In Defense Of Public Schools: A Toolkit From The Midwest, Ferial Pearson, Ann Hunter-Pirtle
In Defense Of Public Schools: A Toolkit From The Midwest, Ferial Pearson, Ann Hunter-Pirtle
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
One of the defining features of public schools is that they operate at the will of the people, with public oversight from elected school boards. In addition to being free and open to all, free from religious affiliation, and promoting civic understanding and participation, much of what makes public schools public happens through the democratic process. We have noticed that many teachers are so overworked and overwhelmed - rightly focused on their own classrooms and their own students’ day to day struggles - that it’s not easy for them to engage and advocate for themselves and their students in the …

Robin Hood Politics: An Analysis Of Wealth Redistributive Policies And The Impact Of Political Donations, Marley R. Dizney Swanson
Robin Hood Politics: An Analysis Of Wealth Redistributive Policies And The Impact Of Political Donations, Marley R. Dizney Swanson
Gettysburg Social Sciences Review
Both Democrats and Republicans have taken strong positions on wealth redistribution. But is there variance within the parties? I hypothesize that while moderate non-donors and moderate donors will favor increases in federal spending for such policies at similar rates, both liberal and conservative donors will be less likely to favor spending due to attachment to their personal wealth. This paper analyzes the differences in support for increasing the budgets of five wealth redistributive policies while controlling for political donations: public schools, welfare, aid to the poor, childcare, and Social Security. The research finds that moderates and moderate donors support do …
The Politics Of Abortion And Maternal Health: A Discussion Paper, Ihsan Ullah, Ayaz Ayub, Edwin Van Teijlingen
The Politics Of Abortion And Maternal Health: A Discussion Paper, Ihsan Ullah, Ayaz Ayub, Edwin Van Teijlingen
Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)
Abortion should be legally allowed for women because it can save mothers from childbirth-related complications and death. Legal abortion is one of the safest methods to terminate a pregnancy when there is a risk to the mother’s health by childbirth or severe deformity of the fetus or it is unwanted. Unfortunately, approximately half of all abortions worldwide mostly in nations where abortion is severely restricted and are performed in dangerous settings. These risky abortions are a significant contributor to maternal morbidity and disability. Limiting a woman's access to an abortion does not stop abortion; rather, it just encourages more risky …
Territorial Planning Policy For Sustainable Development, Gjergj Thomai
Territorial Planning Policy For Sustainable Development, Gjergj Thomai
International Journal of Business and Technology
Urban planning in Albania, has been promoted in various forms of organization. Ultimately Territorial Planning Law represents another form of policies on the territory that is closely linked to the decentralization of control of the territory.
Up to now, four developments has been particularly important:
- European approach, which gave an increase in economic and social cohesion policy;
- Decentralization in the early 2000s, which has made local governments full participants in the process of territorial planning;
- The emergence of the notion of sustainable development;
- Initiation of international economic relations after the nineties.

A Tale Of Two Administrations: A Comparison Between The George W. Bush And The Barack H. Obama Administrations On Border Security, Marcos L. Misis
The Journal of Economics and Politics
Border security remains a prominent political issue in 2018. During the 2016 presidential campaign, candidates from the Republican and Democratic parties referred to the effectiveness, or lack thereof, of policies about border security that were implemented by the Bush and Obama Administrations. This article analyzes the policies implemented by both administrations and compares them in order to assess the validity of claims about these policies made by presidential candidates from both parties during the 2016 campaign. In addition, this article quantitatively analyzes data from immigration and border enforcement policies for both the Bush and Obama administrations and offers possible policy …
Decriminalization Of Prostitution Policy: Amnesty International Punishes A Dissenting Member, Marcia R. Lieberman
Decriminalization Of Prostitution Policy: Amnesty International Punishes A Dissenting Member, Marcia R. Lieberman
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
In 2016, Marcia Lieberman, a local group coordinator for Amnesty International, USA, was expelled by the board of directors for speaking out publicly against the new Policy on the Decriminalization of Sex Work. Amnesty used a little-known rule that prohibits a member from publicly opposing a position that Amnesty has taken. Lieberman writes about her experience and her view that Amnesty violated its fundamental principle of protecting free speech to silence her dissent.
A Description And Analysis Of Mediterranean Cities And Regions Planning For Climate Impacts, W. Bowman Cutter, Jenny Griffin, Laurel Hunt
A Description And Analysis Of Mediterranean Cities And Regions Planning For Climate Impacts, W. Bowman Cutter, Jenny Griffin, Laurel Hunt
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
The current literature on local climate change adaptation contains comparatively little research into local and regional adaptation to climate change, and few comparisons of local climate adaptation initiatives across broad climate regions. Our conjecture is that areas with similar climates will face similar sets of climate risks and therefore can share adaptation solutions. This paper examines 36 adaptation plans (cases) selected from across the five Mediterranean climate regions in order to find if there is evidence that groups of cities and/or regions share similar responses to climate risks. We examined adaptation strategies for sea level rise, increased temperatures, flooding, reduced …

Soviet Disarmament Policy--What Lies Ahead?, Raymond G. Burkemper
Soviet Disarmament Policy--What Lies Ahead?, Raymond G. Burkemper
Naval War College Review
Disarmament has not been achieved in the world today because each of the major nations involved is influenced by certain differing pressures and goals. In the center of this stalemate stand the United States and the Soviet Union. This paper is a study of the disarmament policy of one of these two main adversaries---the Soviet Union.
Review Of Demographics And The Demand For Higher Education, By Nathan Grawe (2018), Michael T. Catalano
Review Of Demographics And The Demand For Higher Education, By Nathan Grawe (2018), Michael T. Catalano
Numeracy
Nathan D. Grawe. 2018. Demographics and the Demand for Higher Education (Baltimore: John Hopkins University Press). 175 pp. ISBN 9781421424132.
Grawe introduces the Higher Education Demand Index (HEDI), a new probabilistic model designed to produce more nuanced forecasts of college attendance in the US than one-dimensional predictions based on the declining number of 18 year-olds. Using HEDI, Grawe confirms that nationwide attendance at both 2-year and 4-year schools is likely to decline over the next decade, but that the nature of this decline will vary by type of institution, geography, race and ethnicity, and parental income and education levels; some …

It is a privilege and a real pleasure to be able to speak to you this morning, but it is with some trepidation and, frankly, with misgivings that l have chosen to discuss U.S. Naval Policy at the War College. There are two reasons, however, that have impelled me to tempt your patience and, perhaps, your good will.

Twelve Injured Men: Why Injured Jurors Should Not Receive Workers' Compensation Coverage From The Courts, Corey Baron
Twelve Injured Men: Why Injured Jurors Should Not Receive Workers' Compensation Coverage From The Courts, Corey Baron
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Note argues that the legislature should add a provision to New York’s Workers’ Compensation Act that expressly precludes jurors from coverage. Such a provision would comport with the policy underlying the statute, the statute’s structure, and the statute’s language. Moreover, that legislative provision would prevent the court from wasting the considerable time and expense of grappling with other courts’ inconsistent interpretations of workers’ compensation statutes and their underlying policies. First, Part I of this Note provides an overview of the workers’ compensation law and explores the policies underlying the advent of workers’ compensation statutes. Then, Part II surveys …
World Outlook And Foreign Policy Of Communist China, Clyde B. Sargent
World Outlook And Foreign Policy Of Communist China, Clyde B. Sargent
Naval War College Review
Our subject is "The World Outlook and Foreign Policy of Communist China." This subject implies describing the world as it is seen by the Communist Chinese, and this is not an easy task for any Westerner. In my reading for this presentation I have consulted Chinese, Indian, Australian, and American sources of interpretation, but l have relied even more upon my own long observation and study of historical and contemporary Chinese attitudes.
Contemporary Foreign Policy In Historical Perspective, Joseph C. Harsch
Contemporary Foreign Policy In Historical Perspective, Joseph C. Harsch
Naval War College Review
When I received the invitation to address this audience on the subject of "Contemporary Foreign Policy," I began to reflect on the episode, in my own experience which I thought might have some relevance to the changes we see occurring in the world today. The first thing that came to mind was a moment back in October of 1939, just after the Germans had overrun Poland. I arrived, a novice in such matters, in the city of Berlin and sought out the advice of the American military attack, a man greatly respected and honored in the American community in Berlin …

Soviet Policy Toward Sadat's Egypt From The Death Of Nasser To The Fall Of General, Robert O. Freedman
Naval War College Review
At the time of Nasser's death the Soviet Union had reached the pinnacle of its influence in Egypt and throughout the Middle East. 1 The Russians had acquired air and naval bases in Egypt which greatly enhanced their military position in the eastern Mediterranean vis-a-vis the United States and had obtained port rights in Syria, Yemen, South Yemen, the Sudan, and Iraq, which gave increased Soviet access to the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Indian Ocean.
The Soviet Navy's Role In Foreign Policy, Richard T. Ackley
The Soviet Navy's Role In Foreign Policy, Richard T. Ackley
Naval War College Review
The peacetime role of naval forces in a nation's foreign policy is often obscure and tends to be neglected in foreign policy literature. While the dramatic growth of the Soviet naval fleet has not gone unnoticed, most articles on the subject have stressed the Soviet naval challenge to United States or NATO seapower.

Iran And American Security Policy In The Middle East, Bard E. O'Neill, Paul R. Viotti
Naval War College Review
In October 1973 the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) sent shock waves through the industrialized world when it decreased the overall production of oil and embargoed the United States, Portugal, South Africa, and the Netherlands. The impact of these developments and a subsequent quantum rise in oil prices for the Western states and Japan was immediate and far reaching. On both sides of the Atlantic and in Tokyo there were fears of recession and even depression, the possibility of millions unemployed, and of massive deficits in the balance of payments.
