Agriculture's Fate Under Climate Change: Economic And Environmental Imperatives For Action, John N. Moore, Van Bruggen Dec 2010

Agriculture's Fate Under Climate Change: Economic And Environmental Imperatives For Action, John N. Moore, Van Bruggen

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Farming, ranching, and other agricultural activities are in a relatively unique position amongst all human-caused sources of global warming. Unlike fossil fueled power plants and vehicles, for example, agriculture will suffer direct economic losses from the impacts of global warming on its products, such as through reduced crop yields. Also unlike other causes of global warming, agriculture can both mitigate global warming and increase revenue through a range of different practices, such as carbon sequestration and investments in carbon-friendly renewable energy. This article explains how global warming affects agriculture, especially in the Midwest and Great Plains, and how agriculture contributes …

Electronic Integrated Pest Management Program: An Educational Resource For Extension And Agricultural Producers, Erik Resel, Shannon Arnold Dec 2010

Electronic Integrated Pest Management Program: An Educational Resource For Extension And Agricultural Producers, Erik Resel, Shannon Arnold

The Journal of Extension

As agricultural operations expand and diversify, there is increasing demand for education on pest management tools that can expedite decision-making and improve production practices. The Electronic Integrated Pest Management Program (EIPMP) provides an innovative idea for an up-to-date pest management information database contained on a compact disc (CD) useful for Extension practitioners and agricultural producers in any location. The EIPMP CD innovation is a key beginning to consolidating the vast amount of IPM information that currently exists into a user-friendly format and can be used as a foundation for further expansion.

Makara Journal of Technology

Simulation on the Use of LOSAT Data for Rice Field Mapping. Since the launch of LAPAN-TUBSAT satellite in 2007, Indonesia has been developing mission on earth observation missions for various applications. The next generation mission, called LAPAN-ORARI Satellite (LOSAT), is currently under development and expected to be launched in 2011. In order to facilitate the applications, a thorough assessment of the sensor should be made. This paper presents an examination of simulated LOSAT data for rice monitoring and mapping purposes coupled with QUEST statistical tree. We found that three-band simulated LOSAT data were suitable for the task with reasonably high …

Influence Of Subjective Norms And Communication Preferences On Grain Farmers’ Attitudes Toward Organic And Non-Organic Farming, Kelsey Hall, Emily Rhoades Sep 2010

Influence Of Subjective Norms And Communication Preferences On Grain Farmers’ Attitudes Toward Organic And Non-Organic Farming, Kelsey Hall, Emily Rhoades

Journal of Applied Communications

Interpersonal communication and mass media can influence an individual’s attitude or behavior. International and American studies have shown that interpersonal contacts have influenced farmers’ decisions to adopt or not adopt organic farming while other studies have revealed the communication preferences can differ between organic and non-organic farmers. This study was unique as it combined components of the theory of planned behavior and diffusion of innovations to describe the role subjective norms and communication channels have on forming attitudes toward organic and non-organic farming by non-organic Midwestern grain farmers. Data were collected through a questionnaire sent to 320 members of the …

Reaping Riches In A Wretched Region: Subsidized Industrial Farming And Its Link To Perpetual Poverty, Lloyd G. Carter

Golden Gate University Environmental Law Journal

This Article shows how a long American tradition of helping small farmers has, in the past few decades, morphed into a massive government aid program for large industrialized agribusiness operations—a program that not only drives small farmers off the land but also perpetuates rural poverty because agribusiness requires huge numbers of low-paid, seasonal harvest workers, many of whom are undocumented workers who choose to stay in the United States. Part II reviews the history and evolution of publicly subsidized farming in the Valley. Part III discusses the creation of the Westlands irrigation district as representing the archetype of large "factories …

Suitability Of Land For Agriculture In Tanzania, Taylor Tully, Megan Browning Apr 2010

Suitability Of Land For Agriculture In Tanzania, Taylor Tully, Megan Browning

Atlas of Maine

Agriculture is vital to the economy of Tanzania, providing many jobs and contributing to a large portion of the GDP. This project sought to answer the following question: What land is suitable for agriculture in Tanzania? We hypothesized that in addition to land currently in use for agriculture, there would exist additional land suitable for agriculture that had not yet been realized as such. We used logistic regression to created a model that predicted agricultural suitability across the country. We evaluated twenty variables and came up with nine predictors of agriculture that we included in our final model. The results …

Conversations With Gatekeepers: An Exploratory Study Of Agricultural Publication Editors' Decisions To Publish Risk Coverage, Katie M. Abrams, Courtney A. Meyers Jan 2010

Conversations With Gatekeepers: An Exploratory Study Of Agricultural Publication Editors' Decisions To Publish Risk Coverage, Katie M. Abrams, Courtney A. Meyers

Journal of Applied Communications

The United States’ agriculture industry is impacted by numerous financial, human, legal, and production risks. These risks are frequently reported in mass media and agricultural publications. Farmers often use agricultural magazines to help them make production decisions and learn about new technology, which both involve some element of risk. Gatekeeping is the process of determining what information is included in media coverage in which editors serve as gatekeepers and make decisions regarding what topics to report. The purpose of this study was to discover how agricultural publication editors, in their role as gatekeepers, make decisions regarding coverage of risk related …

Incorporating Mythic And Interpretive Analysis In The Investigation Of Hearing Loss On The Family Farm, Mark Meister, Theresa Hest, Ann Burnett Jan 2010

Incorporating Mythic And Interpretive Analysis In The Investigation Of Hearing Loss On The Family Farm, Mark Meister, Theresa Hest, Ann Burnett

The Qualitative Report

Despite knowing about the dangers of hearing loss, farmers typically choose not to protect their hearing. Examining the myth of farm life, this study aims to discern whether rhetorical myths influence farmers' decisions to wear hearing protection. Researchers conducted 40 interviews with farmers regarding farm life and hearing loss. Results suggest that farmers typically do not use hearing protection; their answers reflect the myths of sacrifice and safety. Analysis demonstrates that knowledge of the relationship between myth and practice should impact future attempts to change farmers' behaviors

A Water Field Civilization: The Shifting Rural Territories Of Taiwan, Pei-Chun Wen Jan 2010

A Water Field Civilization: The Shifting Rural Territories Of Taiwan, Pei-Chun Wen

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

The Taiwanese countryside is representative of Asia's 'hydraulic civilization' and has a society based upon a water-orientated productive landscape. Its irrigation system of paddy fields and fish pondsis strongly interrelated to society's collective units, such as families or unions, which, in turn, structure social morals and behaviors. In a comparison of three different agriculture plains in Taiwan, interpretative maps reveal differences in the settlement patterns related to topography and water resource management. The critical reading of historical documentation and creation of interpretative maps reveals how early settlers solved water threats and managed to stabilize water sources. The study proposes a …

Dairying, Creameries And Cooperatives: Danish Agricultural Contributions To Early Twentieth Century Alberta, Kirstin Bouwsema Jan 2010

Dairying, Creameries And Cooperatives: Danish Agricultural Contributions To Early Twentieth Century Alberta, Kirstin Bouwsema

The Bridge

The early history of what became the province of Alberta in 1905 is characterized largely by the agricultural industry. A great majority of the early twentieth century immigrants came to Alberta expecting to participate in some way in the agricultural economy. However, the farming methods that were implemented in the province varied considerably. Partly, this variation was due to differences in naturally existing phenomena such as climate, soil conditions, and landscape. However, practices also varied due to the cultural backgrounds of the farmers. The First Nations people who had lived on the land for millennia used farming methods far different …
