Dynamics Of Rural Labour Markets: Evidence From Longitudinal Panel Data In India, A Amarender Reddy Dec 2013

Dynamics Of Rural Labour Markets: Evidence From Longitudinal Panel Data In India, A Amarender Reddy

A Amarender Reddy

Given the slow structural transformation of employment in rural areas in India, this paper tries to probe into the structural transformation in semi-arid tropics of India, by using high frequency longitudinal panel data from 1975 to 2010. The results show that, up to early 1980s, structural transformation was very slow and most of the workers dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods. Most of the workers are spent more days in self-employment in agriculture with very few days in paid work. Both men and women have more leisure time during the 1970s compared to early 2000s. However, from 2001 onwards, there …

Out Of 'Control': The Operation Gold Exception And The Ncaa’S Susceptibility To Lawsuit Under Title Vi, Rob C. Burns

Rob C Burns

This Note looks at the bylaws of the NCAA and argues that certain bylaws concerning athletes competing in the Olympic Games, which permit American athletes to receive medal bonuses that their foreign counterparts cannot, are discriminatory on the basis of national origin in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.

Community, Home, And School Partnerships: A Critical Issue In Bilingual Education, Claudia Peralta Dec 2013

Community, Home, And School Partnerships: A Critical Issue In Bilingual Education, Claudia Peralta

Claudia Peralta

How can we help educators realize the wealth and relevancy that culturally and linguistically diverse families and students bring into the schools? Preparing teachers to effectively teach across socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, and gender differences is complicated by a lack of familiarity with or valuing of the cultures, learning styles, and communication patterns of diverse groups (Bohn & Sleeter, 2000). Today, however, 84% of teachers are white (Feistritzer, 2011), despite serving 74 million children in the United States (defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as those under 18 years of age), of which 59% are White; 19% Hispanic, 15%; Black, 4%; …

Enabelers And Inhibitors Of Healthcare Information Technology Adoption: Toward A Dual-Factor Model, Anol Bhattacherjee, Neset Hikmet Dec 2013

Enabelers And Inhibitors Of Healthcare Information Technology Adoption: Toward A Dual-Factor Model, Anol Bhattacherjee, Neset Hikmet

Neset Hikmet

This paper formulates, operationalizes, and empirically validates a dual-factor model of healthcare information technology (HIT) adoption, by taking into account both the enabling factors driving HIT adoption and the inhibiting factors constraining such adoption. Perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use were examined as enablers and perceived loss of control as an inhibitor. Using survey data on adoption of a new computerized patient order entry system among physicians at a community hospital, we demonstrate that inhibitors not only have a negative effect on one’s intention to adopt HIT systems, counteracting the positive effect of enablers, but also negatively bias some …

Analysis Of Technical ʻFoul-Upsʼ: With Particular Reference To Arabic-English Subtitling, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat Dec 2013

Analysis Of Technical ʻFoul-Upsʼ: With Particular Reference To Arabic-English Subtitling, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat

Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh MAT

A cost-effective solution in intercultural communication has been subtitling from English into Arabic for the past few decades. Subtitling stands as one of the most and oldest translation practices in the Arab World. However, the practice is done with blithe disregard for the technical dimension (e.g. space, segmentation, colour, synch etc) and polysemiotic channels (e.g. dialogue, music, picture etc). Results show ʻtwo-bitʼ technical aspect of subtitling; thus the strategies employed by film subtitle translators are questionable. Therefore, the paper argues that subtitling/translation strategies should be sought within the ambit of technical dimension of subtitling.

The New Privacy, Paul M. Schwartz, William Michael Treanor Dec 2013

The New Privacy, Paul M. Schwartz, William Michael Treanor

Paul M. Schwartz

This article reviews Overseers of the Poor: Surveillance, Resistance and the Limits of Privacy John Gilliom (2001). In 1964, as the welfare state emerged in full force in the United States, Charles Reich published The New Property, one of the most influential articles ever to appear in a law review. Reich argued that in order to protect individual autonomy in an "age of governmental largess," a new property right in governmental benefits had to be recognized. He called this form of property the "new property." In retrospect, Reich, rather than anticipating trends, was swimming against the tide of history. In …

Criminalizing Revenge Porn, Danielle Keats Citron, Mary Anne Franks Dec 2013

Criminalizing Revenge Porn, Danielle Keats Citron, Mary Anne Franks

Danielle Keats Citron

Violations of sexual privacy, notably the non-consensual publication of sexually graphic images in violation of someone's trust, deserve criminal punishment. They deny subjects' ability to decide if and when they are sexually exposed to the public and undermine trust needed for intimate relationships. Then too they produce grave emotional and dignitary harms, exact steep financial costs, and increase the risks of physical assault. A narrowly and carefully crafted criminal statute can comport with the First Amendment. The criminalization of revenge porn is necessary to protect against devastating privacy invasions that chill self-expression and ruin lives.

Social Support And Thriving Health: A New Approach To Understanding The Health Of Indigenous Canadians, Chantelle Richmond, Nancy Ross, Grace Egeland

Chantelle Richmond

We examined the importance of social support in promoting thriving health among indigenous Canadians, a disadvantaged population. We categorized the self-reported health status of 31625 adult indigenous Canadians as thriving (excellent, very good) or nonthriving (good, fair, poor). We measured social support with indices of positive interaction, emotional support, tangible support, and affection and intimacy. We used multivariable logistic regression analyses to estimate odds of reporting thriving health, using social support as the key independent variable, and we controlled for educational attainment and labor force status. Compared with women reporting low levels of social support, those reporting high levels of …

The Social Determinants Of Inuit Health: A Focus On Social Support In The Canadian Arctic, Chantelle Richmond Dec 2013

The Social Determinants Of Inuit Health: A Focus On Social Support In The Canadian Arctic, Chantelle Richmond

Chantelle Richmond

Objectives. Societies that foster socially supportive networks produce healthier populations. Social support is a significant determinant of health among Canada’s Inuit population; however, little is known about the characteristics that provide access to social support among Inuit. This exploratory analysis describes how 4 types of social support (namely, positive social interaction, emotional support, tangible support and affection and intimacy) differ in relation to various determinants of health. Study design. Micro-data from the Arctic Supplement of the 2001 Aboriginal Peoples Survey (n=26,290) was used. Methods. Cross-tabulations and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to examine levels (high/low) of the 4 types …

Steers, Queers And Pioneers, Elaine P. Lennon Dr Dec 2013

Steers, Queers And Pioneers, Elaine P. Lennon Dr

Dr Elaine Lennon

The interplay of Barbara Stanwyck’s emotionally intense performances with the tropes of the western created an iconic series of films during the decade when the genre reached its mature form and challenges the view that women’s roles were subordinated to those of men. The representation of women in Westerns has always posed questions deeply rooted in the origins of the genre. Complicating the issue for our understanding of the issues is the problem presented by the star persona and its interaction with the ideological subtext and female representation in roles that appear to be typically male. Stanwyck’s cycle of westerns …

Building Sustainable Societies: Exploring Sustainability Policy And Practice In The Age Of High Consumption, Cindy Isenhour Dec 2013

Building Sustainable Societies: Exploring Sustainability Policy And Practice In The Age Of High Consumption, Cindy Isenhour

Cindy Isenhour

This dissertation is an attempt to examine how humans in wealthy, post-industrial urban contexts understand sustainability and respond to their concerns given their sphere of influence. I focus specifically on sustainable consumption policy and practice in Sweden, where concerns for sustainability and consumer-based responses are strong. This case raises interesting questions about the relative strength of sustainability movements in different cultural and geo-political contexts as well as the specific factors that have motivated the movement toward sustainable living in Sweden.

The data presented here supports the need for multigenic theories of sustainable consumerism. Rather than relying on dominant theories of …

Mothering And Literacies, Amanda Richey, Linda Evans Dec 2013

Mothering And Literacies, Amanda Richey, Linda Evans

Linda S. Evans

This collection explores the connections between mothering/motherhood and literacy as it is broadly defined. Literacy, in this case, encompasses reading/writing literacy as well as multimodal, new or digital, and contested multiliteracies that are socioculturally situated and contextually defined. Mothers are often the object of cultural and popular discourses on family literacy, as well as targets in international campaigns to increase literacy learning. There has been little scholarly attention paid to how mothers in diverse sociocultural contexts do literacy, or how literacies have been mediated or challenged by mothers and motherhood. By critically examining the connections between mothers and literacies, this …
