Interpretation And Orientalism: Outing Japan's Sexual Minorities To The English-Speaking World, Mark J. Mclelland
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
The growing visibility of Japanese gay men and lesbians who articulate their identities in a manner similar to activists in the west has been heightened by two recent English books Queer Japan and Coming Out in Japan. While acknowledging the need to listen to a plurality of voices from Japan, this essay critiques the manner in which the coming-out narratives in these books have been framed by their western translators and editors. In the introductions to both books, Japan is (once again) pictured as a feudal and repressive society. In their efforts to let the homosexual subaltern speak, the translators …

Architecture Senior Theses
"Japanese contemporary urban houses have list their traditional relationships to nature, to seasons, and to natural landscapes. And the urban landscape with respect to architecture in Tokyo is chaos. This situation is due to the rapid economic growth they followed in the process of modernization after WWII. In this project, I would like to propose a housing which reconnects people to their traditional cultural roots through intensifying sensorial experience within contemporary urbanity."

Diversification Benefit Of Japanese Real Estate Over The Last Four Decades, Neal Maroney, Atsuyuki Naka
Diversification Benefit Of Japanese Real Estate Over The Last Four Decades, Neal Maroney, Atsuyuki Naka
Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006
This paper examines the benefits of diversifying into real estate and other assets that typify the wealth held by Japanese investors by examining movements in mean variance frontiers. We employ spanning tests to assess statistical significance of frontier shifts without specifying a benchmark asset pricing model. We also examine the impact of shifts in mean variance frontiers before and after the precipitous decline in Japanese real estate and stock market values in the 90s. Spanning tests show that real estate, short, and long-term bonds provide diversification benefits while domestic and US equities do not. Significant shifts in mean variance frontiers …

Japan is about to change its system of legal education. In April 2004 Japan will introduce law schools. Law schools are to occupy an intermediary place between the present undergraduate faculties of law and the national Legal Training and Research Institute. The law faculties are to continue to offer general undergraduate education in law, while the law schools in combination with the national Institute are to provide professional legal education. A principal goal of the change is to produce more lawyers. Law schools are charged with providing "practical education especially for fostering legal professionals." But just what is professional legal …

Analyses of rocks from the Active Fault Survey Tunnel (AFST) provides insight into the structure and hydrogeology of the northeast-trending Mozumi-Sukenobu fault, an active strike-slip fault with 125 to 500 m of right-lateral slip in central Japan. Interlayered regions of sub-vertical permeability zones formed by cataclasis and slip on clay-rich foliated zones. Core samples range from 10−19 m2 to almost 10−13 m2. CFC analyses of waters from the fault zone show that water entering the tunnel is 27–36 years old, yielding a bulk fault permeability of 10−14 to 10−15 m2. The …

Generation Xers in Japan continue to draw increasing attention not only because they constitute a promising segment for many products and services but also because they are expected to play a critical role in shaping their country’s political and economic relations with other countries. This paper examines their attitudes toward US products, businesses, and government. It also examines their behavioral intentions and their expectations of their government in terms of managing American business involvement in Japan. Findings and implications are presented.

Further Thoughts On The Role Of Regulatory Purpose Under Article Iii Of The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade: A Tribute To Bob Hudec, Donald H. Regan

My topic in this article is the role of regulatory purpose under Article III of the GATT, and I regard Bob [Hudec] as the patron saint of efforts to establish the relevance of purpose. His famous "Requiem for an 'Aims and Effects' Test" may have been called a requiem, but it was reluctant and sceptical. Bob thought dispute settlement tribunals ought to consider the regulator's purpose, and he thought they would do so, whatever they said. As decisions on Article III accumulate, we are in the process of learning that he was right on both counts.
