Class Structure In Australian History - Poverty And Progress, Terry Irving, Raewyn Connell
Class Structure In Australian History - Poverty And Progress, Terry Irving, Raewyn Connell
Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)
First published in 1980, this book is an updated and reorganized account of the history of the class structure in Australia. A new chapter discusses the period 1975-1991, and there is a new theoretical chapter introducing the reader to modern debates about class. Separate sections for documents and photographs support the narrative. Extensive notes provide a guide to research literature.

Image Segmentation Using An Annealed Hopfield Neural Network, Yungsik Kim, Sarah A. Rajala
Image Segmentation Using An Annealed Hopfield Neural Network, Yungsik Kim, Sarah A. Rajala
Sarah A. Rajala
Good image segmentation can be achieved by finding the optimum solution to an appropriate energy function. A Hopfield neural network has been shown to solve complex optimization problems fast, but it only guarantees convergence to a local minimum of the optimization function. Alternatively, mean field annealing has been shown to reach the global or the nearly global optimum solution when solving optimization problems. Furthermore, it has been shown that there is a relationship between a Hopfield neural network and mean field annealing. In this paper, we combine the advantages of the Hopfield neural network and the mean field annealing algorithm …

The Elastic Moduli Of Simple Two-Dimensional Isotropic Composites: Computer Simulation And Effective Medium Theory, K. A. Snyder, E. J. Garboczi, Anthony Roy Day
The Elastic Moduli Of Simple Two-Dimensional Isotropic Composites: Computer Simulation And Effective Medium Theory, K. A. Snyder, E. J. Garboczi, Anthony Roy Day
Anthony Roy Day
An algorithm, combining digital-image with spring network techniques, has been developed that enables computation of the elastic moduli of random two-dimensional multiphase composites. This algorithm is used to study the case of isotropic, randomly centered, overlapping circular inclusions in an isotropic elastic matrix. The results of the algorithm for the few-inclusion limit, as well as the case where both phases have the same shear moduli, agree well with the exact results for these two problems. The case where the two phases have the same Poisson’s ratio, but different Young’s moduli, is also studied, and it is shown that the effective …

Possible Applications Of Neural Nets To Power System Operation And Control, P. K. Kalra, Alok Srivastava, D. K. Chaturvedi
Possible Applications Of Neural Nets To Power System Operation And Control, P. K. Kalra, Alok Srivastava, D. K. Chaturvedi
D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.
Problems related to power system operation and control are complex and time consuming because of the non-linearities involved in their formulation and solution. Fast solutions to these problems can be obtained only through parallel processing. Neural nets provide massive parallel processing facilities and may also be used efficiently to model systems with non-linearities. The capabilities of neural nets can, therefore, be well utilized in modelling and processing problems related to power systems. In order to reduce the burden on computers, algorithms involving optimization and complex equations can be converted to heuristics. These heuristics can then be represented in terms of …

Nest Usurpation, Supersedure And Colony Failure Contribute To Africanization Of Commercially Managed European Honey Bees In Venezuela, Robert G. Danka, Richard L. Hellmich, Thomas E. Rinderer
Richard L Hellmich
The fates of 58 colonies in 4 apiaries managed commercially for honey production in northwest Venezuela were determined during 15 months. All colonies had been previously requeened with marked European queens. Heritage of new queens (European daughter replacements versus Africanized usurpers) was traced by mitochondrial DNA and morphological characteristics of worker progeny. Three usurpations (5% of colony fates, at a rate of 4.7% of colonies per year) occurred. These colonies showed congruent African-derived mitochondrial DNA and Africanized morphology. Supersedures accounted for much of the introgression of African genes into the test apiaries. Twenty-eight colonies (48%) superseded their queens once, three …

Failure Of The Congo Red Dye Uptake Test To Discriminate Between Virulent And Avirulent Avian Escherichia Coli, Kathy R. Spears, Richard E. Wooley, John Brown, Lisa K. Nolan
Lisa K. Nolan
Twenty avian Escherichia coli isolates from normal and diseased chickens were compared by use of three virulence tests. These tests included the uptake of Congo red dye, an embryo lethality test, and a quantitative microtiter complement resistance test. A direct correlation was seen between the results of the complement resistance test and the embryo lethality test. The results of the Congo red test did not correlate with the two other tests.
Isolation And Characterization Of The Tricarboxylate Transporter From Pea Mitochondria, Cecilia A. Mcintosh, David J. Oliver
Isolation And Characterization Of The Tricarboxylate Transporter From Pea Mitochondria, Cecilia A. Mcintosh, David J. Oliver
David J. Oliver
The tricarboxylate transporter was solubilized from pea (Pisum sativum) mitochondria with Triton X-114, partially purified over a hydroxylapatite column, and reconstituted in phospholipid vesicles. The proteoliposomes exchanged external [14C]citrate for internal citrate or malate but not for preloaded D,L-isocitrate. Similarly, although external malate, succinate, and citrate competed with [14C]citrate in the exchange reaction, D,L-isocitrate and phosphoenolpyruvate did not. This tricarboxylate transporter differed from the equivalent activity from animal tissues in that it did not transport isocitrate and phosphoenolpyruvate. In addition, tricarboxylate transport in isolated plant mitochondria, as well as that measured with the partially purified and reconstituted transporter, was less …

Cross sections for inclusive electron scattering from aluminum have been measured at both forward and backward angles in the kinematic region near x =1 and 1.75 & Q & 7 (GeV/c) . The forward-angle data are in good agreement with a recent calculation. Both the data and the calculation show scaling behavior for F2(g, Q~)=vs(g, Q2) at high Q for fixed values of the Nachtmann variable g. The ratio R =oL /trr has been extracted for 1.75 &Q &5 (GeV/c) and is found to decrease with Q2 to a value consistent with zero at the highest Q~.

Can Ethnography Save The Life Of Medical Ethics?, Barry Hoffmaster
Can Ethnography Save The Life Of Medical Ethics?, Barry Hoffmaster
C. Barry Hoffmaster
Since its inception contemporary medical ethics has been regarded by many of its practitioners as ‘applied ethics’, that is, the application of philosophical theories to the moral problems that arise in health care. This ‘applied ethics’ model of medical ethics is, however, beset with internal and external difficulties. The internal difficulties point out that the model is intrinsically flawed. The external difficulties arise because the model does not fit work in the field. Indeed, the strengths of that work are its highly nuanced, particularized analyses of cases and issues and its appreciation of the circumstances and contexts that generate and …

Two Medieval Soteriologies: Anselm Of Canterbury And Julian Of Norwich, Joan Nuth
Joan M. Nuth
Compares the soteriologies of Anselm of Canterbury and Julian of Norwich. Immense influence of Anselm's `Cur Deus Homo' upon the development of soteriology; Julian's `Showings' as an important medieval soteriological study alongside with `Cur Deus Homo'; Similarities which bring closer together the seemingly extreme justice-rationalism of Anselm and the unseemingly unqualified universalism of Julian.

A Review Of The Factors Influencing The Growth Of The Northern Quahog, Mercenaria Mercenaria (Linnaeus, 1758), Michael A. Rice, Jan A. Pechenik
Michael A Rice
Factors affecting the growth of larval, juvenile, and adult northern quahogs, Mercenaria mercenaria, are reviewed. Larval growth is affected by temperature, salinity, current speed, dissolved oxygen concentration, and the amount of suspended sediments in the water, along with such nutritional factors as food quantity and quality. Growth of post-set juvenile and adult quahogs is similarly affected by the same physical and nutritional factors. Recent work suggests that there is a strong genetic contribution to quahog growth rate and that selective breeding programs may be useful for producing rapid growth strains. A growing body of evidence suggests that larval growth rates …
