Syrian And Palestinian Syrian Refugees In Lebanon: The Plight Of Women And Children, Lorraine Charles, Kate Denman
Syrian And Palestinian Syrian Refugees In Lebanon: The Plight Of Women And Children, Lorraine Charles, Kate Denman
Journal of International Women's Studies
The humanitarian crisis resulting from the Syrian conflict is estimated to be the worst so far of this century. The recent influx of refugees has now reached a point where they are equal to one quarter of Lebanon’s population, causing evident strains on its fragile economy and social structure. Syrians in Lebanon have fled from their home to seek safety, however their vulnerability is now in question as women’s and children’s rights continue to be under threat. This paper investigates the plight of Syrian and Palestinian Syrian refugees in Lebanon with an emphasis on women and children. While there are …
An Econometric Analysis Of The “Backward-Bending” Labour Supply Of Canadian Women, Adib J. Rahman
An Econometric Analysis Of The “Backward-Bending” Labour Supply Of Canadian Women, Adib J. Rahman
Undergraduate Economic Review
This econometric study investigates the labour supply behaviour of Canadian women at different composite hourly wages of all paid jobs. The objectives of this study are to test the canonical model of labour supply and to observe women's responsiveness to changes in the wage rate by using 2009 cross-sectional data. The results show a backward bending labour supply schedule for Canadian women, and thereby confirm the conclusions reached by the Nakamuras (1981), and Robinson and Thomes (1985).

Sisyphus Rolls On: Reframing Women's Ways Of “Making It” In Rhetoric And Composition, Kristin Bivens, Martha Mckay Canter, Kirsti Cole, Violet Dutcher, Morgan Gresham, Luisa Rodriguez-Connal, Eileen Schell
Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion
This is a multi-vocal, multi-institutional piece that examines ways women "make it" in rhetoric and composition. It is in the spirit of being more inclusive that we present our ideas about women's ways of making it in rhetoric and composition. This inclusiveness includes a written transcript of our audio narratives. Humbly, we present our work in this piece after four years of writing and revising in the work spaces we all know so well and offer several glimpses of the work women do as writing teachers. We honor all of the women who teach writing -- those who have made …

The Image-World: A Found Comic Poem, Franny Howes
Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion
The text of this comic is excerpted entirely from Susan Sontag's essay, "The Image World," from her 1977 book On Photography. I was assigned to read and respond to this piece when I attended the Adventure School for Ladies Comics Intensive, an alternative graduate program focused on gender, labor, and the comics industry.Sontag's essay critiques the way contemporary western culture uses photography for "imprisoning reality" and "depersonalizing our relation to the world." Photography creates another reality by the physical impression of light on film: what she calls the "image world." The idea of a separate and additive reality created through …
Contributions Of Women To The Acquisition, Maintenance, And Discard Of Portable Estates, Kathleen L. Wheeler
Contributions Of Women To The Acquisition, Maintenance, And Discard Of Portable Estates, Kathleen L. Wheeler
Northeast Historical Archaeology
As we heighten our focus on the constituents of households, archaeologists are increasingly aware of the role females have to play in compiling and transmitting their portable estates. Women bring in dowries from their natal home, and they participate in choosing and buying household items such as teawares, tablewares, furnishings, and carpets. In Portsmouth, New Hampshire, several features have been discovered with substantial household inventories left behind as de facto refuse when a female head of household departs from the site. This paper explores the gendered nature of acquistion and abandonment behaviors at 19th-century urban sites to better reconstruct socioeconomic …

Restorative Justice And Gendered Violence? From Vaguely Hostile Skeptic To Cautious Convert: Why Feminists Should Critically Engage With Restorative Approaches To Law, Melanie Randall
Dalhousie Law Journal
Legalremedies for crimes ofgendered violence that are more effective, expansive, creative, victim-centred, and victim-sensitive are urgently needed. The author argues that restorative justice is one promising approach -which warrants critical engagement and, more importantly, requires input from feminists in their efforts to end violence against women. The paper concludes with some key principles and recommended directions for further engagement between feminists and proponets of restorative justice in the development of approaches to the harms of gendered violence.
Women's Work Attitudes, Aspirations, And Workforce Participation Before And After Relocation From Public Housing, Edith J. Barrett
Women's Work Attitudes, Aspirations, And Workforce Participation Before And After Relocation From Public Housing, Edith J. Barrett
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
For the past decade or so, public housing policies have focused on moving residents from concentrated housing developments into newly designed mixed-income developments or, through housing choice vouchers, into neighborhoods with lower concentrations of poor. These newer programs are driven by research that suggests public housing residents will have greater opportunity for financial self-sufficiency and, although not openly discussed, will better appreciate the importance of work when they live among higher income working residents. Using panel data collected from public housing residents relocated following the closure of a public housing development, this study explores the relationship between individual characteristics, neighborhood …

Women In The Second Egyptian Parliament Post The Arab Spring: Do They Think They Stand A Chance?, Laila El Baradei, Dina Wafa
Women In The Second Egyptian Parliament Post The Arab Spring: Do They Think They Stand A Chance?, Laila El Baradei, Dina Wafa
Journal of International Women's Studies
Egyptian women were very active on the streets during the 25 January Revolution, both in the demonstrations and in the subsequent elections, showing very high rates of participation as voters, yet surprisingly, very low rates of representation in the 2012 parliament. The current study seeks to explore different views, expectations and perceptions of Egyptian women regarding women’s role in the forthcoming 2013 parliamentary elections, and to identify what alternative measures are needed to strengthen women’s representation in parliament, both quantitatively and qualitatively.
The methodology utilized relied on a literature review in addition to a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the …

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought
The Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought invites contributions for its next issue: "Immigration: Women as Victims and Voices of Change." Deadline: May 1, 2014 Although women account for more than half the legal immigrant population in the United States today, too little attention has been paid to the social and legal issues confronting them on a daily basis. Issues of employment, education, health care, and family, combined with fears of exploitation, discrimination, and legal protection from violence, are among the work that contemporary scholars are exploring today. These are the issues we wish to address in the upcoming issue of …
Women As Leaders In Differing Microfinance Models, Rae M. Randleman
Women As Leaders In Differing Microfinance Models, Rae M. Randleman
Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought
One of the original microfinance institutions (MFIs) is Grameen Bank in Bangladesh and the founder of the bank is Muhammad Yunus (2007). Yunus (2007) initiated a discourse that stated that microloans granted to women resulted in, among other things, increased female empowerment. Much of the global microfinance industry (MFI) has mimicked Yunus’ focus on women and thus created a global master narrative which stated that the capitalist system of credit provided to marginalized women can alleviate poverty and empower women. Other development organizations contend that by itself microfinance cannot empower women; empowerment also requires long-term efforts to influence change in …

Mères Migrantes Et Fi Lles De La République : Identité Et Féminité Dans Le Roman De Banlieue, Mame-Fatou Niang
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
This article examines the writings of female authors from the French suburbs, whose novels feature female protagonists born in immigrant families and engaged in a quest to redefine self. The novels explore the generational differences between these characters and the impact of the quest for self on mother-daughter relations. Their analysis brings light to the authors’ attempt at conjuring the stereotypes generally attached to the banlieue and to immigrant women. I argue that through the evocation of non-hegemonic visions, these novels present the banlieues as dynamic spaces allowing for a new discursive practice of identity and citizenship.
Women And Economic Development In The Middle East And North Africa, Lindsay Markle
Women And Economic Development In The Middle East And North Africa, Lindsay Markle
Student Papers in Public Policy
Women in the Middle East and North Africa face daily challenges due to gender norms in society. These norms are rooted in culture, religion, and family structure and affect the way women are able to participate in their economy and public sphere. In an age of globalization and an increasingly open economy, governments in the Middle East and North Africa would benefit financially from incorporating more women into their workforce.

“Greedy Merchants And Idle Women: Economic Crisis And Community In The Lower Missouri Valley, 1819-1825”, Rebekah M.K. Mergenthal
The Confluence (2009-2020)
As a merchant economy emerged in Missouri River towns in the 1820s, so too did a rhetoric about the roles of women in this changing economy. Rebekah Mergenthal examines the debate about changing gender roles in an evolving market economy.

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this paper is to provide a literature review about intimate partner violence and to present results from thirty-two qualitative interviews regarding women's experiences with an intergenerational cycle of abuse. The literature review presents a comprehensive summary of the literature of intimate partner violence. The review covers causes for IPV, types of gender asymmetry and symmetry, various effects on female survivors, an explanation for the cycle of abuse, possible effective interventions, limitations of existing studies, and it presents areas of research that still need to be studied.
The Female Quixote As Promoter Of Social Literacy, Amy Hodges
The Female Quixote As Promoter Of Social Literacy, Amy Hodges
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640-1830
In Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote, the unruly Arabella clashes with the eighteenth century’s conception of England as an orderly, unromantic site of commercial trade. Arabella’s romances prompt her to expect certain power structures from English society; she invites others to see her body as a spectacle and expects that her actions will solidify her status as a powerful woman. Yet Lennox reveals that English society sees Arabella’s body not as powerful, but as an object upon which they may construct their own potential site for the exchange of knowledge, an objectification that neither Arabella nor Lennox are prepared …

Women After The Rwandan Genocide: Making The Most Of Survival, Cameron Macauley
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Since 2009, IBUKA’s peer-support program for genocide survivors in Rwanda has given observers a unique opportunity to work with women who experienced the violence of 1994. In 2010 James Madison University’s Center for International Stabilization and Recovery began providing technical assistance for this program. This article describes some of the particular characteristics of women survivors in the 19 years since the genocide.

Ethnic Conflict And Forced Displacement: Narratives Of Azeri Idp And Refugee Women From The Nagorno-Karabakh War, Mehrangiz Najafizadeh
Journal of International Women's Studies
The region that now constitutes the Republic of Azerbaijan has witnessed a lengthy history of conflict between Azeris and ethnic Armenians living in Azerbaijan. This longstanding conflict has had severe consequences for Azerbaijan, and Azeri women have been especially affected as hundreds of thousands have been forced from their homes and now live as refugees or as internally displaced persons (IDPs). In this article, I examine Armenian-Azeri ethnic conflict and the plight of Azeri IDP/refugee women both in social historical context and through fieldwork that I have been conducting in Azerbaijan. I first establish the broader sociopolitical context by providing …

Rostker V. Goldberg: A Step Backward In Equal Protection, Or A Justifiable Affirmation Of Congressional Power?, Gilbert L. Purcell, Janet Rappaport
Pepperdine Law Review
The Supreme Court in Rostker v. Goldberg upheld a Congressional decision which excluded women from registration for service in the Armed Forces of the United States. Although the case was brought based upon equal protection grounds, the majority took a separation of powers stance and based its decision upon the fact that the Court has traditionally granted deference to the decisions of Congress in the area of military affairs. The minority opinions disagreed with the majority's analysis and claimed that the central issue in Rostker was not military in nature, but was that Congress' plan to register males only, promoted …
