Growth And Metabolism Of Larval Zebrafish: Effects Of Swim Training, Brian P. Bagatto, B. Pelster, W. W. Burggren
Growth And Metabolism Of Larval Zebrafish: Effects Of Swim Training, Brian P. Bagatto, B. Pelster, W. W. Burggren
Brian P. Bagatto
Larval zebrafish (Danio rerio) of three different age classes ('yolk-sac' larvae, 96 h; 'swim-up' larvae, 9 days old; and 'free-swimming' larvae, 21 days old) were trained for 2, 6 and 11 days, respectively, to swim at 0 body lengths per second (BL s(-1)), 2 BL s(-1) and 5 BL s(-1). Survival was significantly diminished in larvae trained at 5 BL s(-1) compared to controls (0 BL s(-1)). Although training produced no significant differences in mass and length, the youngest larvae absorbed their yolk at a faster rate during training. Routine oxygen consumption (M(O2r)) and mass-specific routine oxygen consumption (MO(2r,m)) were …

Diversity Issues In Gilbert, Arizona: Effectiveness Of Human Relations Commission For Resolving Human Rights Violations, Penny L. Willrich, Pamela M. Smith
Penny Willrich
In response to unwelcome, unattractive media attention and citizen political pressure, Mayor Cynthia Dunham of Gilbert, Arizona appointed 36 citizens to the Diversity Task Force in September 2000. Its purpose was to make recommendations to the town Council on issues of diversity. The town had been plagued for a number of years with incidents of violence, white supremacist gang intimidations and various other acts of discrimination. The stigma of a prejudiced community led to a negative perception that many wanted to correct. The Task Force recommended the creation of a human relations commission and identified eight critical social issues facing …

Once More Into The Bramble Bush: Duty, Causal Contribution, And The Extent Of Legal Responsibility, In Symposium, The John W. Wade Conference On The Third Restatement Of Torts, Richard W. Wright
Richard W. Wright
Courts, lawyers, law students, and academics continue to confuse the empirical issue of causal contribution with the distinct normative issues of tortious conduct and legal injury, which precede and frame the causal-contribution inquiry, and the normative issue of the extent of legal responsibility for tortiously caused consequences, which follows the causal-contribution inquiry. In a number of prior articles, I have tried to distinguish and clarify these various issues, which arise not only in tort law, but also in much the same form in criminal law and many other areas of the law. I have focused primarily on distinguishing and clarifying …

Creating An Instant Messaging Reference System, Jody C. Fagan, Michele Calloway
Jody C Fagan
Libraries are expanding digital references services to include chat and instant messaging. Various companies have developed systems for purchase that meet this need without requiring users to download new software or learn a new skill. These systems share many features in common, including transcript storage, sending URLs, and pushing Web pages. Several librarians at an Association of Research Libraries academic library wished to test instant messaging reference with the ability to control and experiment with different implementations of these features. This article describes the features of instant messaging reference systems and the in-house development of a system that incorporates them.
As Long As You Think You're White..., Shawna Hanel
As Long As You Think You're White..., Shawna Hanel
Shawna Hanel
This body of work encourages white people to recognize that their histories, perspectives, and experiences are not those of humanity, but rather those of white humanity; while simultaneously exposing the falsity of inherent whiteness. In other words, the exhibit, paper and web site provide a space for white people to perceive their whiteness in the contexts of socialization, material culture, and economic location; and then to begin to disavow it within their attitudes, behaviors, and identities. Recognizing and disavowing whiteness concurrently may appear contradictory. Both are strategies necessary for the creation of white identities capable of acknowledging the gross historical …

Finiteness Notions In Fuzzy Sets, Lawrence Stout
Finiteness Notions In Fuzzy Sets, Lawrence Stout
Lawrence N. Stout
Finite sets are one of the most fundamental mathematical structures. In the absence of the axiom of choice there are many different inequivalent definitions of finite even in classical logic. When we allow incomplete existence as in fuzzy sets the situation gets even more complicated. This paper gives nine distinct definitions of finite in a fuzzy context together with examples showing how the properties of the underlying lattice of truth values impact the meanings of finite.

Not A Spike Lee Joint? Issues In The Authorship Of Motion Pictures Under U.S. Copyright Law, Jay Dougherty
Jay Dougherty
Motion pictures are highly collaborative works. This article reviews fundamental concepts of authorship and joint authorship under copyright law, discusses the numerous creative contributions made to a motion picture, and analyzes what exactly should be protectable authorship in the motion picture context, including with respect to actors' performances. It also briefly considers international law of film authorship, and recommends a legal approach to problems of authorship in motion pictures.
