Graduate Medical Education Research Journal

Background: To assess when residents become proficient in performing flexible nasolaryngoscopy (FNL) in the pediatric population.

Objective: To objectively evaluate the quality of FNL by year of residency training.

Methods: Ninety-five pediatric FNL’s were performed by otolaryngology residents and pediatric otolaryngology fellows (postgraduate year [PGY] 1 – 6). Three pediatric otolaryngologists rated the FNL videos (anonymized and without sound) using the Modified Cormack-Lehane scoring system (MCLS). Data analysis was performed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer adjustment.

Results: Overall, there was a significant difference in the quality of the FNL based on the year of training (p

Pediatric Providers’ Experiences Assessing Young Children’S Emotions And Behaviors, Vaibhavi Venkataramanan, Akira Isaac B.S., Sara Bufferd Ph.D. Sep 2023

Pediatric Providers’ Experiences Assessing Young Children’S Emotions And Behaviors, Vaibhavi Venkataramanan, Akira Isaac B.S., Sara Bufferd Ph.D.

The Cardinal Edge

Introduction: Preschool-aged children experience anxiety and mood-related emotions (e.g., irritability, fears) and behaviors (e.g., tantrums) that are developmentally normative, but can overlap with psychopathology, making assessment challenging (Bufferd et al.,2016). Most children see pediatric medical providers annually, and providers can evaluate them. However, providers face challenges like limited training and time (Bean et al.,2000;Heneghan et al.,2008). Accurate and early identification of emotional and behavioral difficulties is critical to support young children’s mental health and prevent worsening problems.

Methods: Participants included N=22 pediatricians who see 3-5-year-old children in their practice. Pediatricians completed an online survey about their experiences assessing young …

Background: Pediatric rehabilitation units offer unique challenges due to complex rehabilitation needs of children based on their age group and diagnosis. Length of stay (LOS) is an indirect measure of hospital cost and efficiency of a clinical service and it is important to determine the factors affecting LOS in hospitalized children undergoing inpatient rehabilitation. Methods: Record of 350 children (males: 222, female: 128) who underwent inpatient pediatric rehabilitation program at King Fahad Medical City, Riyadh Saudi Arabia during 2011 to 2018 were reviewed. Diagnoses were categorized into cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, non-traumatic brain injury and others. …

How Did That Get There? A Case Series Of Adolescent Foreign Bodies, Justin Ian Hanson, Paul Bomar, Sarah Kleist, Denver Rogalla, Lori Crihfield, Scott Gutovitz

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Pediatric foreign bodies (FBs) come in many shapes and sizes, and the method by which they enter the body can greatly impact the level of acuity at presentation. Most FBs in children are found in those younger than 5 years old, but the following 3 cases were found in adolescent patients.

Case Presentation

We report on 3 adolescent patients who presented to a single community-based emergency department with the chief complaint of abdominal pain and were found to have complications of abdominal FBs. If undiagnosed, the initial indolent courses of FBs can lead to serious complications, as shown in …

Covid-19 Disease Characterization And Outcomes Comparison In Pediatrics, Rachel Rowland, Abigail Schauble, Brendon Cornett

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Background

It has been reported that children experience less severe COVID-19 symptoms than adults; however, the literature that supports this idea is evolving. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively characterize hospitalized COVID-19-positive pediatric patients with a focus on the assessment of risk factors for poorer outcomes, mortality, and evaluation of interventions utilized and associated clinical outcomes.

Methods

We conducted a multi-center retrospective chart review of patients 18 years old or younger who were COVID-19 positive and admitted to any US HCA Healthcare Pediatric service line between January 1, 2020, and November 30, 2020. We identified 6081 children across …

This cross-sectional study included 60 children divided equally in two groups. The patient group was previously diagnosed with beta-thalassemia major (β-TM), and the control group was healthy subjects who were age, sex, and socioeconomically matched with the patient group. Both groups were evaluated regarding complete …

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objectives

The aim was to evaluate the incidence of hearing impairment among neonates in a rural setup and detect permanent hearing impairment of moderate to severe degree in the frequency range important for speech recognition in neonates, at earliest possible time and help to provide appropriate intervention (medical/surgical/rehabilitation) following the detection of a permanent hearing impairment.

Background

Deafness is the most common curable childhood handicap. It is a well-recognized fact that unidentified hearing impairment can adversely affect optimal speech and language development and therefore academic, social, and emotional development. Universal neonatal hearing screening programs have been implemented in many developed …

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic caused a deleterious impact on global health. School-aged children were significantly impacted by the pandemic. These impacts may be attributed to the fact that this age group is at a vulnerable developmental stage and is susceptible to profound effects. We conducted a thorough literature review using PubMed, Medline, and Science Direct electronic database searches between 2020-2022. We retrieved 757 studies, 25 of which were included in our review. We considered the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the physical and mental health of school-aged children (5-18 years), and the results were analyzed and included in our …

Everything I Needed To Know To Be A Pediatric Emergency Room Doctor, I Learned As A Waitress, Sarah Gard Lazarus

Patient Experience Journal

When I began my career as a pediatric emergency medicine physician, I believed I was prepared to take on any medical emergency. However, I was not prepared to provide a good patient family experience. Throughout my years of training, I was not taught productive ways of interacting with patients and was unaware of how impactful the patient family experience would be. Negative patient family experience scores affected my interactions with patients, my shared decision making and my ability to provide quality care. After working to improve my scores, I focused on skills I obtained in a non-medical setting, as a …

Pediatric faculty (n = 23) underwent training and were paired with trainees outside their field of interest. Trainees were surveyed at the beginning and end of the program to assess burnout and well-being, and key skills necessary to achieve well-being.

Results: Thirty-one …

Evaluation Of Seroprevalence Of Dengue Virus Infection Among Patients Visiting A Tertiary-Care Center In Indore, Mahmood D. Al-Mendalawi

Menoufia Medical Journal

I refer to the interesting study by Bajpai et al. [1] published in October–December 2021 issue of the Menoufia Medical Journal. Utilizing serology, Bajpai et al. [1] found that 18.4% of the patients admitted to a tertiary‑care center located in Central India were found to be seropositive for dengue disease (DD). We believe that the following methodological limitation related to the serology used in the study could bring into question the rightness of the study results. The impact of that limitation could be explained in dual aspects. On one hand, the laboratory detection of DD is based on serology and …

There was no significant difference between serum copeptin levels concerning the type of hyponatremia according to volume status, plasma tonicity, or even syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion diagnosis (P = 0.69, 0.20, and 0.62, respectively). There was no …
