Between Myths And Reality--Macedonia Between Turkey And The European Union, Marija Đorđeska
Between Myths And Reality--Macedonia Between Turkey And The European Union, Marija Đorđeska
Dr Marija Dordeska
The spirit of Alexander the Great still stirs ghosts between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia. Macedonia is on its way to the EU and Greece represents an obstacle for these processes in the aftermath of the name dispute and the Greek veto on the Macedonian membership in NATO and the European Union. The major asset Greece has in regards to Macedonia is the veto power over the future accession talks Macedonia could have with international organizations, especially with the European Union. Instead of Greece taking Macedonia under its wing, Macedonia continues to be perceived as a threat to Greek …

Cloud Computing Providers And Data Security Law: Building Trust With United States Companies, Jared A. Harshbarger Esq.
Cloud Computing Providers And Data Security Law: Building Trust With United States Companies, Jared A. Harshbarger Esq.
Jared A. Harshbarger
Cloud computing and software-as-a-service (SaaS) models are revolutionizing the information technology industry. As these services become more prevalent, data security and privacy concerns will also rise among consumers and the companies who consider using them. Cloud computing providers must establish a sufficient level of trust with their potential customers in order to ease initial fears - and ensure certain compliance obligations will be met - at least to the extent that any such inquiring customer will feel comfortable enough to ultimately take the irreversible step of releasing their sensitive data and personal information into the cloud.
Alliance Compliance: The Divergence In Us–Eu Airline Alliance Review Policies, Peter J. White Jd
Alliance Compliance: The Divergence In Us–Eu Airline Alliance Review Policies, Peter J. White Jd
Peter J White
Throughout the late twentieth century and into recent years, the airline industry has been characterized by a vast increase in global airline alliances. However, due to strict ownership restrictions, air carriers cannot take advantage of international mergers or takeovers. As a result, many air carriers enter into alliances with other air carriers in order to create an extensive international network, allowing them to benefit from economies of scope and density. An alliance also may allow an air carrier to operate more efficiently by eliminating duplication of costs, thereby allowing the air carrier to perform a better service for its customers. …

The Central American Constitutional Identity.- A Study Of The Constitutional Imitation Phenomenon In The Integration Process Of The Region, Lidia P. Castillo Amaya
Lidia P. Castillo Amaya
This paper will present some preliminary conclusions drawn after conducting the first stage of a research project, which intends to study the constitutional characteristics of the Integration Process of Central America (in its diachronic and synchronic dimension) by means of assessing its legal and extralegal formants in order to verify if its structure and modality are a result of a specific historical and cultural context with elements of originality and innovation; or if they are a mere consequence of a strict “constitutional imitation” of foreign external models (EU) shaped by the interests of the dominant economic elite; or if we …
Overview Of The Evolution Of China's Central Bank And Monetary Policy: Correlation To The European Union, Alida S. Skold
Overview Of The Evolution Of China's Central Bank And Monetary Policy: Correlation To The European Union, Alida S. Skold
Alida S. Skold
As an innovator in the financial system, China was the first to use paper currency. Eventually the form of currency was held responsible for devastating inflation and was abandoned during the Ming Dynasty. Going forward in time, uprisings and discontent have emphasized the importance of controlling inflation. The central bank is pivotal in issuing monetary policy to control inflation and to maintain financial stability as the government transforms itself from a planned economy to a mixed market economy. The transforming economy is moving toward a free market system through series of economic reforms. The correlation between China’s structure and the …

Why Europe Should Say No To The Proposed Framework Of Economic Governance: A Legal And Policy Analysis In Light Of The Establishment Of The European Stability Mechanism And The Euro Plus Pact, Vasileios Paliouras
Vasileios Paliouras
The eurozone sovereign debt crisis, despite all the pain and suffering that has caused to the peoples of the affected countries of the European periphery, has the potential to serve the purpose of European integration, if the right signals are transmitted to the political establishment of Europe. Clearly, the crisis has challenged the basic premise that underpinned the creation of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), namely that coordination of economic policies would be enough to safeguard the consensus over the common currency. During the last year the leaders of eurozone Member States have taken unprecedented action to make up …
Regulating Short Selling In Europe After The Crisis, Rodolphe Baptiste Elineau
Regulating Short Selling In Europe After The Crisis, Rodolphe Baptiste Elineau
Rodolphe Baptiste Elineau
Short selling contributes to the efficient functioning of capital markets. While bullish investors tend to hold long positions, bearish investors act on information by shorting stock, therefore fostering the incorporation of good and bad information into stock prices. However short sellers are ill viewed by corporate officers and directors and financial regulators. In the midst of the 2008 global financial crisis, several financial regulators in the European Union issued emergency orders to crack down on short sellers, which resulted in a fragmented approach to short selling and created a case for regulatory action at the European Union level. This article …

Financial Crises In The United States And The European Union: Policy Responses, Successes And Failures And The Need For Further, Cross-National Reform, Jason Rudderman
Jason Rudderman
This paper examines the causes of the global financial crisis of 2008-2009 and explores the major financial reforms in the United States and the EU, offers comparisons of the legislation and recommends changes to the legislations that are aimed at minimizing the burden on taxpayers, and balancing the necessary intervention of governments in financial markets and the economy with capitalistic ideals. The lack of government oversight, predatory lending practices, and an overall environment of deregulation leading up to the financial crisis ultimately led to its collapse in late 2008. In response to the collapse of the global financial system, the …

In the United Kingdom, and to a lesser extent the United States, an inter vivos gift, once given, cannot be reclaimed by the giver’s heirs. In civil law countries the situation is quite different: Not only spouses, but issue and in some cases even ascendants, are entitled to a forced share of a decedent’s estate – and these forced shares are assessed against a notional “estate” that includes the testator’s inter vivos gifts. If the total of these forced shares exceeds the amount actually available in the decedent’s estate at death, the recipients of the gifts, or their successors, may …

The Evolution Of Public Attitudes Toward Immigration In Europe And The United States, 2000-2010, Joel Fetzer
The Evolution Of Public Attitudes Toward Immigration In Europe And The United States, 2000-2010, Joel Fetzer
Joel Fetzer
This paper documents and analyzes trends in immigration-related public opinion over the past decade in the major North Atlantic countries of the EU-15 and US. Opening with a summary of the international social-scientific literature on the roots of immigration attitudes, the essay next documents changes in the average European’s and American’s views on migration since 2000 using such polls as the Eurobarometer, European Social Survey, World Values Survey, International Social Science Programme, and American National Election Study. A third major section employs over-time statistical models to examine the (minimal) impact of the current economic crisis on such attitudes. Finally, the …
Where Does The Critique Of Consumer-Based Economic Governance Stand Today?, John Haskell, Luigi Russi
Where Does The Critique Of Consumer-Based Economic Governance Stand Today?, John Haskell, Luigi Russi
Luigi Russi
This paper addresses the increasing importance of the ‘consumer society’ paradigm in the shaping of economic policy and legislation, explores its foundational ideas and disputes, and introduces seven critiques that have surfaced with new currency among scholars and civil society in the wake of the ongoing financial crisis. The developments and critiques surrounding the consumer-based model of governance intimate a much broader story of shifting economic thought and socio-political contestation around the globe. This paper seeks both to capture the larger story and harness its complexity to a specific set of dynamics by using the European Union as a case …
Sheep And Their Herders: Testing The Myth Of Rational Voters – A Latvian Case Study, Daniel Brou, Kirk Collins, Brent Mckenzie
Sheep And Their Herders: Testing The Myth Of Rational Voters – A Latvian Case Study, Daniel Brou, Kirk Collins, Brent Mckenzie
Daniel Brou
Through the use of a simple behavioural political economy model, we cast doubt on the assumption that voters behave in predictable ways dependent on their expected support for government policies. We show that under certain conditions an unfavourable (i.e. welfare reducing) policy may result, even with well-informed, welfare maximising voters. While true that voter behaviour may align with government policies, this alignment has more to do with a perceived lack of influence, rather than policy support. The case of Latvia's accession to the European Union is used as a case study to evaluate the government's policy in terms of voting …

The Chimera Of Europe’S Normative Power In East Asia: A Constructivist Analysis, Salvador Santino F. Regilme Jr.
Salvador Santino Jr. F Regilme
Utilising constructivism this work analyses the contemporary relational complexities of East Asia vis-à-vis the European Union (EU). Mindful of the social constructivist themes of identity and interests, it is argued that there are fundamental difficulties found in these interregional relations, which must be urgently addressed. The EU continues to be under-valued and misunderstood in the eyes of the East Asian public; despite the relatively strong economic and political engagement of the Union. With the emergence of China as a global actor, Europe must reinforce its political capital amidst the failures of the EU to reconcile its policy inconsistencies juxtaposed with …
