Experiential Learning And The Basic Communication Course: A New Path To Assessing Forensic Learning Outcomes, Ben Walker
Speaker & Gavel
Scholars have often touted the educational benefits of forensics (e.g.: Bartanen, 1998; Beasley, 1979; Brownlee, 1979; Ehninger, 1952; Gartell, 1973; Jensen, 2008; McBath, 1975; Millsap, 1998; Schroeder & Schroeder, 1995; Stenger, 1999; Yaremchuk, 1979). Critics, most notably Burnett, Brand, and Meister (2003), have argued forensics is only a competitive game with the idea of education used as a crutch to uphold the activity in the eyes of schools. While attempting to counter critics, many forensic educators have scrambled to find proof of student learning. Besides theoretical approaches to potential learning methods (e.g., Dreibelbis & Gullifor, 1992; Friedley, 1992; Sellnow, Littlefield, …

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Background: Multiple factors have created a perfect storm of health care provider shortages in the United States. Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), long established as high-quality, cost-effective health care providers, are meeting health care needs across the nation in a variety of settings, and in Wisconsin will be needed to augment the primary care workforce. With 5.7% of its registered nurses credentialed as APRNs, Wisconsin lags behind the national average of 8.7%. However, current capacity to educate this workforce is strained, requiring innovative data-driven clinical education models.
Purpose: To identify gaps in the current clinical educational framework for nurse practitioner …
How History Shows The Damage Done By Corporate Influence On Education. A Book Review Of Schooling Corporate Citizens: How Accountability Reform Has Damaged Civic Education And Undermined Democracy, Clio Stearns
Democracy and Education
Evans’s book addressed the history of accountability-based reform against the thesis that corporate interests have played an extensive, insidious rule in directing the nature of educational policy. This review lauds Evans’s careful history and documentation, as well as his sharp critique of the dangerous implications of corporate involvement for social studies education. The review questions Evans’s open-mindedness in relation to the Common Core State Standards.

A New Imperative For Detracking Schools. A Book Review Of On The Same Track:How Schools Can Join The Twenty-First-Century Struggle Against Resegregation, Pamela D. Fisher
Democracy and Education
In her 2014 book, On the Same Track: How Schools Can Join the Twenty-First-Century Struggle Against Resegregation, Burris builds upon the compelling case made for detracking put forth by Oakes and others in the 1970s and ’80s. Today, decades after the pioneers in detracking schools, Burris revisits the tracking practices still prevalent in America’s public schools through the lenses of those who are in the racial or ethnic minority and who are poor and at a time when school accountability often drives school practice and school choice to additional layers of sorting.

The Politics Of Mindfulness. A Response To "Mindfulness, Democracy, Education", Patrick W. Comstock
The Politics Of Mindfulness. A Response To "Mindfulness, Democracy, Education", Patrick W. Comstock
Democracy and Education
Mindfulness is rapidly becoming a mainstream educational intervention. A growing number of schools, colleges, and universities are incorporating mindfulness into the curriculum, and while there is a substantial body of research literature in psychology attesting to the mental and physical benefits of mindfulness, critics of the movement have suggested that mindfulness lacks social and political dimensions. In this article, a response to “Mindfulness, Democracy, and Education,” the author shows why this line of criticism is misguided. Far from being self-centered, asocial, and apolitical, the practice of mindfulness is intrinsically political.

Exploring Prosocial Behavior Through Structured Philosophical Dialogue: A Quantitative Evaluation, Monica B. Glina
Democracy and Education
The problem of bullying in schools cannot be overstated. Researchers have examined the problem of bullying in schools from a variety of perspectives and have found that bullying has serious short- and long-term effects not just for the victim but for the bully as well. A variety of interventions have been implemented, and research shows that the majority, which are monological in nature, have demonstrated minimal, if any, impact on counteracting occurrences of bullying in schools. This study uses three quantitative measures to examine the impact that an instructional method steeped in the dynamics of dialogical inquiry has on students’ …

"How To Be Nice And Get What You Want": Structural Referents Of "Self" And "Other" In Experiential Education As (Un)Democratic Practice, Franklin Vernon
Democracy and Education
This critical ethnography explores a social justice program utilizing nontraditional, democratic, "experiential" education practices. The author posits a historical legacy of pedagogy of self obscures its emancipatory, democratic potential while simultaneously expanding on contemporary discourses of self and other as aspects of the educational setting. Students' labors to reference and enact oppressive, capitalistic idealizations of either self or other problematizes pragmatic theories of self, and the author draws upon critical pragmatism to reposition self and other as aspects of pedagogy and curriculum in democratic education.

We begin by sharing our understanding of democracy as a philosophy and a political system. We then provide a background for the concept of mindfulness as it is used by those in the field of education and health care and as we connect it to democracy and democratic education. We introduce a mindfulness pedagogy and use this pedagogy to develop our concept of mindfully democratic schools. We use the work of John …
The Half-Life & After-Life Of New Media, Nancy Austin
The Half-Life & After-Life Of New Media, Nancy Austin
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
It is fitting to think of the half-life of new media using the time-based metaphor of radioactive decay. As a metaphor, an object’s half-life can be a useful way to talk about the potent technological modernity of new media and, like Walter Benjamin’s well-known notion of the aura, call attention to an object’s performativity. However, Benjamin’s aura remains a constant reminder of irrevocable originality whereas remarking on half-life references a quality that changes over time. But what happens after the rhetorical impact of being new has run its course? What is the life expectancy of once-new media and what of …

Enhancing Education Through Digitization, Jessica Muetterties
Enhancing Education Through Digitization, Jessica Muetterties
Kaleidoscope
As technology becomes more a part of everyday life, it is increasingly important that future and current educators learn how to integrate the use of technology into day-to-day classroom activities. Teachers must learn to embrace the fact that computers and other aspects of technology are used by children everyday; the classroom needs to incorporate new and emerging technology. In this essay, I describe my experiences as an education major working in a research laboratory in Computer Science at the University of Kentucky. My work in the lab taught me how to digitize, process, and prepare on-line presentations of a variety …

Leadership Education And Development For Justice Using The Canonical Framework Of John Rawls's A Theory Of Justice, Brandon W. Kliewer, Jeff Zacharakis
Educational Considerations
Higher education that presupposes a specific conception of justice do well in preparing students to make claims of justice from specific perspectives or positions. However, civic leadership students with a strong background in specific conceptions of justice are often not equipped with necessary skills, dispositions, and habits to exercise leadership in ways that can manage political contestation associated with competing claims of justice.
Community Connections: Integrating Community-Based Field Experiences To Support Teacher Education For Diversity, Christine Beaudry
Community Connections: Integrating Community-Based Field Experiences To Support Teacher Education For Diversity, Christine Beaudry
Educational Considerations
In the United States, preservice teachers often graduate and go on to work with students whose backgrounds are different from their own and in communities in which they have limited lived experience. This holds significant implications for teacher education programs given the importance of life and educational experiences in informing teaching and learning knowledge and practices and the subsequent impact of these practices in shaping the experiences and trajectories of students’ lives.
Teaching The Truth: Difficulties With Social Justice And Social Class In Graduate School, Leona English, Carole Roy
Teaching The Truth: Difficulties With Social Justice And Social Class In Graduate School, Leona English, Carole Roy
Educational Considerations
Nowadays, anyone who wishes to combat lies and ignorance and to write the truth must overcome at least five difficulties. He must have the courage to write the truth when truth is everywhere opposed; the keenness to recognize it, although it is everywhere concealed; the skill to manipulate it as a weapon; the judgment to select those in whose hands it will be effective; and the cunning to spread the truth among such persons.

Connections are made between the ideas and data presented in two articles to personal experiences: Imagining a Better World: Service-Learning as a Benefit to Teacher Education and the 2012 study from the University of Kentucky, which looks at the impact of service-learning in practice. Imagining a Better World: Service-learning as a Benefit to Teacher Education defines service-learning as “An ‘approach to teaching and learning in which service and learning are blended in a way that both occur and are enriched by the other’” (Jagla et al, 2010 p.3) This blending of service and learning is exemplified in a medical mission …

Implementing The Sociocultural Theory While Teaching Esl, Michele S. Lee
SPACE: Student Perspectives About Civic Engagement
Abstract: Previous literature presents there is a demand to teach adult learners English due to the amount of non-English speaking citizens. Therefore, educators have responded to the need for programs that teach adult learners English. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes help adults by providing a foundation of comprehension for the English language, this foundation helps adults navigate their lives. Previous educational research states that Vygotsky’s (1978) Sociocultural Theory is a theory practiced in the ESL classroom because the Sociocultural Theory consists of cultural approach in addition to an educational approach. The Sociocultural Theory and has been beneficial for …
