Comparison Of Helicopter And Ground Interfacility Transport On Time-To-Treatment Of Isolated Open Fractures, Jerry Speight Grimes, Duke Appiah
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Background: Helicopter emergency medical services have become an integral part of trauma systems. When appropriately utilized, helicopter transport can improve the outcomes of trauma patients. The objective of this study was to determine if helicopter transport for interfacility transfers was effective in reducing time-to-treatment for isolated open fractures in the setting of a rural Level I trauma center. The authors hypothesized that helicopter transportation of isolated open fractures would not reduce time to definitive fixation.
Methods: All patients treated with isolated open fractures over a four-year period at a Level I trauma center were identified. In this study, the authors …

Purpose: International medical missions may increase access to medicines and care, but international teams must understand local needs to implement appropriate services. In 2023, a multidisciplinary team from our institution partnered with a nonprofit organization in the barrio of Cienfuegos, Dominican Republic with the goal of strengthening local health services. The primary objective of this study was to identify health-related needs in Cienfuegos from the perspective of community members and local health care workers.
Methods: A qualitative study was conducted as part of a service-learning initiative. After obtaining informed consent, the investigators conducted individual semi-structured interviews facilitated by multi-lingual interpreters. …

Medical Missions, Ethical Considerations And The Future For Healthcare Delivery In Ophthalmology, Robert Medina, Ba
inSIGHT
Beginning hundreds of years ago, priests from Europe embarked on ‘medical missions’ with the goals of delivering care to the body, mind, and soul. Hundreds of years later, members of the United States healthcare system set out on humanitarian medical missions to provide medical assistance to communities in developing countries.1 The concept of providing care internationally as a product of global social responsibility has become engrained in the United States healthcare system, and is popular among providers, trainees, and pre-medical students. In 2023, 21.8% (n = 3264) of matriculating medical students reported participating in international volunteer work, while 7.0% …

The Problem With The Performance Of Alternative Or Military Service Of Ukrainian Adventists In War Conditions, Valentyna Kuryliak Dr
The Problem With The Performance Of Alternative Or Military Service Of Ukrainian Adventists In War Conditions, Valentyna Kuryliak Dr
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article discusses the lack of legal documentation faced by Ukraine in defending its borders and national interests, taking into account its historical experience. Attention is drawn to the issues encountered by Protestant churches, especially, but not exclusively, the Seventh-day Adventist Church. A proposal has been made to utilize the volunteer non-combatant potential of churches, regulating it legislatively without involving the Ukrainian court system. The question of alternative (non-combatant) service during mobilization and in times of war in Ukraine is analyzed. The author argues the necessity of preserving the right to alternative service for church members, which according to the …

The External Sector Of Cuba’S Economy: Performance And Challenges, Paolo Spadoni
The External Sector Of Cuba’S Economy: Performance And Challenges, Paolo Spadoni
FIU Law Review
Amid ongoing economic reforms, Cuba faces its most severe crisis since the 1990s Soviet Union collapse. Transitioning into a service-oriented economy, it grapples with inefficiencies, a feeble production base, and a struggling external sector. Traditionally reliant on sugar, Cuba now depends on international tourism and professional services for hard currency. However, these lack domestic production ties, limiting economic impact. Systemic constraints, a trade deficit, and dependence on imports compound challenges. Fading Venezuelan support, U.S. sanctions, the COVID-19 pandemic, and geopolitical events exacerbate economic woes. This study delves into GDP growth, trade, financial struggles, and external factors, highlighting critical hurdles impeding …

Creating The Cultural “Other”: Ableism, Racism, And Imperialism In The 19th And 20th Centuries, Stephanie Baskin
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
This project argues that disability and physical difference were simultaneously both sensationalized and hidden in the United States and the United Kingdom, while also being overemphasized in non-Western countries, with the intention of evoking either revulsion, a sense of racial superiority, or pity, all of which was used as justification for Western imperialism. In order to make this argument, the project looks at varying attitudes and actions toward the disabled, physically different, and visibly ill in the U.K. and U.S.A., as well as the varying attitudes and actions toward the disabled, physically different, and visibly ill in the broader imperial …
Factors Influencing The Development Of Social Change Involvement, Linda Johanson, Patti P. Urso, Kimberly Priode
Factors Influencing The Development Of Social Change Involvement, Linda Johanson, Patti P. Urso, Kimberly Priode
Journal of Excellence in Nursing and Healthcare Practice
How to cultivate and encourage the motivation to become an agent of positive social change has not been studied to a great degree. For example, what kind of factors influence the development and growth in nurses toward a desire to be involved in changing society for the better? Knowledge of these factors could help educators and nurse leaders provide and encourage those growth opportunities. The purpose of this research was to interview nurses known to be deeply involved in various types of positive social change and discover what factors influenced this development. Three overall themes emerged as influencing factors for …
Integrating Medical Pluralism In Southern Africa: The Case Of The Zion Christian Church’S Healing Motif, Olaotse Obed Gabasiane
Integrating Medical Pluralism In Southern Africa: The Case Of The Zion Christian Church’S Healing Motif, Olaotse Obed Gabasiane
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
The challenges that Western-trained medical missionaries and Christian doctors face is that their African patients, some of whom may be Christians, do consult all the healers in the parallel medical systems freely and almost simultaneously, the result of which may be complications, and possibly mental confusion, due to medications from different sources being taken at the same time without any liaison between doctors and healers.

Anti-Urbanism In Culture And In The Adventist Church: Advocacy And Action For Urban Ministry In The Twentieth Century—Part 2, Jerry R. Chase
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
This article explores the response within the Seventh-day Adventist Church after Ellen G. White’s death to the dual emphases in her writings on the city and rural living. On one hand she strongly encouraged large Adventist institutions and families raising children to locate out of the cities. This was because of the advantages natural surroundings have on physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, and to shield children and young adults from the evils and temptations of the city. While she recognized the evils in the city and God’s impending judgments, she aggressively pushed church leaders to take a more active role …

Rivers Of Change: The Wisdom Of The Rapids Within Transcultural Teacher Education, Jean Kirshner
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
This manuscript describes the ongoing professional development project that involves educators from Belize and the United States. I argue that sustainable change within transnational and transcultural professional development is most effective when it involves Freirean-like dialogue, sharing life stories and sharing lifeworlds. I also explain how intentionally enacting Freirean-like dialogue, sharing life stories, and sharing lifeworlds, led to key changes in the professional identities and practices of all participants including my Belizean colleagues as well as members of Belize Education Project in the United States. Finally, I discuss the effects of changed relationships, identities, and practices on pedagogy and student …

Great (Soft) Power Competition: Us And Chinese Efforts In Global Health Engagement, Michael W. Wissemann
Great (Soft) Power Competition: Us And Chinese Efforts In Global Health Engagement, Michael W. Wissemann
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
Global health engagement, an underutilized strategy rooted in the strengths of soft power persuasion, can lead to more military-to-military cooperation training, help establish relationships that can be relied on when crises develop, stabilize fragile states, and deny violent extremist organizations space for recruiting and operations. Examining Chinese efforts worldwide to curry favor and influence and the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, this article shows health as a medium is a very compelling and advantageous whole-of-government approach to national security policy concerns.
