite element analyses, and field testing of the bridge. The cracking was determined to …

Seismic Retrofit Of Ciss Pile Bent Cap Connections, Michael C. Lubiewski, Pedro Franco Silva, Genda Chen Oct 2006

Seismic Retrofit Of Ciss Pile Bent Cap Connections, Michael C. Lubiewski, Pedro Franco Silva, Genda Chen

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Three 4/5-scale units were cast, retrofitted, and tested under simulated seismic loads. These units were built to model a bridge bent consisting of a cast in place steel shell (CISS) column foundation shaft and a bent cap configured to form a tee connection. Each unit was retrofitted in the column, bent cap, and their connection according to current seismic design standards. The main objective was to ensuring ductile performance under lateral loads.

Specific seismic improvements made to the column and the bent cap system were: (1) the moment capacity of the column was reduced by cutting a portion of the …

Comparison Of Aisi Specification Methods For Members With Single Intermediate Longitudinal Stiffeners, B. W. Schafer, Heejae Yang Jul 2006

Comparison Of Aisi Specification Methods For Members With Single Intermediate Longitudinal Stiffeners, B. W. Schafer, Heejae Yang

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)

In the current AISI specification, there are two different methods for calculating the effective widths of longitudinally stiffened elements. The first method “B4.1” applies solely to the element with only one intermediate stiffener, whereas the second method “B5.1” works only for those elements with more than one intermediate stiffener. Both methods are accurate in finding the design moments if used appropriately. Although two methods are developed to handle different cases, for some sections with one intermediate stiffener, the second method also works accurately, giving the same result as the first method does for calculating design moments. For some other sections …

Direct Strength Method (Dsm) Design Guide, American Iron And Steel Institute Jun 2006

Direct Strength Method (Dsm) Design Guide, American Iron And Steel Institute

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)

The following Design Guide has been developed under the direction of the American Iron and Steel Institute Committee on Specifications for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members. The development of the Guide was sponsored by the American Iron and Steel Institute. The AISI Committee on Specifications wishes to acknowledge and expresses gratitude to Dr. Benjamin Schafer of Johns Hopkins University who was the author of this Guide.

With anticipated improvements in understanding of the behavior of cold-formed steel and the continuing development of new technology, this material might become dated. It is possible that AISI will attempt to produce …
