Aristotle On Existential Import And Nonreferring Subjects, Scott Carson
Aristotle On Existential Import And Nonreferring Subjects, Scott Carson
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
Much contemporary philosophy o f language has shown considerable interest in the relation between our linguistic practice and our metaphysical commitments, and this interest has begun to influence work in the history of philosophy as well. In his Categories and De interpretatione, Aristotle presents an analysis of language that can be read as intended to illustrate an isomorphism between the ontology of the real world and how we talk about that world. Our understanding of language is at least in part dependent upon our understanding of the relationships that exist among the enduring πράγματα that we come across in our …

Here Comes Tomorrow--And It's Full Of Challenges, David R. Chesnutt
Here Comes Tomorrow--And It's Full Of Challenges, David R. Chesnutt
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)
Documentary editors have put technology to good use in the last twenty years. Technology has helped us:
• gain better intellectual control over our documents
• produce more accurate and reliable texts
• find information that enhances our annotation • provide better intellectual access through our indexes
In spite of the wide array of software available, most projects have never gone beyond word-processing and spreadsheet programs. Here and there the landscape is dotted with a database program or two. And a few hardy souls even took on the mainframe and used it to create indexes and bibliographies, to compare texts, …

Cognitive Development Beyond Childhood, David Moshman
Cognitive Development Beyond Childhood, David Moshman
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Concluding this volume on children’s cognition, this chapter addresses developmental changes in cognition that extend beyond childhood. I will not trace cognitive change across the entire span of adulthood (for lifespan accounts, see Cerella, Rybash, Hoyer, & Commons, 1993; Commons, Richards, & Armon, 1984; Craik & Salthouse, 1993; Holliday & Chandler, 1986; Hoyer & Rybash, 1994; Kausler, 1994; Lachman & Burack, 1993; Miller & Cook-Greuter, 1994; Rybash, Hoyer, & Roodin, 1986; Sinnott & Cavanaugh, 1991). Rather, I highlight changes associated with the second (and to a lesser extent the third) decade of life. The research reviewed suggests that developmental changes …

Class Identity And The International Division Of Labor: Sri Lanka's Migrant Housemaids, Michele Ruth Gamburd
Class Identity And The International Division Of Labor: Sri Lanka's Migrant Housemaids, Michele Ruth Gamburd
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
In 1996, 408,000 Sri Lankan women, nearly 10% of the country’s working-age women, worked abroad, many of them in the oil producing countries of the Persian Gulf. In this paper I compare the influence of international migration on local hierarchies of class and gender in two villages in southern Sri Lanka: a Sinhala-speaking Buddhist village where I did my doctoral dissertation research in 1992-4, and a Tamil-speaking Muslim village where I spent some time during the summer of 1997. I discuss the challenges of using ‘class’ as a unit of analysis in a non-Western setting where gender identities, family ties, …

Waiting With Brother Thomas, Chris Sagers
Waiting With Brother Thomas, Chris Sagers
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
In this Essay, Christopher Sagers argues that those schools of thought that could be called "doubtful"—that is, those predicated on suspicion of belief to some degree—share a range of similarities and, more importantly, are attacked through a set of common criticisms. He argues that the fundamental criticism of these "doubtful" schools of thought—that doubt leads us to nihilism and therefore must be bad—is a non sequitur. Furthermore, he continues, we reject doubt not because it is bad, but because it is difficult. Ultimately, he suggests ways to face the problems of nihilism or, rather, ways of understanding them as other …
What Can Humor And Advertising Teach Us About Legal Drafting?, Dallin D. Oaks, Jeremy Lewis
What Can Humor And Advertising Teach Us About Legal Drafting?, Dallin D. Oaks, Jeremy Lewis
Faculty Publications
In his book Legal Drafting in a Nutshell, Haggard includes a useful chapter of nearly 50 pages in which he lists various lexical and structural elements and explains how these can lead to ambiguous writing. The kind of inventory approach that he presents is helpful and reveals that ambiguity doesn't just happen but often results from the careless use of identifiable structures or particular words.

Scenes From The Contemporary Barcelona Stage: La Fura Dels Baus's Aspiration To The Authentic, Sharon G. Feldman
Scenes From The Contemporary Barcelona Stage: La Fura Dels Baus's Aspiration To The Authentic, Sharon G. Feldman
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
In October 1983, just south of Barcelona at the annual Sitges Theatre Festival, beneath the railroad tracks in the claustrophobic space of a subterranean pedestrian passageway, La Fura dels Baus erupted into public view with an embryonic version of their first major spectacle, entitled Accions ("Actions"). The performance was conceived along the same aesthetic lines that continue to shape even the most recent work of this Catalan company. Accions consisted of a series of transgressive and, at times, startling exercicis pràctics ("practical exercises") intended to elicit an impulsive, visceral response from audience members. In their program notes, La Fura defined …

Use Of Child Safety Seats Among Mexican Parents In A Small South Dade Community, Maria Beltran
Use Of Child Safety Seats Among Mexican Parents In A Small South Dade Community, Maria Beltran
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the use and misuse of child safety seats among Mexican parents. Data were collected via personal interview and by use of the SAFE KIDS BUCKLE UP Child Safety Seat Checklist Form. This study used a descriptive comparative design. The convenience sample consisted of 63 Mexican mothers with at least one child under the age of four (index child). The findings showed that Mexican parents tend to misuse or not use child safety seats. Most parents were not aware of the misuse, and receiving prior information on the use of child safety seats …

Content-Area Teachers' Perceptions Of The Effect Of The Meta Training On Their Instructional Practices, Sylvia R. Crespo
Content-Area Teachers' Perceptions Of The Effect Of The Meta Training On Their Instructional Practices, Sylvia R. Crespo
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the content-area teachers' perceptions of the effect that compliance with the teacher training for content-area teachers of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students mandated by the Consent Decree had on their instructional practices within the content-area classroom. In order to provide an overview of the factors which had an effect on the content-area teachers' mandated training, various areas were reviewed: history of legislative actions that led up to the Consent Decree; stipulations set forth in the Consent Decree; Miami-Dade County Public Schools District LEP Plan including stipulations for teacher training; research on teacher …
