Queer Hybridity And Performance In The Multimedia Texts Of Arroyo And Lozada, Ed Chamberlain
Queer Hybridity And Performance In The Multimedia Texts Of Arroyo And Lozada, Ed Chamberlain
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Queer Hybridity and Performance in the Multimedia Texts of Arroyo and Lozada" Ed Chamberlain examines the unconventional writing of Puerto Rican writers Rane Arroyo and Ángel Lozada. Arroyo and Lozada craft texts which can be interpreted as performances and these performative texts blend internet-based writings with more traditional genres including the novel and poetry. Arroyo's and Lozada's stylistic approaches exhibit a queer sensibility which resembles the way in which Latina/o queer people construct and perform their cultural identities. Chamberlain argues that these queer performances suggest we can neither create nor identify absolute truth in matters of identity …
The Problems Of Expert Witness In Criminal Law, Rafiqa Qurrata A'Yun
The Problems Of Expert Witness In Criminal Law, Rafiqa Qurrata A'Yun
Indonesia Law Review
The expert testimony is a potential problem in the future due to the impact of the advancement of science and technology. These progressions have an impact on the quality of the crime methods, thus it must be balanced with improving the quality and method of evidence evaluation that requires knowledge and expertise. This paper examines the place of expert witness to be considered as one of the evidence in criminal case investigation and criminal court. I argue that expert qualifications should be determined based on formal education, professional experiences, and the relevance of his expertise with the case. The Criminal …

Drugs, Depression, And Dating Violence: Partnering With Schools To Collect And Use Data On Adolescent Risky Behaviors, Rebecca H. Donham, Shari Kessel Schneider
The Foundation Review
In 2005, the MetroWest Health Foundation launched a 10-year initiative to conduct the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey biennially with every high school and middle school student in the foundation’s 25-town region. The survey asks students about substance use, violence, sexual behaviors, mental health, and nutrition.
In the first year of the initiative, about two-thirds of public high schools and half of the middle schools in the region participated. By 2012, every public high school and middle school participated. Encompassing some 40,000 students, the survey is considered to be one of largest, if not …

Theoretical Review On Indonesian Academic Legal Education In Conjunction With Asean Economic Community Era, Ariawan Gunadi
Indonesia Law Review
Indonesia will be welcoming the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015 as a multilateral agreement to create integrated regions such as: (a) a single market and production base, (b) a highly competitive economic region, (c) a region of equitable economic development, and (d) a region fully integrated into the global economy. These characteristics are interrelated and mutually reinforcing in a sense that overall development would not be complete without total completion of the previous sector. This article discusses the participation of Indonesia as part of ASEAN as a single market and production base, through free flow of services which targets higher …
Towards A History Of Electronic Literature, Urszula Pawlicka
Towards A History Of Electronic Literature, Urszula Pawlicka
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Towards a History of Electronic Literature" Urszula Pawlicka investigates the development of theoretical frameworks of and for the study of electronic literature. Pawlicka's objective is show how electronic literature developed and posits that the field underwent to date three transitional phases including several sub-phases where certain aspects and perspectives overlapped. She argues that by distinguishing developments in different phases we can see that electronic literature moved from text to technotext, from text as decoding meaning to text as a process of information and information system, from an interpretation to experience, from visual perception to performativity, from close …
Electronic Literature And The Effects Of Cyberspace On The Body, Maya Zalbidea, Xiana Sotelo
Electronic Literature And The Effects Of Cyberspace On The Body, Maya Zalbidea, Xiana Sotelo
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Electronic Literature and the Effects of Cyberspace on the Body" Maya Zalbidea and Xiana Sotelo discuss how new technologies are facilitating the emancipation of subjugated subjects aimed at transforming unequal social relations through an intersectional and performative approach. This perspective is discussed through the exploration of the so-called intersectional approach described by Berger and Guidroz, Haraway's situated knowledges, and Butler's performative agency based on transgressions. Framed within the posthuman, post-biological deconstruction of social and cultural hierarchies, Zalbidea and Sotelo argue for the value of a conjuncture between postcolonial post-modern/post-structuralist literature and the field of feminist cultural studies. …
Adapting The Law Of Armed Conflict To Autonomous Weapon Systems, Kenneth Anderson, Daniel Reisner, Matthew Waxman
Adapting The Law Of Armed Conflict To Autonomous Weapon Systems, Kenneth Anderson, Daniel Reisner, Matthew Waxman
International Law Studies
As increasingly automated—and in some cases fully autonomous—weapon systems enter the battlefield or become possible, it is important that international norms to regulate them head down a path that is coherent and practical. Contrary to the claims of some advocates, autonomous weapon systems are not inherently illegal or unethical. The technologies involved potentially hold promise for making armed conflict more discriminating and causing less harm on the battlefield. They do pose great challenges, however, with regard to law of armed conflict rules regulating the use of weapons. To adapt existing law to meet those challenges, we propose a three-tiered approach …

Blurring Group Boundaries: The Impact Of Subgroup Threats On Global Citizenship, Stephen Reysen, Iva Katzarska-Miller, Phia S. Salter, Caroline Hirko
Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions
We examined the outcomes of an extinction threat (possible discontinuation of a group’s symbolic or actual existence) to one’s nation on global citizenship identification and related prosocial values. In Study 1, participants showed a drop in global citizenship identification when America was threatened (vs. absence of threat). In Study 2, participants reported lower global citizenship identification when America was threatened (vs. absence of threat) and the perception that one’s normative environment did not support a global citizen identity mediated the relationship between threat and identification. Furthermore, the threat was shown to indirectly predict lower endorsement for prosocial values and behaviors …
Ethics In Information Systems: Student Performance In Evaluating Ethical Dilemmas, Charletta F. Gutierrez
Ethics In Information Systems: Student Performance In Evaluating Ethical Dilemmas, Charletta F. Gutierrez
Communications of the IIMA
The explosion in information technology in the last 20 years, and in particular, data communications networks, has had a major impact on ethical thinking and ethical issues. This has been manifested in the recent accounting and business scandals, as it is becoming apparent that the ethical dimensions of information systems-related business decisions cannot be safely ignored. It is important for business educators to introduce students to relevant ethical situations that they may face in the business world. This paper discusses the Information Systems ethical environment and students performance on business ethics cases in a telecommunications course. The results of this …
Website Blocked: Filtering Technology In Schools And School Libraries, Jennifer M. Overaa
Website Blocked: Filtering Technology In Schools And School Libraries, Jennifer M. Overaa
School of Information Student Research Journal
This paper investigates the impact of filtering software in K-12 schools and school libraries. The Children's Internet Protection Act, or CIPA, requires that public schools and school libraries use filtering technology in order to receive discounted rates on technology. As a result, nearly all public elementary and secondary schools today use filtering technology. While the provisions of CIPA narrowly define the content to be blocked, filters are often set to block much more than is required. Filtering technology is often ineffective, and many unobjectionable sites end up being blocked, including Web 2.0 sites and tools needed to educate students in …

A Square Peg Into A Round Hole: Trade Dress Protection Of Websites, The Perspective Of The Consumer And The Dilemma For The Courts, Amber R. Cohen
University of Massachusetts Law Review
This Note explores the legalities of trade dress protection for a website, the enforcement of such protection, and what is necessary to protect the “look and feel” of a website. Further, this Note claims it is nearly impossible to protect the “look and feel” of a website because the functionality of the site will always trump protection.

The Slippery Slope Of Material Support Prosecutions: Social Media Support To Terrorists, Emily Goldberg Knox
UC Law Journal
On September 21, 2013, a group of al-Shabaab gunmen attacked the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, killing nearly seventy civilians. In conjunction with this attack, al-Shabaab’s media wing, HSM Press, launched a public relations campaign on Twitter claiming responsibility for the attack, posting live information and pictures, and taunting Kenyan and global security forces with threats of future action. More recently, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s social media campaign has drawn much international attention. This Note discusses whether the U.S. government could successfully pursue material support to terrorist charges against social media companies for allowing designated …
First Amendment Sexual Privacy: Adult Sexting And Federal Age-Verification Legislation, Jennifer M. Kinsley
First Amendment Sexual Privacy: Adult Sexting And Federal Age-Verification Legislation, Jennifer M. Kinsley
New Mexico Law Review
The modern sexting phenomenon amongst adults raises important questions at the intersection of relational privacy, free expression, and federal criminal law. A little-known but long-standing federal statutory scheme—18 USC 2257, 2257A, and the accompanying Attorney General regulations (“Section 2257”)—threatens to criminalize the private exchange of sexual communication between consenting adults. While there has been relatively frequent litigation involving Section 2257 initiated by the commercial adult entertainment industry, courts and scholars alike have been all but silent as to Section 2257’s impact on private, not-for-profit sexual speech. So too has the literature on the legality of sexting focused almost exclusively on …
Constitutional Limits On Surveillance: Associational Freedom In The Age Of Data Hoarding, Deven R. Desai
Constitutional Limits On Surveillance: Associational Freedom In The Age Of Data Hoarding, Deven R. Desai
Notre Dame Law Review
Protecting associational freedom is a core, independent yet unappreciated part of the Fourth Amendment. New surveillance techniques threaten that freedom. Surveillance is no longer primarily forward looking. Today, changing technology allows law enforcement and intelligence services to obtain the same, if not more, information about all of us by looking backward. This shift massively expands the government’s ability to examine, investigate, and deter exercise of the freedom of association.
Forward-looking surveillance has limits that don’t apply to backward-looking surveillance. Some limits are practical such as the cost to place a person in a car to follow a suspect. Some are …

Promoting Innovation While Preventing Discrimination: Policy Goals For The Scored Society, Frank Pasquale, Danielle Keats Citron
Washington Law Review
Professor Zarsky’s response is an erudite and thoughtful analysis of the discrimination concerns raised by our article, The Scored Society. We particularly appreciate his connection of themes in our article with literature on discrimination law. This historical awareness and theoretical sophistication demonstrates the deep continuity between our concerns and those of other legal scholars. Professor Zarsky has led us to realize that there are in fact several normative theories of jurisprudence supporting our critique of the scored society, which complement the social theory and political economy presented in our article. In this response, we clarify our antidiscrimination argument while …

Students’ Perceptions Of And Responses To Teaching Assistant And Peer Feedback, Kelsey J. Rodgers, Aladar K. Horvath, Hyunyi Jung, Amanda S. Fry, Heidi Diefes-Dux, Monica E. Cardella
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Authentic open-ended problems are increasingly appearing in university classrooms at all levels. Formative feedback that leads to learning and improved student work products is a challenge, particularly in large enrollment courses. This is a case study of one first-year engineering student team’s experience with teaching assistant and peer feedback during a series of open-ended mathematical modeling problems called Model-Eliciting Activities. The goal of this study was to gain deep insight into the interactions between students, feedback providers, and written feedback by examining one team’s perceptions of the feedback they received and the changes they made to their solutions based on …

University Professors’ Perceptions About The Impact Of Integrating Google Applications On Students’ Communication And Collaboration Skills, Jacqueline L. Cahill
Journal of Research Initiatives
A qualitative research study was conducted and data were collected by interviewing university professors on their perceptions about the impact of integrating Google Apps, as a means of classroom instructional delivery, on students’ communication and collaboration skills. The participants consisted of eight university professors from a major university, who integrate, or had previously integrated at least two Google Apps Education Edition collaborative tools into their instructional strategies. The result of this study has the potential to benefit universities that are debating on whether utilizing teaching collaborative technology skills, as an instruction tool, would engage students and enhance their communication skills. …

A “Great Balancing Act:” Becoming Dexterous And Deft With New Literacies Pedagogy, Jill Mcclay, Shelley Stagg Peterson, Christine Portier
Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education
In response to recent mandates in literacy curricula, literacy teachers must integrate Web 2.0 and new literacies perspectives into their writing instruction. Such transitions in their pedagogy, however, are often accomplished without adequate support or opportunities for professional development. How do teachers approach the difficult task of changing their perspectives to take new literacies practices into account? This article traces the learning and pedagogical practices of five teachers who worked with the authors in a dual-sited action research study (one in a large urban district, one in a small rural district) for more than two years. We present two themes …
