Building Research Capacity Through Community-Based Projects, Kathryn M. Weston, Judy Mullan, Peter L. Mclennan Oct 2011

Building Research Capacity Through Community-Based Projects, Kathryn M. Weston, Judy Mullan, Peter L. Mclennan

Judy Mullan

Research during general practitioner (GP) training has historically been underrepresented in the medical curriculum. Few GPs in Australia have postgraduate research qualifications and few engage actively in research. The development of an integrated and innovative curriculum at an Australian university provides a unique opportunity to embed research and critical analysis (RCA) at every stage of the programme.

Strategies To Improve Student Reaction To Group Work, L. Kriflik, Judy Mullan Oct 2011

Strategies To Improve Student Reaction To Group Work, L. Kriflik, Judy Mullan

Judy Mullan

After receiving negative feedback from students and tutors about their group work experiences in a health subject, strategies to resolve these collaborative learning issues were considered. The objectives were to facilitate student ability to resolve group work issues, highlight group work as an important graduate attribute and to improve perceptions of the benefits of group work. A literature review assisted in identifying several strategies that had been used elsewhere to resolve issues similar to those raised by the students in this study. Consequently a number of support resources were designed for the revised delivery of the subject to the next …

Social Networks Enabled Coordination Model For Cost Management Of Patient Hospital Admissions, Shahadat Uddin, Liaquat Hossain Sep 2011

Social Networks Enabled Coordination Model For Cost Management Of Patient Hospital Admissions, Shahadat Uddin, Liaquat Hossain

Shahadat Uddin

In this study, we introduce a social networks enabled coordination model for exploring the effect of network position of “patient,” “physician,” and “hospital” actors in a patient-centered care network that evolves during patient hospitalization period on the total cost of coordination. An actor is a node, which represents an entity such as individual and organization in a social network. In our analysis of actor networks and coordination in the healthcare literature, we identified that there is significant gap where a number of promising hospital coordination model have been developed (e.g., Guided Care Model, Chronic Care Model) for the current healthcare …

Comparing Postwar (West) German-Polish And Sino-Japanese Reconciliation: A Bridge Too Far?, Yinan He Sep 2011

Comparing Postwar (West) German-Polish And Sino-Japanese Reconciliation: A Bridge Too Far?, Yinan He

Yinan He

The article argues that the harmonisation of national memories facilitates genuine reconciliation, while memory divergence resulting from national mythmaking hampers reconciliation. After WWII, Sino–Japanese and West German–Polish relations were antagonised by the Cold War structure, and pernicious myths prevailed in national collective memory. Then China and Japan brushed aside historical legacy for immediate diplomatic normalisation, but their reconciliation was impeded by elite mythmaking practices. Since the 1970s West Germany and Poland have de-mythified war history and engaged in historical settlement, paving the way for deep reconciliation after the Cold War

The Casualisation Of Teaching And The Subject At Risk, Alisa Percy, Rosemary Beaumont Jul 2011

The Casualisation Of Teaching And The Subject At Risk, Alisa Percy, Rosemary Beaumont

Alisa Percy, PhD

The casualisation of teaching in Australian higher education has come to be problematised as a risk to the quality of teaching and learning. However, the potential and location of risk, and therefore what constitutes an appropriate institutional intervention, requires interrogation as universities comply with the various regulations that, on the one hand, legitimise further casualisation in the name of flexibility, and on the other, insist on institutional responsibilities in the performance of quality. Taking a critical approach to risk consciousness, this paper examines the way casualisation is produced through workplace reform and problematised as a danger to the student learning …

Learning Advising Practice And Reform: A Perspective From The University Of Wollongong, Australia, Alisa Percy, Bronwyn James, Jeannette Stirling, Ruth Walker Jul 2011

Learning Advising Practice And Reform: A Perspective From The University Of Wollongong, Australia, Alisa Percy, Bronwyn James, Jeannette Stirling, Ruth Walker

Alisa Percy, PhD

The claim made in this paper is that higher education reform and learning advising practice are not simply part of a natural progression; rather, they are discursively constituted. To illustrate this argument we draw on the work of Michel Foucault to reflect on two iterations of learning advising practice in Learning Development at the University of Wollongong, Australia over the last decade. Our discussion will demonstrate how a multiplicity of discourses underpin educational reform and privilege particular learning advising practices in the Australian higher education context.

Tutors' Forum: Engaging Distributed Communities Of Practice, Rosemary Beaumont, Jeannette Stirling, Alisa Percy Jul 2011

Tutors' Forum: Engaging Distributed Communities Of Practice, Rosemary Beaumont, Jeannette Stirling, Alisa Percy

Alisa Percy, PhD

The need to engage students studying at a distance in order to reduce isolation, foster a sense of belonging, and enhance learning has received significant attention over the past few years. Conversely, very little research has focused on teachers working in this type of environment. In fact, we argue, they appear to be the forgotten dimension in „communities‟ of distance learning. In this paper we identify some of the problems generated by teaching university subjects simultaneously across a network of campuses: a practice known as multi-location teaching. We examine strategies for engaging multi-location teachers as key contributors to a quality …

Bibliographic Notes On Captain R.M. Westmacott's "Sketches In Australia", Michael K. Organ Jun 2011

Bibliographic Notes On Captain R.M. Westmacott's "Sketches In Australia", Michael K. Organ

Michael Organ

During my investigations into the life and times of Robert Marsh Westmacott (Aide-de-Camp to Governor Bourke from 1832 to 1837; artist and settler in Illawarra from 1837 to 1847), a somewhat mysterious figure like so many of our early colonial artists, I have encountered a number of variations of his published collection of eighteen tinted lithographs plus descriptive text, entitled Sketches in Australia. The question arose: is the work a true 'book' or merely a collection of lithographs? The bibliographic details for this work are described by Ferguson, 4955. However my studies have revealed a number of important variations of …

A Temple Framework Of The Atonement, Adam J. Johnson Jun 2011

A Temple Framework Of The Atonement, Adam J. Johnson

Adam J. Johnson

This article builds on G. K. Beale's work on the temple, exploring the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in relation to the biblical theology of the temple. It explores the work of Christ as the one who fulfilled the role of the temple both in terms of its prophesied destruction and in terms of its rebuilding and the culmination of its purpose as the presence of God in the midst of his holy people. In conclusion, the article considers some of the practical ramifications of seeing Christ's work from this particular vantage-point.

Sport And The Media In Ireland: An Introduction, Seán Crosson Dr., Philip Dine Apr 2011

Sport And The Media In Ireland: An Introduction, Seán Crosson Dr., Philip Dine

Seán Crosson

[Introduction to Media History Special Issue on Sport and the Media in Ireland]. The symbiotic relationship that has existed since the mid-nineteenth century between sport and the media - from the popular press, through newsreels and radio, to television, and beyond - is so well established as hardly to require comment. However, the very familiarity of this long and successful marriage should not blind us to its abiding, and abidingly remarkable, affective power, both for individuals and for communities, real and ‘imagined’, of all kinds. We may thus legitimately pause to reflect on the key role played by the media …

Caperton, Due Process, And Judicial Duty: Recusal Oversight In Patrons’ Cases, Steve Sheppard Jan 2011

Caperton, Due Process, And Judicial Duty: Recusal Oversight In Patrons’ Cases, Steve Sheppard

Steve Sheppard

In celebration of the life of Judge William E. Enfield, this article discusses the necessity of granting all litigants the right to fair trials with impartial judges. Judges should recuse themselves from cases that involve conflicts of interest, which may result in partiality from the bench. However, judges do not always opt for recusal, even when their impartiality is in question. In Caperton v. A.T. Massey Coal Co., 556 U.S. 868 (2009), the Court evaluated West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Brent Benjamin’s decision not to disqualify himself from a case involving a litigant who made large contributions to his election …

Medicines Management In Mental Health, Austyn Snowden, Derek T. Barron Jan 2011

Medicines Management In Mental Health, Austyn Snowden, Derek T. Barron

Derek T Barron

This article provides evidence to suggest that mental health nurses may not be as competent in medicines management as they believe themselves to be. A psychological model of skills awareness is used throughout the article to offer a theoretical explanation of this putative deficit and provide discussion of the possible causes. Training directed towards improving medicines management skills will be introduced. Training such as this is essential if mental health nurses are to offer the best care to those in receipt of their services and make best use of the opportunities provided by prescribing legislation

“Croke Park Goes Plumb Crazy”: Pathé Newsreels And Gaelic Games, 1920-1939, Seán Crosson Dr., Dónal Mcanallen Dr.

Seán Crosson

(Co-written with Dónal McAnallen) From the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922, and over the next two decades, arose great efforts in Ireland to augment political independence from Britain with enhanced cultural separation. During this period the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) enjoyed a boom in numbers of players and supporters, thus confirming hurling and Gaelic football as the definitively Irish national games and the association itself as the most popular mass movement for the expression of independent Irish identity. Yet paradoxically, given the popular association of Gaelic games with Irish independence, nearly all footage of these games from …

Trajectories Of Depression And Their Relationship With Health Status And Social Service Use, Chun-Min Chen, Judy Mullan, David Griffiths, Irene A. Kreis, Tzuo-Yun Lan, Herng-Chia Chiu

Judy Mullan

This longitudinal study was conducted between 1994 and 2004 in a cohort of Southern Taiwan community-living elderly residents. The study aims to explore the trajectories of depression and how these patterns differed between respondents who survived and those who died during data collection phases; this study also investigated how health status change and health/social service use predicted the different trajectories of depression. Eight hundred and ten participants had completed all six waves of the survey or were followed-up at each wave until death in the prospective study in Kaohsiung City. Depressive symptoms were evaluated by the Short Psychiatric Evaluation Schedule …

Challenges Of Older Patients’ Knowledge About Warfarin Therapy, Sayeed Nasser, Judy Mullan, Beata Bajorek

Judy Mullan

Objective: To review the challenges of warfarin education for older patients (aged 65 years or older) in terms of knowledge, access to warfarin education, and education resources. Methods: A quasi-systematic review of the literature was performed via electronic database searches (eg, Medline, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, Meditext, and Google Scholar) from 1990 to May 2011. Results: The 62 articles reviewed found that improved patient knowledge results in better anticoagulation control. The review also found that between 50% and 80% of older patients have inadequate knowledge about the basic aspects of warfarin therapy …
