Reaping The Benefits Of Mentors And Trusted Advisors, Carol A. Watson, Kristina L. Hiedringhaus, Caroline Osborne
Caroline L. Osborne
This program delved into the benefits you can gain from cultivating a network of mentors and trusted advisors. Participants learned how to find their own mentor or advisor, how to build that relationship, why more than one mentor or advisor may be helpful, and why you are never too old (or experienced) to need a mentor. Participants had a hands-on opportunity to create their own mentorship plan by defining what they need from a mentor, how to find someone who can fulfill those needs, and how to begin developing that relationship.

Sharing data is now encouraged by major funding agencies, and many journals require it as a prerequisite for publication. While many of the hard science journals have implemented ‘Data Deposit Requirements’ and ‘Policies’, in the Library Science literature, publishers are beginning to move titles into open access journals, but data deposit requirements are just beginning to be addressed. Librarian authors will increasingly find themselves having to comply with data sharing policies. In this webinar, we look at examples from the Journal of the Medical Library Association and the Journal of eScience Librarianship and discuss best practices in data deposit.

Graphic Medicine: Comics As A Self-Care Tool For Undergraduate Students, Brenda Fay
Graphic Medicine: Comics As A Self-Care Tool For Undergraduate Students, Brenda Fay
Brenda Fay
Background: Graphic medicine is a branch of medical humanities that has begun to pop up in medical school curriculums. It is both as a tool to understand patients and families better and to express oneself as a clinician. It has not been well-studied in the undergraduate population. A health science librarian proposed and taught a seminar to investigate: Does exposure to graphic medicine increase empathy among undergraduate students; does graphic medicine increase interest in health care careers?
Methods: Graphic Medicine: Illness, Disease, and Health in Comics, was a 12-week, 75-minute, one-credit seminar, taught at Marquette University in Fall 2017. Class …

Superheros, villains, and fantastical characters are all well represented in comics. But what about the rest of us regular folks, where do we show up? One of the "human" areas of comics and graphic novels is the growing genre of graphic medicine.

Student perceptions of teachers can influence the success of instruction, and library instruction is no exception. Understanding the mindset of students can help academic librarians prepare for in-person and asynchronous classes and create instructional materials. By anticipating students’ impressions, librarians can challenge false assumptions and improve interactions. This poster highlights findings from a large study of how undergraduate students at one institution perceive academic librarians.

Survey Of Library Services At Engineering News Record’S Top 500 Design Firms: Implications For Engineering Education, John B. Napp
John Napp
This paper reports on the findings of a national survey of the library services available at Engineering News Record’s Top 500 Designs Firms. In mid-October 2002 a survey was mailed to all 500 firms. The survey was in two parts. One part was to be completed by a principal in the firm. The second part was to be completed by the degreed librarian (holding a Masters in Library Science or its equivalent) if the firm employed one. The return rate was 21.8% (n=109). The findings indicated that 74.4% of responding design firms do not employ a degreed librarian. In …

Virtual participation in professional organization and other committee meetings outside of one’s home institution continues to increase as time and money for travel to these events decreases. As the profession moves into a model of increased virtual communication, questions arise as to the best platform and tools to be used for the most effective method of communication. This study seeks to determine which platforms are currently being used, which platforms are preferred by organizers and participants and which platforms will best serve the needs of the committee. Results of this study on preferences for virtual platforms can help individuals and …

The Aurora Health Care Libraries wanted to reach out to patients in a new way. Inspiration regarding hospital librarians visiting patients on the floors was taken from a Planetree Librarian and from an article written by librarians at the Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. In the first six months of implementation at Aurora Health Care, November 2004 through April 2005, Patient Information Rounds were well received at the Aurora hospitals in which it was proposed. The Rounds remind patients, family members, and nursing floor staff that librarians are available and experienced at finding reliable, appropriate, and hard-to locate information to …

How can an "old space" like Special Collections be repurposed to meet evolving information literacy learning goals? This presentation will address ways in which a traditional library space can be reimagined as a place to engage students in affective learning at the beginning of the research process. By crafting activities for students that emphasize exploration and open-ended discovery, librarians and faculty can help students slow down and approach research more creatively. In the session, we (two librarians and a teaching faculty member) will share specific outcomes, activities, and the results of our assessments. Participants will: Understand the importance of affective …

Our panel brings together public, school, academic, and special librarians to discuss affordable resources and strategies for collecting a range of materials (movies, magazines, print books, electronic resources) and promoting those collections. Attendees will learn about how librarians can work together and support one another in this endeavor across institution types, including middle school students using a special library for History Day projects and undergraduates using public and special libraries for their research. Finally, we will emphasize the relationship between collections and service. While always part of core library functions, promotion and outreach take on a particularly important dimension for …

Cats As Detectives In Library Mysteries, Mary Freier
Cats As Detectives In Library Mysteries, Mary Freier
Mollie Freier
Cats have become ubiquitous as detectives or detective assistants in twenty-first century mysteries, although the trend began with the “The Cat Who” books, the first of which was published in the nineteen-sixties. Cats have a fine history in the detective genre, but current depictions of cats as detectives include the cats conversing with other animals and even the human detective in the novel. Some of these cats possess supernatural abilities, and even those who don't possess impressive intelligence. Cats are notorious, of course, for being curious, and the librarians who function as amateur sleuths are similar in this regard. Some …
Making Performance-Based Evaluation Work For You: A Recipe For Personal Learning, Audrey Church
Making Performance-Based Evaluation Work For You: A Recipe For Personal Learning, Audrey Church
Audrey P. Church
Teacher observation and teacher evaluation are a given in American schools, and Charlotte Danielson's work in teacher effectiveness and professional practice has guided evaluation efforts for many years. There is a new, big kid in town, however. As Race to the Top requires documentation of student growth, and research shows that teacher effectiveness is a key factor in student learning, people see full implementation of performance-based teacher-evaluation systems in states and school districts across the nation. The goal of performance-based teacher evaluation is actually two-fold: first, to document teacher effectiveness and, second, to guide professional growth. Educators must not lose …

The main purpose of the study was to determine the status of information and communication technology (ICT) in academic libraries in polytechnics in Ghana. The study utilized an e-mail survey of ten (10) polytechnic librarians with the use of structured questionnaires of open and close ended questions. The respondents were purposively selected. The findings were analyzed using SPSS software and presented by use of descriptive statistics. The study found that majority of the respondents does not have adequate ICT facilities in the polytechnic libraries, and therefore cannot support modern academic library services. The findings indicate that ICT-based services that enhance …
