Platonic And Attic Laws On Slavery, Wendy Gallagher Aug 2015

Platonic And Attic Laws On Slavery, Wendy Gallagher

The Compass

Plato called them ἀνδπάποδα (human-footed stock) and Aristotle said they were δουλοπρεπής απὀ τη φύση (servile by nature), but most slaves (δουλεἰα) were once free men and women that quickly found themselvesservants in a Greek democracy. Those that served as slaves were often repaying a debt, on the losing side of a war, or considered a slave by birth. In antiquity Athens was a city focused on knowledge and philosophy, yet they found slavery to be an acceptable institution defended by the philosophers themselves. Those that challenged slavery argued more for the unnatural aspects of the master/slave dynamic rather than …

Restorative Justice As A Strong Approach In Mediating Conflicts, Danielle Diverde Aug 2015

Restorative Justice As A Strong Approach In Mediating Conflicts, Danielle Diverde

The Compass

Mediation is a tactic that has been used in conflict resolution for a long time. These conflicts can exist incountries, in communities, or even within oneself. The main idea is to know not only that these types of conflicts exist, but more importantly, that they are all related to one another. The process of understanding plays a key role in solving conflicts, as opposed to the many circumstances where compromise is made with a gun pressed to one’s head or a treaty shoved down one’s throat. The feeling of interconnectedness is important so we canacknowledge that although we all come …

There Is Much To Learn From War Memoirs: Dissecting With The Old Breed As A Historical Source, Patrick Bigley Aug 2015

There Is Much To Learn From War Memoirs: Dissecting With The Old Breed As A Historical Source, Patrick Bigley

The Compass

With the Old Breed by Eugene B. Sledge is a war memoir of the Second World War; its personal account of war should be used as a reliable historical source. Typically, military memoirs have been seen as capricious sources of history because of the emotion, trauma, and personal affections that soldiers take from a battlefield. Sledge describes these attachments to battle and the experience of combat during the conflicts of Peleliu and Okinawa. He describes the actuality of war and how it wears on a soldier’s spirit, mind, and body. This allows the reader to personalize the war experience. The …

Narrative Rising, Rachel M. Bellwoar Aug 2015

Narrative Rising, Rachel M. Bellwoar

The Compass

In recent years television has become infamous for making the likes of Snooki famous. At the same time, the late twentieth century onwards has been one of television’s brightest stretches, an ongoing era of narrative that consists of more than arguing about a show’s romantic leads, chuckling at stereotypes played for laughs on sitcoms, and listening in awe to a wise, loner detective solve his case in the final ten minutes. All of a sudden, viewers have to remember what happens from week to week, look up charts online to keep track of characters and their allegiances, feel compelled to …

‘She Lived Happily For Seven Years’: How Official Corruption In China May Provide Lessons For America, Lucy Jimenez Aug 2015

‘She Lived Happily For Seven Years’: How Official Corruption In China May Provide Lessons For America, Lucy Jimenez

The Compass

China no longer tries to conceal its treatment of political dissidents. In early 2011, the Communist regimedecided once again to crack down on those who dared to protest government behavior. Officials had numerous human rights activists arrested or detained without due process, in an effort to prevent them from criticizing the government any further. Between February and April 2011, when “anonymous calls for ‘jasmine rallies’ in China began circulating on the internet,” 26 people were arrested for inciting subversion of state power, 30 disappeared altogether, and 200 were detained with their movements completely restricted.

“Is that a bird?” the old man asks me, inching closer to the cage on my lap.

“It’s a rat,” I tell him.

“What kind of rat?”

“Albino.”

Overview Of The Role Of Duplex Ultrasound For Treatment And Surveillance Of Peripheral Arterial Disease, John H. Fish Iii, Peter Klein-Weigel, Gustav Fraedrich Aug 2015

Overview Of The Role Of Duplex Ultrasound For Treatment And Surveillance Of Peripheral Arterial Disease, John H. Fish Iii, Peter Klein-Weigel, Gustav Fraedrich

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Imaging strategies for preinterventional planning in symptomatic peripheral artery disease have employed various modalities ranging from duplex ultrasound to noninvasive angiography with computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MRA). These methods have classically been compared to the gold standard of digital subtraction angiography and are reviewed here in detail through the work of relevant published studies and meta-analyses between 1996 and 2014. In particular, we focus on the diagnostic performance, reproducibility and cost-effectiveness of these aforementioned modalities with respect to mapping the lower extremity arterial tree for planning vascular intervention and surveillance. The data presented suggests comparable sensitivity and specificity …

Novel Oral Anticoagulants For Stroke Prophylaxis And Venous Thromboembolism Prevention And Treatment, Laith G. Alsayegh

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are becoming popular management options for stroke prophylaxis in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation as well as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism treatment and prophylaxis. NOACs have similar efficacy to warfarin along with noninferior safety profiles. Patient comorbidities, size, renal and hepatic function, and concomitant drug regimen play a role in which NOAC a physician may choose.

Type Ii Endoleak Following Endovascular Repair Of Infrarenal Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: Innovative Transgraft Approach To Contemporary Management, M. Fuad Jan, Mark W. Mewissen

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Elective endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is the first-line therapeutic option for patients with infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm. However, endoleaks –– persistent blood flow outside the lumen of the stent graft (or endograft) but within the aneurysm sac or adjacent vascular segment being treated by the graft –– continue to be a persistent problem in the post-EVAR setting. The type II endoleak is the most common of these and can be a demanding challenge to address by standard endovascular techniques. Currently, two prominent endovascular techniques exist for the management of type II endoleaks: direct translumbar embolization and transarterial embolization. Both of …

Use Of Coronary Techniques In Celiac And Hepatic Artery Stenting In Post-Hepatic Transplant Patients, Harpreet Parmar, Ryan Beard, Mark W. Mewissen, Armaan Shaikh, Tanvir Bajwa

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Hepatic artery stenosis (HAS) remains a rare but serious complication after liver transplantation. While invasive surgical techniques were needed for HAS treatment in the past, recently endovascular techniques, including hepatic artery stenting, have been proven to be a safe and effective treatment. The present work focused on a review of the recent literature regarding HAS as well as recent cases demonstrating the various presentations of HAS and the variety of approaches to endovascular intervention. Our single-center experience has shown endovascular treatment of HAS to be safe and effective, including the two specific cases discussed here. While further research is needed, …

New Paradigms In The Treatment Of Acute Complicated And Uncomplicated Type B Aortic Dissection, Eric S. Weiss

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

The treatment of acute type B aortic dissection is a rapidly evolving field, due in a large part to the advent of thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). This review will summarize the current literature on the management of both complicated and uncomplicated type B dissections, with special attention paid to emerging evidence supporting earlier aggressive treatment.

Clinical Outcomes After Drug-Eluting Stents Versus Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery In High Surgical Risk Patients With Left Main Or Three-Vessel Coronary Artery Disease, Tonga Nfor, Kambiz Shetabi, Wael Hassan, Quinta Nfor, Jayant Khitha, Anjan Gupta, Tanvir Bajwa, Suhail Allaqaband

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Purpose

Previous studies comparing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) in patients with unprotected left main or three-vessel coronary artery disease (LM-3VD) have excluded patients at high surgical risk. We compared clinical outcomes after PCI with drug-eluting stents to CABG in high surgical risk patients with LM-3VD.

Methods

Patients with symptomatic LM-3VD who had Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS)-predicted operative mortality >5% and were undergoing either PCI with drug-eluting stents or CABG at a tertiary care center from January 2009 to December 2010 were enrolled in this nonrandomized prospective study.

Results

Mean STS score was …

The Nebulous, Essential Dimensions In Effective University Teaching: The Ethic Of Care And Relational Acumen, Donald E. Scott Aug 2015

The Nebulous, Essential Dimensions In Effective University Teaching: The Ethic Of Care And Relational Acumen, Donald E. Scott

Journal of University Teaching & Learning Practice

This paper examines the interrelationships between teaching beliefs and approaches, instructional design, relationships with students, and academics’ and students’ perceptions of effective teaching and learning. Mixed methodology was utilised and included interviews with academics and students, and questionnaires, inventories, and learning journals. As anticipated educationally optimal instructional design was appreciated by academics and students, however, it was not the most significant aspect in influencing students’ perceptions of ‘good’ or effective teaching. Differences were found between two teaching academics’ beliefs about students and these translated into varied approaches to teaching, interactions with students, and different capacities to establish positive classroom environments …

Surveys showed that first year students gained confidence, were less intimidated and empowered with revision and examination techniques. The SSTs gained valuable insights, tutoring experience and an evidence base useful to their career paths. Discussion …

Innovative Elearning: Technology Shaping Contemporary Problem Based Learning: A Cross-Case Analysis, Greg Blackburn Aug 2015

Innovative Elearning: Technology Shaping Contemporary Problem Based Learning: A Cross-Case Analysis, Greg Blackburn

Journal of University Teaching & Learning Practice

Preparing students to be critical thinkers and effective communicators is essential in today’s multinational and technologically sophisticated environment. New electronic technologies provide opportunities for creating learning environments that extend the possibilities of ‘old’ but still essential technologies: books, blackboards, and linear, one-way communication media. Such technologies contribute to engagement and meaningful learning in the higher education sector. Greater understanding in educational psychology and the effectiveness of educational interventions has motivated the development of various student-centred pedagogies (e.g. Problem-Based Learning (PBL)) addressing perceived shortcomings of traditional didactic instruction. PBL as a pedagogy promotes meaningful learning due largely to its power to …

Taking Risks With Their Hearts: Risk And Emotion In Innovative Forms Of Assessment, Tania Leiman, Elizabeth Abery, Eileen M. Willis Aug 2015

Taking Risks With Their Hearts: Risk And Emotion In Innovative Forms Of Assessment, Tania Leiman, Elizabeth Abery, Eileen M. Willis

Journal of University Teaching & Learning Practice

Research involving student and tutor responses to a ‘pedagogy of the heart’ approach in a first year university health science topic revealed anxiety, insecurity and perceptions of unpredictability in relation to an innovative arts-based assignment designed to elicit and assess experiential or imaginal knowledge. Using the lens of contemporary theories of risk, and explicitly considering the role of emotion in assessment, this paper identifies both the effectiveness of and challenges encountered in this form of assessment. It also explores the relationships between risk and emotion, and between risk and assessment, particularly for young people in the higher education context. By …

This paper describes a study aimed at assessing the ability of report templates to help students learn key concepts during undergraduate laboratory classes. The report templates were designed so that a set of assessment questions led the students through the logical steps required to perform the laboratory exercise and to calculate the required quantitative results. Additional questions probed the students’ understanding of the key concepts covered.

The study assessed the efficacy of the report templates in achieving these goals over a 3 year period via the use of a questionnaire, laboratory marks and marks awarded for examination questions that tested …

Measuring Self-Directed Learning: A Diagnostic Tool For Adult Learners, Henry Khiat Aug 2015

Measuring Self-Directed Learning: A Diagnostic Tool For Adult Learners, Henry Khiat

Journal of University Teaching & Learning Practice

Self-directed learning is an important form of adult learning (Caffarella, 1993; Knowles, 1975; Knowles, Holton & Swanson, 2005; Merriam, 2001; Merriam & Caffarella, 1999). The strategies of self-directed learning allow adult learners to cope better with their studies while fulfilling family, work and other commitments. This study conceptualised and validated a learning diagnostic test in the context of SIM University (UniSIM), an adult learning institution, in Singapore. The learning diagnostic tool allows the students to identify their strengths and weaknesses in areas of self-directed learning. The study employed a survey research methodology. 1,960 students responded to the survey, and the …
