The Validity Of The Growing Disciples In Community Model Among Adolescents In Seventh-Day Adventist Schools In North America, Kathleen Beagles Nov 2009

The Validity Of The Growing Disciples In Community Model Among Adolescents In Seventh-Day Adventist Schools In North America, Kathleen Beagles

Kathleen Beagles

There is little empirical research about discipleship, and particularly discipleship and adolescents. An understanding of Christian discipleship might, however, be an antidote for a growing trend toward consumer mentality in the church, the effect of post-Christian culture on the home, and the departure of the younger generations from active church life, which are all seen as problems that face Western Christianity. The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of a discipleship model—Growing Disciples in Community.

The Southern Dissenting Clergy And The American Revolution, Cline Edwin Hall Nov 2009

The Southern Dissenting Clergy And The American Revolution, Cline Edwin Hall

Cline Edwin Hall

The purpose of this study was to determine the importance of the southern dissenting clergy in the American Revolution. Rapidly growing in numbers in the quarter century before the Revolution, these men began to take places of leadership in which they could actively influence their communities. Even though their sermons were important sources of whig ideology, the clergy had a natural tendency to steer away from political involvement. This reluctance, along with their location outside the political and religious establishment in the South, forced them into a position of moderation rather than militant leadership regarding the issues leading to the …

Looking For The Least: An Analysis And Evaluation Of Interpretive Issues Which Have Influenced The Interpretation Of The Judgment Of The Sheep And Goats (Matthew 25:31--46), Gaylen P. Leverett

Gaylen P. Leverett

This dissertation analyses and evaluates the interpretive issues which have influenced the interpretation of Matthew's Judgment of the Sheep and Goats (Matt 25:31-46). The first chapter summarizes 18 interpretations of Matt 25:31-46 drawn from the reading perspectives of scholars who represent distinct approaches to interpretation from ancient to post-modern times. This chapter demonstrates how these commentators' opinions about the locus of meaning affected their interpretations of Matt 25:31-46. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 list and discuss the many other interpretive issues that have influenced the interpretation of Matt 25:31-46. Chapter 2 explains the relevance of theories which have been adopted …

An Analysis Of The Inter-Dependency Of The Prominent Motifs Within The Book Of Qohelet, Richard Alan Fuhr, Jr.

R. Alan Fuhr

This dissertation analyses and evaluates the seven most prominent motifs in the book of Qohelet with a view towards demonstrating the inter-dependency between these motifs. As each motif is evaluated in light of its relationship to other prominent motifs, a balanced approach to Qohelet is reached. Chapter one presents an introduction to the background issues vital to Qohelet studies, along with a survey of current approaches and the presuppositions from which my own analysis of Qohelet will be taken. Chapter 2 begins the evaluation of motifs, focusing on the problem, or "dilemma" of hevel and Qohelet's quest to find a …

Development Of A Multi-Disciplinary Ecological Model For Childhood Obesity, David W. Hey Sep 2009

Development Of A Multi-Disciplinary Ecological Model For Childhood Obesity, David W. Hey

David W. Hey

During the past two decades the prevalence of childhood obesity has steadily increased in the United States. An ecological model of health behavior change has been recommended to address the rise in childhood obesity. The purpose of this study was to build a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary, ecological childhood obesity model by examining past theory and research in 25 journals covering five disciplines over a decade (1993-2002). To identify environmental antecedents, this study collapsed 10 existing ecological models of obesity prevention and divided resultant antecedents (n=94) into five ecological categories (social norms/national policies, community factors, school factors, family/peer or interpersonal factors, and …

An Assessment Of Utah Resident Incentives And Disincentives For Use Of Opencourseware (Ocw), Anne Arendt

Anne M Arendt

This dissertation examines Utah resident views of incentives and disincentives for use of OpenCourseWare (OCW) and how they fit into the theoretical framework of perceived innovation attributes established by Rogers. Rogers identified five categories of perceived innovation attributes, which include relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability.

A survey instrument was developed using attributes that emerged from a Delphi technique with input from experts in the OCW field. The survey instrument was sent to 753 (n = 753) random individuals between 18 and 64 years of age throughout Utah based on information obtained from Alseco Data Group, LLC.

A Multivariate Analysis Of Nonperformance Variables As Predictors Of Marching Band Contest Results (Dissertation), David A. Rickels

David A. Rickels

The purpose of this study was to examine a set of nonperformance variables pertaining to high school marching bands, and the relationships between these variables and the scoring results of marching band contests in the United States. The term "nonperformance variable" refers to a characteristic of a competing marching band or its director that was not overtly evaluated by performance criteria at a contest. The need for this study results from the widespread and historically established nature of band competitions, and evidence in prior research demonstrating pressure to compete. This study merged single-state methods and limited sets of variables employed …

Introduction, Robert Tennyson Jan 2009

Introduction, Robert Tennyson

Robert Tennyson

This is a study of the private legislative business of parliament between 1688 and 1774, the preconditions of its growth and the manner of its legitimization. Through the eighteenth century, the products of parliament’s private business increasingly impacted the lives of Englishmen, at every rung on the social ladder. Yet, despite the number, variety and extent of these proposals passing through parliament and sanctioned by its private legislation, our understanding of this critical aspect of parliament’s agency in the eighteenth century is remarkably underdeveloped. This study endeavors to extend our understanding of this business through a detailed examination of the …

Ch 1 The Sea, The Land, The Community, The Individual, Maurizio Vito

Maurizio Vito

My dissertation analyzes the political unconscious of the metaphors of sea and land in works that range from Hesiod to Carl Schmitt, it is a study of how these metaphors, singly and in the interplay between them, are scattered through a wide variety of discourses. It examines the influence that cultural contexts exert on the allegorization of sea and land from ancient Greeks and Romans (Alcaeus, Virgil, Horace, first chapter) to the Italian Renaissance epic (Orlando Furioso and Gerusalemme Liberata, second chapter), and in the “Mediterranean question.” While the third chapter analyzes how nomos – a notion that concerns lawmaking …
