The Status Of Tracheostomy Patients Receiving Speech Therapy: A Pilot Study, Cai-Jhen Lu, Ya-Hui Wang
The Status Of Tracheostomy Patients Receiving Speech Therapy: A Pilot Study, Cai-Jhen Lu, Ya-Hui Wang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Objectives: Many patients with tracheostomy have significant communication and swallowing difficulties, impairing their quality of life. They also have eating problems because they cannot eat by mouth, and require tube-feeding to receive adequate nutrition. Furthermore, most conscious tracheostomy patients need to communicate with body language because they have difficulties in verbal communication. The patients' treatment rate in speech therapy is not high, and the medical staff in different medical branches have varying degrees of awareness. Few studies exist in Taiwan on the needs of tracheostomy patients to treat the problems of their communication and swallowing. Methods: We conducted a survey …

Issues In Central Bank Communication, Williams D. Kareem
Bullion
This article examines salient issues in communication which is a key aspect of Central Banking. Although, the value of communication has been hitherto ignored, it has become evident over time that, for a central bank to succeed in achieving its set objectives and mandates, it must put in place effective and efficient mechanisms needed in crafting, and disseminating information about its policies. The ability of the central banks to identify their stakeholders and address their unique communication needs will enable them to earn the trust of their stakeholders and portray them as transparent and accountable entities.

The Relationships Between Hcahps Communication And Discharge Satisfaction Items And Hospital Readmissions, Fadi Hachem, Jeff Canar, Francis Fullam Ma, Andrew S. Gallan Phd, Samuel Hohmann, Catherine Johnson
Patient Experience Journal
The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey has become a key metric used by organizations and patients to evaluate patient experience. Readmissions also continue to be a metric used to evaluate performance because of the added cost to both healthcare systems and patients. Both measures are also seen in programs such as Value Based Purchasing that have an effect on hospital reimbursements. Previous studies have demonstrated a relationship between patient perceptions and quality of care, and have found patients to be reliable evaluators of their care. While good communication and positive provider relationships have been related …

Lessons Learnt From The Westgate Shopping Mall Terrorist Attack In Nairobi, Kenya: Involving The Meetings, Incentives, Conferences And Exhibitions Sector In Crisis Communications, Ashley Schroeder, Lori Pennington-Gray, Kelly Bricker
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The terrorist attacks in Nairobi Kenya have been widely disseminated by the world media, thus, affecting the long-term interests of stakeholders. The tourism industry is made up of a vast number of these stakeholders, with the operating sector alone including the accommodation, tourism services, transportation, entertainment, food services, adventure and outdoor recreation, attractions, meetings, incentive, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE), and travel trade sectors. Within each operating sector, there is also a variety of different stakeholders in various segments and organisations. The purpose of this manuscript is to examine tourism crisis communications surrounding the Westgate Shopping Mall attacks in Kenya. The …

Crime Control, Due Process, & Evidentiary Exclusion: When Exceptions Become The Rule, Elizabeth H. Kaylor
Crime Control, Due Process, & Evidentiary Exclusion: When Exceptions Become The Rule, Elizabeth H. Kaylor
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
This paper uses the dichotomy between Herbert Packer’s (1968) two models of criminal justice advocacy – “crime control” and “due process” – as a rhetorical paradigm for understanding policy debate about the exclusion of relevant evidence at trial. Understanding the opposition between crime control and due process advocates as a rhetorical controversy, in which commonly-used ideographs camouflage dramatically different constructions of the concepts at stake, helps to illuminate the way each side mobilizes public support for their narrative of doing . While both the exclusionary rule (which prohibits the use of illegally-obtained evidence in criminal cases) and the “fruit of …
A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Rethinking Aids Website, Jennifer Dettmann
A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Rethinking Aids Website, Jennifer Dettmann
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
A group of scientists known as the Group for Scientific Reappraisal of the HIV-AIDS hypothesis created a web site title, Rethinking AIDS. The group behind the web site argues that AIDS is not a sexually transmitted disease. They even question the existence of the virus entity. My analysis is driven by the critical question: Does the web site construct a reality that affectively alters our perception of HIV-AIDS? In order to answer this question, Goodnight and Poulakos 1981 article, Conspiracy rhetoric: from pragmatism to fantasy to public discourse (Western Journal of Speech), will be utilized.
Wittgenstein, Kierkegaard And The Unspeakable, Joseph C. Mohrfeld
Wittgenstein, Kierkegaard And The Unspeakable, Joseph C. Mohrfeld
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Soren Kierkegaard and Ludwig Wittgenstein have long been thought of as philosophers with little, if anything in common. There are but a handful of contemporary philosophers who have provided links between works by Kierkegaard and works by Wittgenstein; however no one has, at least explicitly, provided the following link I intend to show in this paper. I will show Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling and Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico Philosophicus have a remarkably common theme. The theme is the ability of one to communicate, or understand the unspeakable, that which remains beyond the limits of language. Both have a unique approach to …
Community Assistance For Refugees And Gender Roles: What Could Make This C.A.R. Run Better?, Nathan E. Meyer
Community Assistance For Refugees And Gender Roles: What Could Make This C.A.R. Run Better?, Nathan E. Meyer
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Community Assistance for Refugees is a non-profit service organization in downtown Mankato, Minnesota. Secondary migration to southern Minnesota has increased the refugee population as well as the need for research assessing the needs and concerns of refugees. The purpose of this project was two-fold: first to analyze how C.A.R. is able to meet the needs of its clients and second, to investigate ways in which C.A.R. could improve its services. Traditionally female refugees are less educated and less mainstreamed into American society. This research was designed to help all clients, but special attention was paid to the specific needs of …
The Reality Of Role-Playing Games: How Players Construct Reality Through Language, Jessica Carlson
The Reality Of Role-Playing Games: How Players Construct Reality Through Language, Jessica Carlson
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Role-playing games have a unique structure and exist in multiple mediums. Although some research is available on communication in computer mediated role-playing games, little exists on communication practices in tabletop role-playing games. In my research, I reviewed existing scholarly literature on tabletop role-playing games, as well as theory on the role language plays in constructing reality. I conducted passive participant observation on a group of people playing Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. By applying theory to my ethnographic research, I demonstrated how players constructed a collective reality through communication. Players did this by demonstrating their own enthrallment with the game and …
You've Got Mail: Identity Perceptions Based On Email Usernames, Laura Pelletier
You've Got Mail: Identity Perceptions Based On Email Usernames, Laura Pelletier
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
This study explores the idea that email recipients use the email username of the sender as a mediated cue to make basic assumptions of the identity of the sender. For this study 215 participants completed self-report surveys asking their perceptions of a fictional work group member including sex, age, race, and work productivity. Most participants were able to create a basic identity of their fictitious group member based solely on their email username.
Impact Of Text Messaging On Communication, Heidi Hemmer
Impact Of Text Messaging On Communication, Heidi Hemmer
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
This study used two focus groups to learn about college students and their use of text messages. All of the students were from the Arts and Humanities College at Minnesota State University. One focus group contained five females and other focus group contained five males. The main focus of this study was to find if text messages displaced face-to-face communication. The results of this study suggest text messages do have a displacing effect on face-to-face communication. But text messaging is not the only technology that has the displacement effect. This study also suggests males and females view text messages differently. …
Roommate Rants: Understanding Roommate Conflicts Among Msu Students, Kimberly Halpin
Roommate Rants: Understanding Roommate Conflicts Among Msu Students, Kimberly Halpin
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Roommates seem to go hand in hand with the college experience. Conflicts are inevitable in life and when a pair or small group of college students live together, conflict is likely to occur. The purpose of this study was to find out what conflicts roommates experience, how they communicate those conflicts, and how they resolve those conflicts. All conflicts would involve a Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU) student and their roommate(s). An online survey, consisting of twenty questions, was created and administered to Dr. Kristen Treinen's SPEE 100: Fundamentals of Speech Communication class; twenty out of 750 students responded. The …
The Relationship Between Social Media Use And Consumer Brand Engagement, Joshua Stein
The Relationship Between Social Media Use And Consumer Brand Engagement, Joshua Stein
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
The use of social media by businesses as a communication tool has grown rapidly in recent years. Despite this rapid adoption, little is known about the use of social media among consumers and its effect on brand behavior. This research study aims to fill this gap by investigating the relationship between social media use and consumer brand engagement. To conduct this research, an on-line survey was administered through Survey Monkey to 60 undergraduates ranging in age from 18-24 through a snowball method. Survey questions included: extent of social media use, willingness to engage with brands, views on online vs. offline …
Enhancing Volunteer Effectiveness With Google Apps, Bryan D. Terry, Amy M. Harder, Tonia Zyburt
Enhancing Volunteer Effectiveness With Google Apps, Bryan D. Terry, Amy M. Harder, Tonia Zyburt
The Journal of Extension
Today's Extension volunteers provide many services once provided by professional staff. Volunteers need the same communication tools that Extension professionals use. For many land-grant institutions and county Extension offices, this is logistically difficult and cost prohibitive. Google Apps gives all Extension volunteers free access to email, instant messaging, telephone services, voice mail, and file storage and retrieval. These tools will enhance every volunteer's ability to plan, execute, and assess results of any event or activity. Extension professionals should explore the technology needs of volunteers, encourage volunteers to explore Google Apps, and help volunteers use these tools in their volunteer roles.

Evaluation Of Cell Phone Business In Nigeria: A Paradox Of Gains And Losses, R. A. Sanusi, I. Ndagi, T. R. Shittu
Communications of the IIMA
Communication of information has been enhanced with the advent of Information and Communication Technology, mobile phone technology inclusive, which contribute to economic growth and development. This study assessed the profitability and hidden disincentives of cell phone business in Nigeria. 200 respondents were sampled in five randomly selected States. Data analysis included descriptive and gross margin techniques. In terms of gains, margin-cost ratio (MCR) of mobile phone business was 1.72 while in terms of losses, about 54% reduction in margin was experienced in using generator to provide power. It was suggested that improvement in public power supply must be relentlessly pursued.

The Effect Over Time Of A Video-Based Reflection System On Preservice Teachers’ Oral Presentations, Michael Cavanagh, Matt Bower, Robyn Moloney, Naomi Sweller
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
We report the development of preservice teachers’ oral presentation performance based on a technology-mediated Video Reflection system. Participants video-recorded oral presentations and uploaded them to an online blog to view and reflect on their performance and that of their peers. Four presentations by forty-one participants were analysed using a range of criteria based on what we call the Modes of Communication (voice, body-language, words and alignment between them) and the Constructed Impression of the communication acts (confidence, clarity, engagement and appropriateness). Results indicate a significant improvement across all criteria with a decreased rate of improvement for later iterations.

Perfect Timing: The Rise Of Women’S Political Leadership During Cultural Shifts, Christie E. Pearce
Perfect Timing: The Rise Of Women’S Political Leadership During Cultural Shifts, Christie E. Pearce
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
America has fallen behind in women's leadership, especially in politics. In the approaching era, there will be more viable female political candidates than ever in the past, but will the public be prepared to elect a woman to high office? Studies suggest that mentalities toward female leadership have taken a shift in a positive direction. The idea of what an 'ideal' politician must offer is more feminine in the modern era than ever before. In the age of social media, female politicians have opportunities to reach more constituents through social media in a more effective way than has been offered …

Patient Experience Journal
Improving interpersonal continuity of care—the personal relationship forged between a patient and their primary care provider (PCP) over time—is often considered a goal of primary care. Continuity of care is frequently assessed in terms of longitudinal continuity, or the proportion of encounters with one practitioner, overlooking aspects of the patient-provider relationship that are key to interpersonal continuity of care. Further, few studies explore patients’ perspectives regarding which care experiences enhance or detract from the patient-provider relationship. This study, using focus group interviews, a patient experience CAHPS-PCMH survey, and electronic medical records, explored how patients’ experiences at 10 primary care clinics …

The Discoverability Of E-Mails: The Smoking Gun Of The Modern Era, Michael J. Martin
University of Massachusetts Law Review
The discoverability of e-mails is an area of law that every modern day lawyer must be familiar with in order to avoid the risk of being sanctioned. Over the past years, courts have awarded sanctions to moving parties at a steadily increasing pace. These sanctions have included adverse jury instructions, default judgements, attorney's fees, large monetary fines, and in one instance, a jail sentence. Courts have sent the message that improper conduct will not be tolerated in this developing area of law by not hesitating to order sanctions. Thus, it is essential that modern day lawyers become acquainted with the …

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Technology In Relationships: Findings From An Open-Ended Survey, Katherine M. Hertlein, Katrina Ancheta
The Qualitative Report
The technology world has been growing and flourishing the interest in designing technologies that mediate and create a feeling of relatedness within interpersonal relationships beyond the explicit verbal communication. The purpose of this article is to present a summary of the advantages and disadvantages of technology in couple relationships. To accomplish this, we conducted a recursive open-coding analysis on an already existing data set. Findings indicated the advantages of technology in relationships include the contribution to the development of relationships, relationship management, and relationship enhancement. Challenges introduce by technology into relationships include distancing, lack of clarity, and impaired trust. Implications …

Real Projects, Virtual Worlds: Coworkers, Their Avatars, And The Trust Conundrum, Michael F. Lohle, Steven R. Terrell
The Qualitative Report
This qualitative study informs project managers of the impact that the authentic projection of coworker identity via avatars has on trust and potential project management success when teams use virtual worlds to collaborate. By exploring the common experiences and reactions of potential virtual team participants to a demonstration that showed how to customize avatars and use them to communicate with others, it facilitated the development of a grounded theory that confirms whether the projection of authenticity via avatars is an antecedent of team trust and real project management success. Real management success was the main objective, since it is vital …

The Undergraduate Teaching Assistant: Scholarship In The Classroom, Sarah M. Flinko, Ronald C. Arnett
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This essay casts the role of the Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) within a Kantanian sense of imagination—the not yet pushes off of the actual and the tangible (Kant, 1781/1963). The UTA accesses a temporal glimpse into a professional scholar/teacher vocation through experience in a lived context that unites teaching and scholarship. The role of the UTA offers what Martin Buber (1965/1988) called “imagining the real” (p. 60), a moment of creative ingenuity that begins with the doing of concrete tasks within the profession.

Social Media Platforms’ Use In Building Stakeholder Relationships: The Case Of National Sport Organizations, Gashaw Abeza, Norm O'Reilly
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Social media has been widely touted by the popular media as an ideal tool to develop and sustain positive relationships between an organization and its stakeholders through the creation of dialogue. This research explores the validity of this claim via relationship marketing theory. The specific goal was to investigate how National Sport Organizations (NSOs) use their official Facebook and Twitter pages to create relationship dialogue with their stakeholders. A content analysis was conducted on the official Twitter and Facebook pages of 24 Canadian NSOs, and three hypotheses were tested. Results are contrary to the claims of those promoting social media, …
