Eucharist And Dragon Fighting As Resistance: Against Commodity Fetishism And Scientism, Jeffery Nicholas Jul 2015

Eucharist And Dragon Fighting As Resistance: Against Commodity Fetishism And Scientism, Jeffery Nicholas

Jeffery Nicholas

This paper examines two practices – the Roman Catholic Practice of Eucharist and the game Dungeons and Dragons – to show how social critique can be mounted from within a practice. It begins by relating Alasdair MacIntyre’s notion of tradition to his earlier analysis of ideology and to the notion of ideology in general. The paper then tackles two dominant forms of ideology – Commodity Fetishism and Scientism – and shows how both Eucharist and Dungeons and Dragons promote critical thinking to resist those ideologies. In the process, it denies the Althusserian-Foucauldian analysis of ideology as mere materiality and defends …

Is Zina Bil Jabr A Hadd, Taz‛Ir Or Siyasa Offence?: A Reappraisal Of The Protection Of Women Act 2006 In Pakistan”, Muhammad Munir Dr. Dec 2008

Is Zina Bil Jabr A Hadd, Taz‛Ir Or Siyasa Offence?: A Reappraisal Of The Protection Of Women Act 2006 In Pakistan”, Muhammad Munir Dr.

Dr. Muhammad Munir

This article briefly discusses the various laws passed by the regime of General Musharraf (1999-2008) to relieve the plight of helpless women in Pakistan and analyses the Protection of Women Act, 2006 from a legal, rather than from a political or emotional perspective. It scrutinizes the opinions of leading 'ulama, such as Justice (R) Taqi 'Uthmani, Mufti Muneebur Rahman, Moulana 'Abdul Malik, and Hasan Madani. The position of women rights' groups about the said law is discussed; the claim of the then government that the Act is compatible with the Qur'an and the Sunnah is examined; the various changes made …

The Grand Jury Legal Advisor: Resurrecting The Grand Jury's Shield, Thaddeus Hoffmeister Dec 2008

The Grand Jury Legal Advisor: Resurrecting The Grand Jury's Shield, Thaddeus Hoffmeister

Thaddeus Hoffmeister

This Article advocates for the creation of a Grand Jury Legal Advisor (GJLA) to resurrect the historical autonomy of grand juries. The Article draws upon Hawaii’s experiences with the GJLA, and incorporates survey responses from a representative sample of former GJLAs.

The Article begins with a general and historical overview of the grandjury process. This portion of the Article demonstrates how all three branches of government have contributed to the diminishment of the powers of grand jurors. Part IV of this Article discusses the important policy

rationales underlying the need for grand jury autonomy; Part V recommends the implementation of …

Laser-Induced Photon-Branched Chain Reaction In A Chemically-Active Gas-Dispersed Medium, Thomas F. George, Renat R. Letfullin, Galen C. Duree Dec 2008

Laser-Induced Photon-Branched Chain Reaction In A Chemically-Active Gas-Dispersed Medium, Thomas F. George, Renat R. Letfullin, Galen C. Duree

Thomas George

A promising avenue in the development of high-energy pulsed chemical HF/DF lasers and amplifiers is the utilization of a photon-branched chain reaction initiated in a two-phase active medium, that is, a medium containing a laser working gas and ultradispersed passivated metal particles. These particles are evaporated under the action of IR laser radiation which results in the appearance of free atoms, their diffusion into the gas, and the development of a photon-branching chain process, which involves photons as both reactants and products. The key obstacle here is the formation of a relatively large volume (in excess of 10^3 cm^3) of the …

Offshoring: The Evolving Profile Of Corporate Global Restructuring , Kate Bronfenbrenner , Stephanie Luce Dec 2008

Offshoring: The Evolving Profile Of Corporate Global Restructuring , Kate Bronfenbrenner , Stephanie Luce

Kate Bronfenbrenner

For all of the increase in international trade and rising concern about shifting of manufacturing and service jobs away from the United States, there is remarkably little detailed data on the scope of outsourcing. In part that reflects corporation's reluctance to announce plans to shift production or office work overseas. Even more, it is a consequence of the U.S. government's failure to collect data on the phenomenon. This article reports on the results of a study intended to fill this information gap. Our research involves a combination of online media tracking and corporate research and the creation of a database …

It Takes More Than House Calls: Organizing To Win With A Comprehensive Union-Building Strategy, Kate Bronfenbrenner, Tom Juravich Dec 2008

It Takes More Than House Calls: Organizing To Win With A Comprehensive Union-Building Strategy, Kate Bronfenbrenner, Tom Juravich

Kate Bronfenbrenner

[Excerpt] Until recently, some national and local union leaders still argued that labor should circle the wagons and take care of existing members rather than spend scarce resources on organizing nonunion workers. Today those voices have largely been silenced by the hard numbers of labor's dramatic decline. As expressed in the platform of the new AFL-CIO leadership slate, the American labor movement must "organize at an unprecedented pace and scale." The question unions face today is no longer whether to make organizing a priority but how that can best be achieved.

Intelligent Multimedia Delivery? It’S A Question Of Semantics, Joseph Thomas-Kerr, I. Burnett, C. Ritz Dec 2008

Intelligent Multimedia Delivery? It’S A Question Of Semantics, Joseph Thomas-Kerr, I. Burnett, C. Ritz

Ian Burnett

Intelligent multimedia delivery uses semantic information about content to enhance the delivery process. This paper proposes a model for intelligent multimedia delivery that advances the state of the art by incorporating a concept of semantic distortion into the delivery optimization process. Furthermore, the model combines format-independence with rate-distortion optimization to provide a flexible framework for intelligent delivery of multimedia in existing and future formats. The paper provides a review of the existing work covering components of the model: scalable coding formats, rate-distortion optimization, format-independent adaptation, and semantic adaptation. It then details the model, and identifies open problems and opportunities for …

Pre-Processing Of Signals Observed From Laser Diode Self-Mixing Intereferometries Using Neural Networks, L. Wei, Joe F. Chicharo, Yanguang Yu, Jiangtao Xi Dec 2008

Pre-Processing Of Signals Observed From Laser Diode Self-Mixing Intereferometries Using Neural Networks, L. Wei, Joe F. Chicharo, Yanguang Yu, Jiangtao Xi

Professor Jiangtao Xi

This paper presents a novel neural network signal interpolation technique in order to eliminate the noise and disturbance associated with the self-mixing signal observed from optical feedback self- mixing interferometry (OFSMI). The proposed technique aims to improve the accuracy for displacement and moving track measurement of a target. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated by both simulation and experimentation, with simulation revealing a measuring accuracy of A/25 for weak feedback and J20 for moderate feed back.

Carbon-Centric Computing: It Solutions For Climate Change, Aditya K. Ghose, Helen M. Hasan, T. Spedding Dec 2008

Carbon-Centric Computing: It Solutions For Climate Change, Aditya K. Ghose, Helen M. Hasan, T. Spedding

Helen Hasan

IT has a role to play in the current debate on climate change. The current discourse on IT and climate change views IT in a negative light, as a polluter. What remains unrecognized is the critical role of IT as a source of solutions to the climate change problem. We live in a massive, inter-connected Planet Earth Supply Chain. IT provides a range of tools to model, manage and optimize this supply chain. The University of Wollongong Carbon-Centric Computing Initiative (CCCI) seeks to seed a program of research that addresses the climate change problem with a range of computing technologies …
