Life As A Civil Rights Lawyer In The San Francisco Bay Area, John L. Burris
Life As A Civil Rights Lawyer In The San Francisco Bay Area, John L. Burris
Golden Gate University Law Review
As a civil rights lawyer for almost 40 years, I have represented over 1,000 victims of police misconduct, thousands in class action employment and toxic tort cases, defendants in many serious criminal cases, and an array of high-profile public figures and professional athletes. During the course of this article, I will write about a selection of cases that are most meaningful and impactful to me. This article also addresses the development of my high-profile status related to my involvement with cases of public interest.
The Office Of The City Attorney Of San Francisco, Louise Renne
The Office Of The City Attorney Of San Francisco, Louise Renne
Golden Gate University Law Review
The San Francisco City Attorney’s Office serves the Mayor, Board of Supervisors, and other elected officials as well as the approximately 100 departments, boards, commissions, and offices that comprise the City and County of San Francisco’s government. In many ways, the office is unique among city attorney offices, both because of the extraordinary scope of activities performed by the City and County of San Francisco’s government, and the scope of the City Attorney’s Office activities within that structure. At the outset, it is important to note that the San Francisco City Attorney is elected — comparatively unusual among cities. All …

Golden Gate University School Of Law: A Bridge To The Profession In The Heart Of San Francisco, Rachel A. Van Cleave
Golden Gate University School Of Law: A Bridge To The Profession In The Heart Of San Francisco, Rachel A. Van Cleave
Golden Gate University Law Review
An over 115-year San Francisco institution devoted to opening legal education and the profession to people of diverse backgrounds and experiences, Golden Gate University School of Law (GGU Law) has been a cornerstone of the Bay Area legal community. GGU Law’s mission, graduates, and academic leaders have played an integral role to the fabric of the San Francisco Bay Area legal community and that has shaped a progressive use of the law that seeks to protect the rights of those who otherwise lack a strong political or legal voice. These contributions continue to reverberate throughout California and beyond. This essay …

High Intimate Partner Violence Rates Among Latinas In Bushwick: A Literature Review, Daisy Lopez
High Intimate Partner Violence Rates Among Latinas In Bushwick: A Literature Review, Daisy Lopez
21st Century Social Justice
Although intimate violence partner rates have declined over the past decade, this health and social problem remains serious and significant. Latinas are especially impacted, as they face greater negative outcomes from intimate partner violence experiences. Research increasingly highlights the need to incorporate the unique narratives of racial and ethnic populations into education and intervention measures. Unfortunately, current strategies often neglect the social and cultural context of this population group. The influence of this vulnerability is especially evident in locations experiencing increasing violence rates such as Bushwick in northern Brooklyn of New York City. The present paper examines these vulnerabilities and …
Restorative Justice: A Look At Victim Offender Mediation Programs, Katie L. Moran
Restorative Justice: A Look At Victim Offender Mediation Programs, Katie L. Moran
21st Century Social Justice
This report conceptualizes the effectiveness and benefits of utilizing the restorative justice model of Victim Offender Mediation (VOM) within the criminal and juvenile justice systems to serve the rights of victims, offenders, and society more justly. Victim Offender Mediation is discussed as a possible alternative justice model which reframes the victim-offender relationship to foster and respect the dignity and worth of each participant. This restorative justice model combats victims’ feelings of helplessness by giving them back their voice, while having the potential to specifically offer relief to those secondarily victimized by the legal system in cases of simple rape. Offenders …
Book Review: Saving Capitalism: For The Many, Not The Few, Scott C. Taylor
Book Review: Saving Capitalism: For The Many, Not The Few, Scott C. Taylor
21st Century Social Justice
In his most recent book, Saving Capitalism: For the Many, Not the Few, economist and former Secretary of Labor, Robert Reich enters the debate on our failing American economy by disrupting the prevailing view that the free market is natural. Contesting the very notion of deregulation, Reich describes how governments create markets. In this book review, I emphasize how Reich’s book can give perspective to social workers’ understanding of the markets in which they work in. Advocating for the same human rights and social justice outlined in the social worker’s Code of Ethics, Reich provides illuminating criticism of our …

A Roundtable On Cross-Sector Collaboration And Resource Alignment For Health Equity: Meeting Summary, Onyemaechi Nweke
A Roundtable On Cross-Sector Collaboration And Resource Alignment For Health Equity: Meeting Summary, Onyemaechi Nweke
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Cross-sector collaboration is a highly recommended strategy to eliminate health inequities nationally and globally. In the federal sector, it is evolving into an important approach for solving complex social problems, as evidenced by its steady proliferation the past few decades. Despite the increased adoption of cross-sector collaboration, it is still not a default strategy or preeminent option for managing complex social problems. In September 2015, the Federal Interagency Health Equity Team (FIHET) hosted a Roundtable event to discuss opportunities and strategies to foster widespread adoption of cross-sector collaboration and resource alignment. The Roundtable featured several expert panelists and participants from …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Background: Chronic diseases are an important contributor to morbidity and mortality among racial/ethnic minority, low-income, and other under-resourced populations. Given that state health departments (and their chronic disease programs) play a significant role in providing population and preventive health services, their capacity to promote health equity is an important consideration in national efforts to address chronic diseases. The purpose of this study was to examine capacity needs of state chronic disease programs with respect to promoting health equity.
Methods: In 2015, the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) conducted a survey of its members that work within a …
Achieving Health Equity For Indian Country, Jamie Ishcomer
Achieving Health Equity For Indian Country, Jamie Ishcomer
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
The essence of health equity is giving resources where they are needed most. American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) continue to have the worst health outcomes, live in some of the most desperate of conditions, and lack access to even basic amenities that many other Americans could not survive without. Although Tribes have been plagued with social, economic and political injustice for centuries, there is an opportunity to put a stop to the systematic oppression and build up the first peoples of this country. A partnership between the National Indian Health Board (NIHB) and the National Partnership for Action to …

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) describes the strategies and infrastructure it has developed to fund its placed-based initiatives to address the social determinants of health to eliminate health disparities. Using a data driven and community-led approach, RIDOH funded 10 local collaboratives, each with its own, geographically-defined “Health Equity Zone,” or “HEZ,” and, to support the collaboratives, created a new “Health Equity Institute,” a “HEZ Team” of 9 seasoned project managers, and direct lines of communications between these assets and the Office of the Director of Health.

Eliminating health disparities is a priority across national agenda and initiatives such as the National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparities (NPA), the National Prevention Strategy, and Healthy People 2020. To advance this priority under the NPA, the Federal Interagency Health Equity Team (FIHET), which is an NPA federal cross-sector and collaborative platform, initiated a voluntary pilot “health equity mapping” exercise in 2014. This exercise served as a strategy to clarify the strategic alignment between participant federal partner program missions, goals, and activities, and the goal to end health disparities and promote health equity. The mapping process included an …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
In April 2011, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) launched the National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparities (NPA) to increase the effectiveness of efforts to eliminate health disparities by coordinating partners, leaders, and stakeholders committed to action. At its core, the NPA is an experiment in collaboration that relies heavily on those on the front line who are actively engaged in minority health work at multiple levels. It gives them the responsibility of identifying and helping to define core actions, new approaches, and new partnerships that ultimately will help to …

The optimal approach to eliminating health inequities is through evidence-based interventions. In 2009, the non-federal Community Preventive Services Task Force launched a series of systematic reviews of interventions to promote health equity. Topics to be considered include education, employment, housing, and transportation. Thus far, reviews have focused on educational interventions: center-based early childhood education, full-day kindergarten programs, out-of-school time academic programs, high school completion programs, and school-based health centers. These reviews demonstrate the benefits of diverse educational interventions in advancing health equity. Here, we summarize the strategy of Community Guide health equity reviews, first findings and challenges.

Improving Access And Utilization Of Data To Support Research And Programs Intended To Eliminate Disparities And Promote Health Equity, Rosaly Correa-De-Araujo
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Numerous Federal initiatives are addressing health and health care disparities. The ultimate goal is to achieve “a nation free of disparities in health and health care.” Social determinants of health remain mostly responsible for health/health care disparities among population groups within and between countries. In the United States, there is little evidence that disparities associated with such determinants are decreasing, with only 10% of those associated with race/ethnicity and income having demonstrated improvement in recent years. A variety of data sources are available from the Federal and private sectors to support research on disparities, but no single national survey seems …

International Journal of Speleology
Caves are stable environments that favour the development of several microorganisms. The aspergilli represent a large number of species isolated from caves including strains capable of causing serious invasive opportunistic infections in humans. Considering that caves may harbour resistant strains to many antibiotics, investigation on the response of opportunistic aspergilli, isolated from pristine and tourist caves to antifungal agents and the mechanisms involved in resistance might be clinically relevant. A total of 32 strains of the species Aspergillus candidus, A. flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, A. tamarii, and A. terreus were isolated from caves in …

The Impact Of Extracurricular Activities In Egyptian Colleges On The Job Market, Niyra Tawfik Elklisy
The Undergraduate Research Journal
The research discussed the impact of extracurricular activities in Egyptian colleges on the job market. Two major questions in this research were: is there a difference between the extracurricular activities in the Egyptian private universities and public ones? Does it make a difference to be engaged in extracurricular activities in Egyptian public or private universities on employment? Forty-eight Egyptian graduates took part in an online survey for a quantitative research to examine their involvement in these activities and how these activities reflected on their employment. At the end of the data gathering process, interesting findings resulted from the online survey. …
Civil Society And State Fragility In Angola, Salma Essam El Refaei
Civil Society And State Fragility In Angola, Salma Essam El Refaei
The Undergraduate Research Journal
State fragility is becoming increasingly alarming as an epidemic in our world today. It breeds crippling crises and can have irrevocable effects. According to Robert I. Rotberg, fragile states are hubs for both: local and international crimes, human and drug trafficking, terror and human rights violations amongst other problems acting as a social menace to the globe (Rotberg, 2003, p.6). One of the main reasons why fragile states are alarming is that the problems they bring about are rarely contained. They automatically overspill due to the complexity of some of the problems as well as the interdependence of the world’s …
