Subtitling On The Intersection Of Theory And Practicepedagogical Research-Based.Pdf, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat

Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh MAT

The present article investigates our proposed approach for subtitler training namely a Pedagogical Research-Based (PRB), defined as a professionally-oriented approach utilised in Audiovisual Translation (AVT) translator training to theoretically and practically strengthen the subtitling skills of trainees. The data of the present study is derived from an Egyptian television hard-edged drama entitled Firqit Naji Atallah (lit. Naji Atallah Team), Episode 1 (2012), subtitled by a sample of twenty MA translation students, ten of whom enrolled in the second semester for the academic year 2013/2014 and the rest (also totalling ten) did the same, a year later, namely for the school …

Addressing Coherence In English-Arabic Subtitling By Amateur Aficionados, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat, Sulafa Musallam

Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh MAT

The present article discusses coherence in terms of linguistic, culture and polysemiotic channels. Subtitlers are often faced with major stumbling blocks to get the message across in a cohesive and coherent fashion in the light of various semiotic modalities, underpinning the construction of meaning. The data of the present study comprises of a famous American sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel Air first aired in 1990, subtitled by two amateur subtitling aficionados and one MA translation student (who will be referred to as student subtitler) enrolled on Audiovisual Translation course at Al-Quds University for the school year 2014/2015. The article …

The Civilised Self And The Barbaric Other: Imperial Delusions Of Order And The Challenges Of Human Security, Ikechi Mgbeoji Oct 2015

The Civilised Self And The Barbaric Other: Imperial Delusions Of Order And The Challenges Of Human Security, Ikechi Mgbeoji

Ikechi Mgbeoji

In the aftermath of the military conflicts of 1936 - 45, there seemed to be a global renunciation of war as an instrument of state policy. Shortly thereafter, however, decades of ideological attrition between the major powers and the inherent perversion of postcolonial states reduced the solemn declarations of 1945 to ineffectual rhetoric. Underpinning the decline and demise of a human-centred approach to global peace and security is the enduring notion of the civilised self and the barbaric other. The polarisation of humanity between camps of the savage and the civilised has continued to animate international policy making despite denials. …

Why Daghestan Is Good To Think: Moshe Gammer, Daghestan, And Global Islamic History”, Rebecca Ruth Gould Jan 2015

Why Daghestan Is Good To Think: Moshe Gammer, Daghestan, And Global Islamic History”, Rebecca Ruth Gould

Rebecca Gould

During the final decade of his productive life, Moshe Gammer (1950-2013) edited the first major English-language series on Daghestani philology. This chapter examines key aspects of Gammer’s legacy, while offering an overview of Daghestani philology from the colonial period to the present, and outlining how this field of inquiry enables us to revise regnant paradigms concerning language, law, and the circulation of culture within contemporary Islamic Studies. I concentrate on the potential of Daghestan’s Islamic archives to contribute to the study of linguistic and legal modernity, transregional Arabic in its interface with the vernacular, and the multiplicity of Islamic modernities. …

Translation And Arabicisation Within Tertiary Education Courses: ‘Social Workʼ As A Case Study, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat, Khalid Hreish Kh Dec 2014

Translation And Arabicisation Within Tertiary Education Courses: ‘Social Workʼ As A Case Study, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat, Khalid Hreish Kh

Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh MAT

Throughout history, the Arabic language has been buffeted by social and political upheavals, giving rise to the eclipse of the language. Nevertheless, the language has always enjoyed a decent revival for the sacrosanct and sublime status it has been accorded. The paper explores Arabicisation as one of the oldest and most frequent institutionalised methods to render foreign literatures and sciences into the Arabic language, with a view to giving renewed impetus to the language per se, encountering today’s colonisation and bridging the cultural gap between Arab culture and other cultures. The nomenclature of many terminologies introduced to Arab culture is …

Black And White Memories: Re-Inscription Of Visual Orientalism In Embroideries, Esmaeil Zeiny Aug 2014

Black And White Memories: Re-Inscription Of Visual Orientalism In Embroideries, Esmaeil Zeiny

Esmaeil Zeiny

In the aftermath of the tragedies of 9/11, the West began to represent the East in a darker way. The western mass media, and the art and literary markets are riddled with visual discourses that consolidate the stereotypical representation of the Orient. One of these visual discourses which strengthen the stereotypes is the portrayals of Eastern women. Almost without exception, the whole mass media use images of eastern veiled women either as victim or lecherous to bolster its East/West demarcation. These sorts of images can be found in some contemporary Muslim women’s works as well. By examining the history of …

The Lebanon-Israel War Of 2006: Global Effects And Its Aftermath, Emmanuel Kotia, Fiifi Edu-Afful

Emmanuel Wekem Kotia

This article examines the demands for global liability for the killings and extensive destruction committed by Israel and Hezbollah in the 2006 war. It explains why, despite strong condemnation globally for the disproportionate force used in that unconventional war, the concrete steps specified by the United Nations Resolution 1701 have failed to address the primary challenges that necessitated the war. Based on the authors experience on the field as peacekeepers, this article adds another dimension to the already exiting narratives on the second Lebanese war by emphasizing the perverse consequence of an irregular warfare between a legitimate state and an …

“The Translatability Of Interjections: A Case Study Of Arabic-English Subtitling”, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat Dec 2010

“The Translatability Of Interjections: A Case Study Of Arabic-English Subtitling”, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat

Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh MAT

This paper examines the translatability of Arabic interjections into English subtitling, illustrated with a subtitled Egyptian film, State Security subtitled by Arab Radio and Television (ART). Theoretical framework regarding both Audiovisual Translation (AVT) and interjections is first discussed. The significance of interjections is approached from the perspective of technical and translation paradigms. The study shows that although technical issues limit the subtitler’s choices, they have very little to do with translating interjections because they are typically short words. With regard to translation, the study shows that the subtitler may opt for three major translation strategies: 1) an avoidance of source …
