Effects Of Lead Contamination On Macro-Water Retention And Micro-Structural Evolution Of Loess, Shao-Jie Wen, Wen-Chieh Cheng, Wen-Le Hu

Rock and Soil Mechanics

The physical and chemical reactions between heavy metals in landfill leachate and soil may change the microstructure of soil, then the diffusion and migration of heavy metals and other toxic substances, threaten human health and surrounding environment. In order to investigate the effects of heavy metal contamination on macroscopic water retention and microstructure of loess, the soil-water characteristic curves of Pb-contaminated loess were measured by axial translation technique. Characterization of mesoscopic structure changes was clarified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mercury injection (MIP), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Zeta potential. The results show that the air-entry values of Pb-contaminated loess decrease …

Technical science and innovation

An overview of current developments in biochar application in water and wastewater treatment is given in this article, along with a brief explanation of the sorption mechanisms for removing contaminants and the techniques for biochar preparation. In order to encourage the continued use of biochar in effective water and wastewater treatment, future research directions and environmental concerns about biochar are also presented.

Adsorption Of Heavy Metal Ions By Oil Palm Decanter Cake Activated Carbon, Mohd. Ezreeza Mohamed Yusoff, Juferi Idris, Nahrul Hayawin Zainal, Mohamad Faizal Ibrahim, Suraini Abd-Aziz Aug 2019

Adsorption Of Heavy Metal Ions By Oil Palm Decanter Cake Activated Carbon, Mohd. Ezreeza Mohamed Yusoff, Juferi Idris, Nahrul Hayawin Zainal, Mohamad Faizal Ibrahim, Suraini Abd-Aziz

Makara Journal of Technology

Adsorption processes are widely used for the removal of heavy metals from waste streams. Oil palm decanter cake (OPDC) is used as a bioadsorbent because of its compositional properties for activated carbon production; moreover, it is a readily available raw material produced in palm oil mills and is thus abundant and cheap. In this study, the OPDC was carbonized at 700 °C and activated using steam at 700 °C to produce oil palm decanter cake activated carbon (AC-OPDC). Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to compare the adsorption capacities of the raw OPDC and the AC-OPDC for heavy metals removal. …
