Innovative Climate Pedagogy: Interdisciplinary Approaches To Teaching Climate Change, Jennifer Sweeney Tookes, Lissa M. Leege
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
As a “wicked problem,” climate change requires interdisciplinary understanding and collaboration in order to prepare future leaders to develop solutions. To this end, as an ecologist and an anthropologist at a mid-sized university in the southeastern U.S., we designed a pair of interdisciplinary, research-intensive courses for first-year Honors students with the goal of improving understanding and communicating the urgency of climate change. We employed High Impact Practices (HIPs) and Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) to accomplish learning outcomes during both years of the course. Gains in scientific knowledge and climate change-specific knowledge were assessed with quantitative and qualitative analysis of …

Te Kupenga – Reflecting On The Purposeful Collection, Interpretation, And Stor(Y)Ing Of Māori Women’S Knowledges., Deborah M. Heke
Journal of Indigenous Research
This paper provides a reflection on the methodology – Te Kupenga – after being presented at a number of international Indigenous conferences. It will explore the use of this intersecting methodology as a philosophical and practical approach to gathering, interpreting, and stor(y)ing mātauranga wahine (Māori women’s knowledges). The initial research project utilized this methodology and associated methods to come to understand the ways of being of physically active wāhine Māori and connect them to atua wāhine (feminine deities). The metaphor of the kupenga derives from both the structure and use of an open weave net, often used for fishing or …

Simplicity And The Sermon On The Mount, Falon Opsahl Barton
Simplicity And The Sermon On The Mount, Falon Opsahl Barton
Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry
Jesus lived a life of simplicity in his possessions and his purpose. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus invites his disciples, then and now, into a similar life of simplicity that is fully focused on God alone in order to make whole our relationships with God, ourselves, each other, and creation. This article claims that simplicity is a primary theme of Jesus’ longest discourse, and that Jesus’ simplicity is not self-focused, but rather benefits all humanity and all creation. This article exegetes Matthew 6:25-34 specifically, and draws out some of the theological and missional implications of Jesus's model of …

A School Nurse Perspective on a Positive School Culture: Collaborative Team Effort
Abstract
Promoting a positive school culture is imperative for fostering a conducive learning environment and ensuring the well-being of faculty members. Rusticus, et al.,2023, state that high-quality learning environments are associated with positive outcomes for students at all levels. This paper explores the implementation of wellness areas or rooms within educational institutions to facilitate stress reduction and promote overall faculty wellness. By providing dedicated spaces for relaxation and rejuvenation, schools can enhance faculty satisfaction, productivity, and retention (Jones, et al, 2019). This study investigates the methodology and model …

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics
The aim of the article is to analyze the stability of beta coeffi cients of companies listed in WIG-ESG. There are many studies on the stability of companies’ systematic risk, but the literature and research lack an analysis of the stability of the beta coeffi cient for ESG companies. We examined beta coeffi cients for 57 companies listed in WIG-ESG, established for sets of daily rates of return between September 3, 2019, to June 6, 2022 (period including COVID-19 crisis and asset price infl ation, Russian invasion of Ukraine). We estimate the beta coeffi cient for the whole as a …

The Un Security Council In Conflict: How Does The Protection Of The Environment Related To Armed Conflict Fit Into Its Structural And Inequal Dynamics?, Gabriel Lagrange
The Journal of Social Encounters
Recent conflicts have emphasized the multidirectional linkages between the environment and conflicts and therefore peace and security. As the organ responsible for international peace and security issues, the UN Security Council has the mandate to tackle the environment- conflicts nexus. Although it has delivered several resolutions on a case-by-case basis, the UN Security Council has never included environmental protection through a thematic resolution. Such a resolution is crucial due to the current ecological crisis while the binding nature and implementation capacities of the Council would tangibly improve the current political and legal framework protecting the environment. Yet, obstacles resulting from …

Guns, Bombs, And Pollution: Unraveling The Nexus Between Warfare, Terrorism, And Ecological Devastation In Iraq, Hogr Tarkhani
The Journal of Social Encounters
Iraq's environment has experienced significant pollution and degradation, earning it the dubious distinction of being one of the most polluted and degraded regions globally, according to the Globe Pollution Review. The past three decades of armed conflict have exacted a heavy toll on the country, resulting in widespread human suffering, including countless fatalities, injuries, and a massive displacement of people. Amidst this death and destruction, the ecosystem has also endured severe damage, and its decline carries long-lasting implications.
The environmental crisis in Iraq has been worsened by the presence of extremist groups such as the Islamic State (ISIS) and various …

Braiding Indigenous And Western Knowledge Through Traditional Cultural Camps: Decolonial Learning Conversation Between Indigenous Land-Based And Settler-Of-Color Scholars, Teena Starlight, Ranjan Datta
Journal of Indigenous Research
Traditional cultural camps are distinctive and transformative spaces where Indigenous and Western knowledge systems intersect and exchange. These camps represent experiential programs deeply rooted in Indigenous land-based practices, emphasizing traditional teachings, skills, and connections to community learning and cultural preservation. As crucial grounds for fostering mutual understanding, intercultural dialogue, and revitalizing Indigenous cultures, these camps bring together Indigenous land-based knowledge and practices, community members, and Western researchers. In this collaborative setting, ancestral knowledge, cultural practices, and wisdom are transmitted from one generation to another. Integrating Indigenous and Western knowledge systems within these camps opens avenues for bridging gaps, dispelling stereotypes, …

Remediation For Pfas Contamination: The Role Of Cercla Enforcement In Environmental Justice, Amanda F. Watson
Georgia Law Review
PFAS are a family of manufactured chemicals that are highly persistent in the environment. Most people in the U.S. have been exposed to PFAS, but different groups of people may have higher exposure due to their environments. In recent years, peer-reviewed scientific studies have shown that PFAS are linked to numerous adverse human health effects. As a result, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has taken a variety of actions to address PFAS, including proposing to designate PFOS and PFOA, two chemicals in the PFAS family, as hazardous substances under CERCLA, or Superfund. CERCLA is the primary legal mechanism in …

Missing Middle Housing: Accelerating America’S Transition From Single-Family Zoning, Lena Zeebuyth, Mallory Moore
Missing Middle Housing: Accelerating America’S Transition From Single-Family Zoning, Lena Zeebuyth, Mallory Moore
Natural Resources Journal
As housing unaffordability and climate change impose increasingly greater costs on American cities and towns, there is a growing sense that single-family residential zoning ordinances are partly to blame for these challenges. Many Americans remain unwilling to address these difficulties by welcoming large apartment buildings into their neighborhoods. Fortunately, policies designed to promote “middle housing” development––visually attractive duplexes and townhome projects––tend to be more politically feasible than policies that drive apartment development. Further, such policies do much to improve the affordability and environmental sustainability of residential neighborhoods. This Article describes how promoting greater middle housing development in the United States …

Raising Student Awareness Of Environmental Issues Via Writing Assignments With Differential Equations, Michelle L. Ghrist
CODEE Journal
In this paper, I discuss two environmentally-focused writing assignments that I developed and implemented in recent integral calculus and differential equations courses. These models of carbon storage and PCB’s in a river provide interesting applications of one-compartment mixing problems. The assignments were intended to focus student attention on sustainability concerns while also developing other essential skills. I discuss these assignments and their effect on my students’ technical writing and environmental awareness. Detailed introductory instructions and mostly complete solutions to these assignments appear in the appendices, to include sample student work.

Climate, Clarity, Controversy: A Constitutional, Statutory, And Policy Analysis Of The Sec’S Proposed Climate Disclosure Rules, Astoneia O. Moss
Emory Corporate Governance and Accountability Review
The burgeoning ESG movement has heightened investors’ interest in how companies steward the environment in which they operate; manage their human capital; and implement strategies to effectively manage and fulfill the desires of stakeholders. As a result, the SEC has sought to implement a mandatory climate-related disclosure regime to provide investors with public companies’ climate-related data to assist in the investment decision-making process. The proposed climate-related disclosure rule has faced criticism from businesses, politicians, and legal scholars on constitutional, statutory, and policy grounds. This Comment concludes that based on the statutory language of the Securities Act of 1933 and Securities …
Pacific Islands And The U.S. Military: The Legal Borderlands Of The Environmental Movement, Sonia Lei
Pacific Islands And The U.S. Military: The Legal Borderlands Of The Environmental Movement, Sonia Lei
Seattle University Law Review
Climate change remains an urgent, ongoing global issue that requires critical examination of institutional polluters. This includes the world’s largest institutional consumer of petroleum: the United States military. The Department of Defense (DoD) is a massive institution with little oversight, a carbon footprint spanning the globe, a budget greater than the next ten largest nations combined, and overly generous exemptions to environmental regulations and carbon reduction targets. This Comment examines how this lack of accountability and oversight plays out in the context of three Pacific islands that have hosted U.S. military bases for decades. By considering the environmental impact of …
