Producer-Scrounger Roles And Joining Based On Dominance In A Free-Living Group Of Mexican Jays (Aphelocoma Ultramarina), John Mccormack, Piotr Jablonski, Jerram Brown

John E. McCormack

While foraging, animals often exploit group members to obtain food. One way to describe this behaviour is with the producer-scrounger (PS) model, where scroungers use social interaction to obtain food discovered by producers. Mexican jays (Aphelocoma ultramarina) are a groupforaging species with a linear dominance hierarchy. We studied interactions in a free-living foraging group to determine (1) if foraging interactions can be explained with the PS model, (2) if these roles are consistent and (3) if dominance or relatedness affects joining frequency. We recorded board-flipping, eating, and joining events during sets of feeding trials. We show that Mexican jays use …

Recent Postglacial Range Expansion Drives The Rapid Diversification Of A Songbird Lineage In The Genus Junco, Borja Milá, John Mccormack, Gabriela Castañeda, Robert Wayne, Thomas Smith

John E. McCormack

Pleistocene glacial cycles are thought to have played a major role in the diversification of temperate and boreal species of North American birds. Given that coalescence times between sister taxa typically range from 0.1 to 2.0 Myr, it has been assumed that diversification occurred as populations were isolated in refugia over long periods of time, probably spanning one to several full glacial cycles. In contrast, the rapid postglacial range expansions and recolonization of northern latitudes following glacial maxima have received less attention as potential promoters of speciation. Here we report a case of extremely rapid diversification in the songbird genus …

We have measured the transverse asymmetry AT' in the quasielastic 3He(e,e') process with high precision at Q2 values from 0.1 to 0.6 (GeV/c)2. The neutron magnetic form factor GnM was extracted at Q2 values of 0.1 and 0.2(GeV/c)2 using a nonrelativistic Faddeev calculation which includes both final-state interactions (FSI) and meson-exchange currents (MEC). Theoretical uncertainties due to the FSI and MEC effects were constrained with a precision measurement of the spin-dependent asymmetry in the threshold region of 3He(e,e'). We also extracted the neutron magnetic form factor …

The Role Of Error In The Conceptual Design Of A Transport Aircraft, Robert A. Mcdonald Jan 2007

The Role Of Error In The Conceptual Design Of A Transport Aircraft, Robert A. Mcdonald

Robert A. McDonald

A fidelity trade environment was demonstrated by using it to simulate a decision making process for a transport aircraft. This scenario was not possible without the fidelity trade environment. The role of system feedback and coupling in error stability was also investigated.
A sensitivity approach which relies on the system sensitivity matrix was used to rapidly approximate the propagation of error through the complex system. In verification tests, the sensitivity approach provided approximate results substantially similar to a Monte Carlo approach that was many orders of magnitude more expensive. The rapid sensitivity approach to modeling error propagation enabled the responsive …

Triflic Acid Controlled Successive Annelation Of Aromatic Sulfonamides: An Efficient One-Pot Synthesis Of N-Sulfonyl Pyrroles, Indoles And Carbazoles, Abid Shaikh, Liliana Teixeira, Béla Török

Abid Shaikh

A novel one-pot synthesis of N-substituted heterocycles via successive cyclization/annelation starting from primary sulfonamides is described. This process directly leads to N-sulfonyl pyrroles, indoles and carbazoles. The selection of an appropriate reactant/triflic acid ratio successfully controls the formation of the desired product.

Using Gold Nanorods To Probe Cell-Induced Collagen Deformation, John W. Stone, Patrick N. Sisco, Edie C. Goldsmith, Sarah C. Baxter, Catherine J. Murphy

John W. Stone

In biological tissue, complex mechanisms of cellular response are closely linked to the mechanical environment that cells experience. The key to understanding these mechanisms may lie in measurement of local mechanical fields near living cells and between cells. We have developed a novel optical measurement technique which combines the light elastically scattered from gold nanorods with digital image analysis to track local deformations that occur in vitro between cells, in real time, under darkfield optical microscopy. We find that measurable tension and compression exist in the intercellular matrix at the length scale of micrometers, as the cells assess, adapt, and …

Closure Under Transfinite Extensions, Edgar E. Enochs, Alina Iacob, Overtoun Jenda

Alina Iacob

The closure under extensions of a class of objects in an abelian category is often an important property of that class. Recently the closure of such classes under transfinite extensions (both direct and inverse) has begun to play an important role in several areas of mathematics, for example, in Quillen's theory of model categories and in the theory of cotorsion pairs. In this paper we prove that several important classes are closed under transfinite extensions.

Synthesis Of Trifluoromethyl-Imines By Solid Acid/Superacid Catalyzed Microwave-Assisted Approach, Abid Shaikh, Markku Savolainen, Shainaz M. Landge, Jinbo Hu, G. K. S. Prakash, George A. Olah, Béla Török

Abid Shaikh

Trifluoromethyl, Imine, Clay, Solid acids, Solid superacid, Catalysis, Microwave irradiation Abstract: A new solid acid/superacid catalyzed microwave assisted synthesis of trifluoromethyl-imines is described. Various α,α,α-trifluoromethylketones react readily with primary amines to produce the corresponding imines. Two different strategies have been employed; one is the application of microwave irradiation coupled with solvent-free solid acid catalysis. The other method, for highly deactivated substrates includes the use of a pressure vessel at 175 °C temperature, with solid superacid catalysis. Using the solid acid K-10 montmorillonite or the superacidic perfluorinated resinsulfonic acid Nafion-H, a wide variety of trifluoromethylated imines have been synthesized using the …

The Effects Of Economic Crisis, Domestic Discord, And State Efficacy On The Decision To Initiate Interstate Conflict, Charles R. Boehmer Jan 2007

The Effects Of Economic Crisis, Domestic Discord, And State Efficacy On The Decision To Initiate Interstate Conflict, Charles R. Boehmer

Charles Boehmer

Studies of diversionary conflict typically claim that lower rates of economic growth and domestic unrest increase the risk of militarized interstate conflict. However, extant research shows that these factors are also related to regime changes. Lower rates of economic growth and domestic conflict should increase the risk that governments are overthrown. This paper investigates the comparative risk of economic growth and domestic turmoil on militarized interstate conflict and regime changes on a sample of over a hundred countries from 1920-1992. I find that higher rates of economic growth are related to violent militarized interstate conflicts and reduce the risk of …

Algorithm Refinement For Fluctuating Hydrodynamics, Alejandro Garcia, Sarah Williams, John B. Bell Jan 2007

Algorithm Refinement For Fluctuating Hydrodynamics, Alejandro Garcia, Sarah Williams, John B. Bell

Alejandro Garcia

This paper introduces an adaptive mesh and algorithm refinement method for fluctuating hydrodynamics. This particle-continuum hybrid simulates the dynamics of a compressible fluid with thermal fluctuations. The particle algorithm is direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC), a molecular-level scheme based on the Boltzmann equation. The continuum algorithm is based on the Landau–Lifshitz Navier–Stokes (LLNS) equations, which incorporate thermal fluctuations into macroscopic hydrodynamics by using stochastic fluxes. It uses a recently developed solver for the LLNS equations based on third-order Runge–Kutta. We present numerical tests of systems in and out of equilibrium, including time-dependent systems, and demonstrate dynamic adaptive refinement by the …

Analysis And Kinetics Of The Sequencing Batch Reactors, Udeme J. Ndon Jan 2007

Analysis And Kinetics Of The Sequencing Batch Reactors, Udeme J. Ndon

Udeme J. Ndon

Fundamental analysis and kinetics of treatment reactors are major topics in environmental engineering literature. These fundamental topics in reactor processes are well known for the ideal batch reactor, the continuous stirred tank reactor, and the plug flow reactor. The sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) are relatively new in the field, but are widely used. Despite the wide application of sequencing batch reactors in the field, information is lacking on the fundamental analysis and kinetics, especially with comparison to the ideal batch reactor. This report presents analysis and kinetics of the sequencing batch reactors and compares the kinetics equations developed with those …

Responsibility For Hiv Prevention: Patterns Of Attribution Among Hiv-Seropositive Gay And Bisexual Men, C. Offer, O. Grinstead, E. Goldstein, Edward M. Mamary, N. Alvarado, J. Euren, W. Woods

Edward M. Mamary

The article presents research based on narratives by gay and bisexual men recently infected with HIV. Researchers looked at the men's attributions of responsibility for infection, comparing recollections of feelings before becoming infected with views expressed after seroconversion. The research responds to a call to better understand risk behavior among HIV-positive persons, in an effort to craft effective prevention interventions. In both before-and after-HIV infection views, survey participants expressed a sense of personal responsibility. Researchers report also nuances of views about shared responsibility.

Numerical Methods For The Stochastic Landau-Lifshitz Navier-Stokes Equations, Alejandro Garcia, John B. Bell, Sarah Williams Jan 2007

Numerical Methods For The Stochastic Landau-Lifshitz Navier-Stokes Equations, Alejandro Garcia, John B. Bell, Sarah Williams

Alejandro Garcia

The Landau-Lifshitz Navier-Stokes (LLNS) equations incorporate thermal fluctuations into macroscopic hydrodynamics by using stochastic fluxes. This paper examines explicit Eulerian discretizations of the full LLNS equations. Several computational fluid dynamics approaches are considered (including MacCormack’s two-step Lax-Wendroff scheme and the piecewise parabolic method) and are found to give good results for the variance of momentum fluctuations. However, neither of these schemes accurately reproduces the fluctuations in energy or density. We introduce a conservative centered scheme with a third-order Runge-Kutta temporal integrator that does accurately produce fluctuations in density, energy, and momentum. A variety of numerical tests, including the random walk …

Corticosterone And Foraging Behaviour In A Pelagic Seabird, F Angelier, Scott A. Shaffer, H Weimerskirch, C Trouvé, O Chastel Jan 2007

Corticosterone And Foraging Behaviour In A Pelagic Seabird, F Angelier, Scott A. Shaffer, H Weimerskirch, C Trouvé, O Chastel

Scott A. Shaffer

Because endocrine mechanisms are thought to mediate behavioral responses to changes in the environment, examining these mechanisms is essential for understanding how long-lived seabirds adjust their foraging decisions to contrasting environmental conditions in order to maximize their fitness. In this context, the hormone corticosterone (CORT) deserves specific attention because of its major connections with locomotor activities. We examined for the first time the relationships between individual CORT levels and measurements of foraging success and behavior using satellite tracking and blood sampling from wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans) before (pretrip CORT levels) and after (posttrip CORT levels) foraging trips during the incubation …

How Heel Oxygenation Changes Under Pressure, Vivian K. Wong, N. A. Stotts, H. W. Hopf, E. S. Froelicher, G. A. Dowling

Vivian K. Wong

The mechanism of heel pressure ulcers after hip surgery is not entirely understood. The purpose of this one-group, prospective, repeated-measures design study was to examine how the external pressure of the bed surface affects heel skin oxygen tension in adults on the first 3 days after hip surgery. Transcutaneous oxygen sensors were placed on the plantar surface of each foot, close to the heels. Measures were taken on room air and with an oxygen challenge with the heels (1) suspended above the bed surface (preload), (2) on the bed surface for 15 minutes (loading), and (3) again suspended above the …

Well-Resolved Coherent Raman Spectra From Femtosecond Pulses, Sukhendu Nath, Diana Urbanek, Sean Kern, Mark Berg Dec 2006

Well-Resolved Coherent Raman Spectra From Femtosecond Pulses, Sukhendu Nath, Diana Urbanek, Sean Kern, Mark Berg

Sean J. Kern

This paper demonstrates a method for measuring coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectra with a resolution limited only by the inherent linewidth of the sample, even when using pulses of a width (60 fs, 300 cm−1) that is between the widths needed for a pure frequency- or time-domain measurement. Data are collected as a function of both delay and frequency and used to recover a standard Raman spectrum. The resulting time/frequency detected experiment represents a bridge between standard time- and frequency-domain approaches to spectroscopy.

Simultaneous Time And Frequency Detection In Femtosecond Coherent Raman Spectroscopy, Sukhendu Nath, Diana Urbanek, Sean Kern, Mark Berg Dec 2006

Simultaneous Time And Frequency Detection In Femtosecond Coherent Raman Spectroscopy, Sukhendu Nath, Diana Urbanek, Sean Kern, Mark Berg

Sean J. Kern

The preceding paper showed that, in principle, a high-resolution coherent Raman spectrum can be recovered using femtosecond probe pulses by combined detection in both time and frequency. This measurement is possible even when the pulses are too broad in frequency for conventional frequency-domain spectroscopy and too broad in time for conventional time-domain spectroscopy. In this paper, the method is tested on experimental coherent anti-stokes Raman spectroscopy data from acetonitrile. Compared to theoretical models, experimental data are complicated by noise and incomplete knowledge of the pulse structure. Despite these complications, most of the information in the Raman spectrum is recovered from …
