Graduate Retention: An Investigation Of Factors Relating To Older Female Graduate Students, Linda Serra Hagedorn
Graduate Retention: An Investigation Of Factors Relating To Older Female Graduate Students, Linda Serra Hagedorn
Linda Serra Hagedorn
While admissions at the undergraduate level are experiencing a surge of students over 30 years of age, the pool of traditionally aged students is declining. These phenomena indicate that older (over age 30) students will also be enrolling in graduate programs in increasing numbers. This paper addresses the issue of retention as it pertains to older female graduate students. Data are examined from a fall 1991 survey and its 1992 followup at a large Midwestern research university. The study evaluated such potential obstacles to female graduation as concern family issues, relationships with faculty and fellow students, difficulty of the coursework, …

News Media Narratives Of Interethnic Isolation And Confrontation In Post-Andrew Dade County, Florida, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr

Hurricane Andrew was the costliest natural disaster to strike the United States, and the strongest hurricane since the 1920s. Andrew permanently changed the landscape by wiping out entire communities and scattering the people who lived in them. At least 20 deaths were directly attributed to the storm. Property damage was calculated into the tens of billions of dollars. We can lessen the impact of such a future event upon people by gaining a greater understanding of the communication patterns that develop among survivors after a hurricane or other natural disaster has passed--particularly, survivors of differing ethnic and cultural backgrounds. By …

Detection Of Deception In Law Enforcement Applicants: A Preliminary Investigation, Randy Borum, Harley Stock

Using the MMPIand the IPI, the present study examined the differences in psychometric defensiveness between two groups of law enforcement applicants: applicants identified as being deceptive and a comparison group of candidates for whom no deception was indicated. Significant differences were found on the traditional validity (minimization) scales for both instruments as well as several supplemental scales and indexes from the MMPI. A new index (Es-K) from the MMPI showed a highly significant difference between groups and good classification accuracy. The results suggest that deceptive applicants show more defensiveness on psychometric testing and that test results may assist in raising …

Speech Patterns And The Concept Of Utility In Cognitive Maps: The Case Of Integrative Bargaining, Tony L. Simons
Speech Patterns And The Concept Of Utility In Cognitive Maps: The Case Of Integrative Bargaining, Tony L. Simons
Tony L. Simons
This study's premise is that negotiation dyads' conceptualization of utility is a key component of their “cognitive maps,” or internal representations, that influences the dyads' assumptions and motivation. A linguistic indicator was developed for utility as an objective attribute, utility as a subjective preference, and utility as an interpersonal relationship. An analysis of 79 transcripts from two negotiation studies revealed that dyads whose members conceptualized utility as a subjective preference reached more integrative agreements than dyads displaying either of the other two conceptualizations. Also, as hypothesized, linguistic patterns from the first half of negotiation were better predictors of agreements than …
The Paradox Of Ideology, Justin Schwartz
The Paradox Of Ideology, Justin Schwartz
Justin Schwartz
A standard problem with the objectivity of social scientific theory in particular is that it is either self-referential, in which case it seems to undermine itself as ideology, or self-excepting, which seem pragmatically self-refuting. Using the example of Marx and his theory of ideology, I show how self-referential theories that include themselves in their scope of explanation can be objective. Ideology may be roughly defined as belief distorted by class interest. I show how Marx thought that natural science was informed by class interest but not therefore necessarily ideology. Capitalists have an interest in understanding the natural world (to a …

Law And Macroeconomics: Employment Discrimination Litigation Over The Business Cycle, John J. Donohue, Peter Siegelman
John Donohue
For the past two decades the law and economics movement has been one of the most influential forces in the legal academy. Its practitioners have relentlessly sought to unleash microeconomic insights on formerly pristine areas of legal doctrine. This Article focuses on a branch of law - employment discrimination-that has already been examined from a microeconomic perspective. However, it represents a departure from the previous literature in that it considers the impact of macroeconomic phenomena on several aspects of employment discrimination litigation.

Participation In Science Courses In Senior Secondary School, John Ainley
Participation In Science Courses In Senior Secondary School, John Ainley
Dr John Ainley
In previous research, participation in science studies in senior secondary school has been related to both background characteristics of students and to earlier achievements and interests. This paper reports an investigation of participation in combinations of subjects in senior secondary schools in Australia which embody different science orientations. It shows that different combinations of factors shape participation in physical science' and 'biological and other science' types of course. Both are favoured by investigative interest but participation in a physical science course type is strongly associated with high levels of earlier school achievement in numeracy and gender whereas participation in a …

Female Doctoral Students: How Age Differentiates Institutional Choice, Retention Enhancement, And Scholarly Accomplishments, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Susan K. Doyle
Linda Serra Hagedorn
This study, conducted at an urban research university, attempted to identify those conditions valuable in recruiting and subsequently retaining older (over 35 years of age) female doctoral students. The study used data from a Spring 1991 survey of all graduate students which solicited information about experiences, accomplishments, and growth attributable to the graduate experience. Seventy-nine percent of female doctoral students participated in the survey. Sample size for statistical tests varied from 257 to 309. The analysis compared the responses of women under 35 to those of women 35 and over in institutional choice, retention enhancement, and professional accomplishments. Findings indicated …

The Persistence Of Power And The Struggle For Dialogic Standards In Postmodern Constitutional Jurisprudence: Michelman, Habermas, And Civic Republicanism, Stephen M. Feldman
The Persistence Of Power And The Struggle For Dialogic Standards In Postmodern Constitutional Jurisprudence: Michelman, Habermas, And Civic Republicanism, Stephen M. Feldman
Stephen M. Feldman
Since the 1950s, most constitutional scholars have presumed that the American political system is pluralistic, with autonomous individuals struggling in the legislative arena to maximize the satisfaction of their preexisting private interests. The "new republicans" reject these presumptions and insist that constitutional jurisprudence must recognize the potential for virtuous citizens to engage in a political dialogue that generates public values and identifies a common good. Frank I. Michelman has pioneered this revival by confronting one of the most troubling and persistent difficulties of civic republican thought: the likelihood that the political dialogue will be closed to segments of the community …

Battered But Not Beaten: Women Who Kill In Self Defence, Ian D. Leader-Elliott Professor
Battered But Not Beaten: Women Who Kill In Self Defence, Ian D. Leader-Elliott Professor
Ian D Leader-Elliott Professor
This essay commences with a critical evaluation of the battered woman syndrome. It continues with an illustrative biographical fragment, before discussing the polemics of excuse and justification in American criminal law. The concluding section provides an account of the law of self defence and provocation in their application to defensive homicides against attack by an intimate aggressor. The argument of the essay is that Australian common law is capable of discriminating and compassionate justice, in cases of self defence against intimate aggressors and provocation by intimate aggressors. Recourse to the dubious theory that the victims of domestic violence are characterised …
