Teaching Fractions, Natalie Miles

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Because fractions are a vital part of mathematics instruction in schools and can be found in real life, it is important that all students understand and be able to utilize them. Teachers should choose strategies that will work best for their individual students, taking into account the various ways their students learn and the fraction knowledge students already possess. To effectively teach fractions, teachers must find ways to prompt student interest. Teachers can accomplish this through the use of technology. games. and manipulatives. Teaching Content On Social Work Practice With Religious Congregations: A Curriculum Module, Michael E. Sherr, Terry Wolfer

Social Work Faculty Publications

This pilot study represents an effort to implement and evaluate use of a curriculum module on Charitable Choice and social work practice in a faith-based organization. Using a nonequivalent control group design, repeated measures MANOVA showed significant differences between the treatment (n=54) and comparison groups (n=53) on knowledge and degree of comfort at posttest. Despite the use of a small sample (n=107) of MSW students at a public university in the Southeast, the findings provide initial support for further use and future evaluations of curriculum modules covering specific content on practice in faith-based settings.

“New Learning Spaces”: An Eye Towards Our New Campus, Aziza Ellozy Dr. Nov 2004

“New Learning Spaces”: An Eye Towards Our New Campus, Aziza Ellozy Dr.

Faculty Journal Articles

Many universities in the US and elsewhere have designed or are in the process of designing new “learning spaces” to support new types of teaching and learning on their campuses. The shift in the design of these learning spaces is driven by changes in pedagogy and technology. AUC, with the building of our new campus, has had the unique opportunity of starting from scratch, and of taking advantage of the experience of others. It is also faced with the challenge of getting it right for at least the next ten years.

Integration Through Narrative, Michael E. Cafferky Nov 2004

Integration Through Narrative, Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Works

The purpose of this paper is to test the proposition that narrative contains an inherent power for integration of faith, life, and learning of business principles. This is done by a process of reviewing assertions from selected disciplines with the revealed will of God in Scripture. To accomplish this, the paper explores narrative in the context of cultural anthropology, education, business, and religion. From these fields, several parallels can be seen, and several values of narrative for the university business school classroom emerge. The concluding thoughts suggest how instructors can use stories for faith, life, and learning integration.

Active Learning (4): Is Cooperative/Collaborative Learning A Self-Less Pursuit?, Pandeli M. Glavanis Dr.

Faculty Journal Articles

The immediate answer to the question is a very definite and emphatic NO. In fact the rest of this short essay will argue that as all forms of social cooperation are based on some type of self-interest thus, cooperative/collaborative learning is also anything but altruistic. Nevertheless, I will also argue that it is precisely because self-interest is embedded in all forms of cooperative/collaborative learning that it enables this style of learning to lead to an interactive and constructivist approach to learning, i.e. active learning. The logic of the argument once again derives from established social theory and in particular the …
