A Path Forward To #Niunamenos Based On An Intersectional Analysis Of Laws Criminalizing Femicide/Feminicide In Latin America, Melissa Padilla
A Path Forward To #Niunamenos Based On An Intersectional Analysis Of Laws Criminalizing Femicide/Feminicide In Latin America, Melissa Padilla
San Diego International Law Journal
Since 2007, eighteen Latin American countries have enacted laws that criminalize femicide/feminicide in an effort to address gender-based murders in the region and to uphold their obligations under international human rights law. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and its systemic lingering effects exacerbated the existent dangerous levels of gender-based violence in the region, resulting in an increase in gender-based murders. To address these murders, between 2020 and 2021, a quarter of the eighteen Latin American countries that criminalized femicide/feminicide have implemented or are in the process of implementing reforms to their laws criminalizing femicide/feminicide. Given this new trend to address the …

Women, Bodies, And Medicine: The Tradition Of Drinking Jamu (Herbal Medicine) Among Indonesian Transmigrant Women, Theresia Pratiwi Elingsetyo Sanubari, Rosiana Eva Rayanti, Priskilla Sindi Arindita
Journal of International Women's Studies
Jamu (traditional herbal medicine of Indonesia) emerges from Javanese culture that is passed down through generations. The tradition was brought by Javanese transmigrants in Lampung, Indonesia. Social interaction between transmigrants and locals led to the cultural assimilation of Javanese culture within local culture. The combination of two cultures brings a different meaning to Jamu consumption among the transmigrants. This study aims to explore the significance of traditional medical practices in transmigrant communities. This research uses a descriptive, qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Participants were three first-generation transmigrant, elderly women, who consume herbal medicine and live in Dwi Mulyo Village, …

Sacred Sex Or Purely Prostitution? Women’S Health During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Roro Kembang Sore Tomb, Tulungagung, East Java, Indonesia, Diah Ariani Arimbi, Gesang Manggala Nugraha Putra, Nurul Fitri Hapsari
Journal of International Women's Studies
The practice of seeking pesugihan (a Javanese term for fortune or wealth, usually achieved by visiting a sacred burial ground of a historic prominent figure or mythical beings) through free-sex rituals is one of the factors that has increased the prevalence of HIV and AIDS, especially in the Tulungagung region of East Java, Indonesia. Often under the guise of tradition, this practice is maintained without proper supervision from governing agencies. To assess this problem, this study focuses on mapping the origin and distribution of free-sex myths in the pesugihan ritual, especially at the burial site of Nyi Roro Kembang Sore, …

Data was collected through observation methods, documentation, and library research. The results show that the …
How Can You Call Her A Woman? Male Soldiers’ Views On Women In The Drc Armed Forces, Dostin Lakika, Ingrid Palmary
How Can You Call Her A Woman? Male Soldiers’ Views On Women In The Drc Armed Forces, Dostin Lakika, Ingrid Palmary
Peace and Conflict Studies
There has been a longstanding body of literature on women in the armed forces at least since the 1970s (Segal, 1999). This literature varies considerably in its approach, from feminist work that reflects on the forms of masculinity produced through military and militarization, to work that considers women’s role in the army and attitudes towards women in the army. Furthermore, policy efforts to increase women’s participation in the army (such as UN Security Council Resolution 1325) have explicitly called for the inclusion of women in peace and security efforts. In this paper, we contribute to this literature by assessing how …
Exploring The Experiences Of Women On Muslim Pilgrimage: A Study Of Hazaratbal Shrine In Kashmir, Ab Qayoom Shah, Professor Aneesa Shafi
Exploring The Experiences Of Women On Muslim Pilgrimage: A Study Of Hazaratbal Shrine In Kashmir, Ab Qayoom Shah, Professor Aneesa Shafi
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The aim of this study is to explore the experiences of women at Hazaratbal shrine in Kashmir also known as Madinut-ul-Sani (second Madina). In spite of growing interest of scholars in sacred tourism research, little efforts are made to examine female perception of holy shrine experiences. The authors collected data through interviews and participant observation of female pilgrims/visitors, at the shrine. The theoretical base of the study is the phenomenological work of Schultz. After the completion of analysis, five main categories of perceptions appeared which attract women visitors to Hazaratbal shrine namely prayer and worship, thanksgiving, healing, learning and heritage.
Women In The Marijuana Industry, Karen August
Women In The Marijuana Industry, Karen August
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
This paper explores the experiences of women involved with rural marijuana production in Northern California. Using grounded theory analysis, my research explores patterns and trends in the daily lives of women participants in the growing community. Multiple dimensions are explored, highlighting divisions of labor, gender, social networking, and elements of power and class. My research aims to provide a rich and highly textured portrait of various women as they operate from different positions within a legally ambiguous economy. Though the federal government continues to judge marijuana cultivation and distribution to be illegal, the marijuana industry thrives in the progressively tolerant …

St-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction In North African Women: Results From A Twenty-Year Experience., Ikram Chamtouri, Rania Souissi, Nesrine Amdouni, Walid Jomaa, Wajih Abdallah, Khaldoun Ben Hamda, Faouzi Maatouk
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Background. Coronary artery disease remains the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in the general population. Several studies in developed countries have reported a gender-related difference in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in terms of risk factors, clinical presentation, delays in management, therapeutic modalities, and in-hospital as well as one-year outcomes. Data from non-developed countries about women with STEMI remain rare. We therefore aimed through this study to investigate the baseline characteristics of STEMI in Tunisian women compared to men and to determine the impact of gender difference on STEMI complications, in-hospital mortality, and one-year follow-up outcomes. Methods. All …
Effect Of Awareness Of Government Initiatives On Financial Inclusion: A Study Of Domestic Workers In The City Of Bengaluru, Kiran Hiremath, Shalini R
Effect Of Awareness Of Government Initiatives On Financial Inclusion: A Study Of Domestic Workers In The City Of Bengaluru, Kiran Hiremath, Shalini R
Journal of International Women's Studies
A key assumption in economics is that economic growth brings prosperity to all sections of the society in an equitable manner. Historically, economic growth is not associated with equitable distribution of wealth. Governments all over the world make policies and implement them to engineer an equitable distribution of wealth. Financial exclusion is the single most important factor which can keep poorer sections of the society away from the benefits of economic growth. Financial inclusion creates a window of opportunity for poor sections of society to take part in the economic prosperity brought in by economic growth. A financially inclusive society …

Dissenting Bodies, Disruptive Pandemic: Farmers' Protest And Women's Participation In Mass Mobilisation In India, Paromita Chakrabarti
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
While authoritarian states promoting neoliberal forms of governance have taken advantage of COVID-19 to weaken the foundations of civil society, there has also been a significant rise in contemporary struggles for a more democratic society during and around the pandemic. From December 2019 to November 2021, India has seen a significant number of protests. The timeline of collective resistance against the state and its divisive, violent and neoliberal agenda represents a critical juncture in Indian politics. This paper focuses on the farmers' protests that started from last November and recently ended in a stunning, hard-earned victory. In a sector that …
The Curious Case Of A Women’S Academic Collar, Valentina S. Grub
The Curious Case Of A Women’S Academic Collar, Valentina S. Grub
Transactions of the Burgon Society
In mid-nineteenth century America, women’s seminaries were established as a counterpoint to men’s colleges. However, while their male counterparts immediately adopted various iterations of academic gowns, these seminaries struggled to formalize their own academic attire. One element of it was a ‘collar’ made of fine mesh and, most unusually, sectioned into panels by lengths of boning. The ends would have been drawn around the back of the neck and fastened by a row of tiny, cumbersome hooks and eyes. As an academic accessory, such a collar has hitherto been unknown to the academic dress academe. Moreover, it offers a scholarly …

“Gender At The Root Of Everyday Life”: Equity, Activism, And The Perspectives Of Diana J. Fox, Goutam Karmakar
Journal of International Women's Studies
This in-depth conversation with Diana J. Fox, Professor of Anthropology at Bridgewater State University, Massachusetts, United States, and a cultural and applied anthropologist, scholar-activist, and documentary film producer, puts emphasis on how Fox’s research demonstrates that a decolonial feminist viewpoint inspires and even necessitates that Indigenous feminisms be at the center, and that researchers from the global north have a responsibility to do so. In this interview, Fox talks about how, as a feminist decolonial/anticolonial anthropologist, she has worked for global gender justice and equality throughout her career, especially within the Anglophone Caribbean, which is where the bulk of her …
Bodies In Transit: Women, War, And Violence In Select Fiction From Nepal, Lakhipriya Gogoi
Bodies In Transit: Women, War, And Violence In Select Fiction From Nepal, Lakhipriya Gogoi
Journal of International Women's Studies
The figures of women in conflict zones have been presented in South Asian literature chiefly as torn and battered bodies/souls, usually carrying an irremediable suffering and sense of loss that they bear as wives, mothers, and daughters while their male compatriots participate in the zone of war. The twentieth century surge in identity movements and political conflicts in South Asia, however, offers us new figures of women as “warriors” or direct participants in the zones of violence. The usurpation of such new bodies, on the one hand, defies the hegemonic feminization of women’s bodies as caregivers, and on the other …

Hasina’S Sisters Are Machine Women: Women’S Violated Bodies And/In Bangladeshi Garments Factories, Umme Al-Wazedi
Journal of International Women's Studies
Hasina and Shimu are garment factory workers; Hasina’s life is portrayed in Monica Ali’s 2003 debut novel, Brick Lane. Shimu is the main character of Rubaiyat Hossain’s 2020 film Made in Bangladesh. Hasina and Shimu suffer from violence enacted on their bodies by both male garment factory workers and their husbands. They suffer from male hegemonic masculinity, patriarchal norms, and discriminatory economic structures. Furthermore, the dominant image of a female garment factory worker as sexually promiscuous enables more violence against them. In addition, economic violence is used to control and limit women’s bodies. Their bodies become a site of control …
After Violence: Dalit Women’S Narratives And The Possibilities Of Resistance, Anandita Pan
After Violence: Dalit Women’S Narratives And The Possibilities Of Resistance, Anandita Pan
Journal of International Women's Studies
The history of feminist criticism has undergone a long trajectory where it gets written in terms of difference and sameness. Such anxieties get written in the Indian scenario with reference to the “caste” question. The predominant constructions of “woman” and “Dalit” give prominence to savarna women and Dalit men. As such, the mutuality of caste and gender is unaddressed. The intersectional identity of Dalit women, simultaneously affected by caste and patriarchy, has challenged this homogeneity claimed by mainstream Indian feminism and Dalit politics. Dalit feminism provides a critique of Brahmanism implicit in mainstream feminism, and the reproduction of patriarchal norms …

Loveliness Far Above Them All: Women And Wives Of The Genesis Apocryphon, Daniel M. Picus
Loveliness Far Above Them All: Women And Wives Of The Genesis Apocryphon, Daniel M. Picus
Studies in Mediterranean Antiquity and Classics
The retelling of the bible is a common method of biblical interpretation within the Dead Sea Scrolls library. Stories, events, ideas, and characters are re-imagined by the authors of texts who pay homage to what we consider the “canonical” biblical story. In the process, characters and stories are reinterpreted. This reinterpretation provides insight into a community’s understanding of itself, and of the roles that its members play. I am interested in the re-imagined women of Genesis that appear in the Genesis Apocryphon. I will compare both of them (Bitenosh and Sarai) to their counterparts in the book of Genesis, and …

The Other Side Of My Heart: Latina Immigrant’S Oral History In Music, Lorena Guillén
Music & Musical Performance
The author recorded six women from her local community in North Carolina. They shared and reflected about their dreams and fears while also evaluating the things they gained and lost in moving to the US. This work became a song cycle with music by Argentine composer Alejandro Rutty and lyrics based on the interviews, which the author edited from the exact words they expressed in their conversations. Rutty and the author used fragments of these interviews as part of an audio collage played at the beginning of each song.

A “Free Artist Of Color” In Late-Eighteenth-Century Saint-Domingue: The Life And Times Of Minette, Bernard Camier
Music & Musical Performance
This article sets forth, for the first time in detail, the life and career of Minette, who was the main female opera singer in Port-au-Prince at the end of the eighteenth century. The city was the capital of the thriving and wealthy French colony of Saint-Domingue (which, upon gaining independence in 1804, took the name Haïti). Theatrical activity in Port-au-Prince was comparable to what one could find in any large provincial city, and the success that Minette gained was all the more remarkable for her being categorized as colored (mestive). The details of Minette’s origins, life, and career …
Myth, Soul, And The Feminine
Journal of Conscious Evolution
What are some of the root causes that have caused the subjugation of women? Could it all have begun with the fantastical and alluring myths we were told? If so, how does myth become truth for societies as a whole? If that does happen, then it must be true that the mythic is where the emergence of the soul is found; the soul of humanity? Thereby, creating the realities found in the society of today. Even more intriguing is how consciousness and art find their way in merging with myth producing awareness, wonder, and connection in society. Thus, revealing the …
