Assessing Program Effects Or Impact In Enterprise Development Programs, Tristi C. Nichols

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Responding to questions increasingly posed by finders regarding what works best in assisting small businesses and what impacts are caused by program interventions, this paper aims to help program administrators answer these questions. Focusing on business development service provision, specific conceptual measures and quantitative variables are presented with examples in an effort to provide some guidance for collecting and analyzing data. The paper elucidates how program planners may emphasize the impact of their interventions, thereby explaining to finders what works best and how to prove it. It presents two major reflections about measures that yield robust results. The first conceptual …

Effect Of Temperature On Type Of Cerebrovascular Accident, Sen-Yung Liu, Ta-Sen Wei, Cheng-Hsiung Hong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Monthly or seasonal change of climate has been suggested to associate with the incidence and type of stroke, but this association is not conclusive owing to variation in study design and geographic area. The aim of this study was to investigate the short-term effect of temperature variation on type of cerebrovascular accident in first-time stroke patients. There were 1008 in-patients enrolled in this study, including 718 ischemic (infarct) stroke and 290 hemorrhagic stroke patients. The age was 68.9±11.0 years in the infarct and 62.9±13.6 years in the hemorrhagic group; 62%(181 cases) of the infarct group and 55%(395 cases) of the hemorrhagic …

The "Liability Of Newness" And Small Firm Access To Debt Capital: Is There A Link?, Susan Coleman Dec 2004

The "Liability Of Newness" And Small Firm Access To Debt Capital: Is There A Link?, Susan Coleman

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Literature pertaining to the “liability of newness” contends that newer firms face particular difficulties and a greater risk of failure. This article seeks to determine if “newness” is also a disadvantage in the acquisition of debt capital. Results indicate that newer firms were significantly less likely to have lines of credit and were also significantly more likely to have been turned down for their most recent loan. Even when we control for length of relationship with the primary financial services provider, personal guarantees, and collateral, younger firms were still more likely to be turned down for loans. Small firms are …

Legislating The Family: Heterosexist Bias In Social Welfare Policy Frameworks, Amy Lind

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article addresses the effects of heterosexist bias in social welfare policy frameworks on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals and families in the United States. It discusses the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA), the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), federal definitions of family and household, and stereotypes about LGBT individuals. It argues that poor LGBT individuals and families lack full citizen rights and access to needed social services as a result of these explicit and implicit biases.

Examining And Predicting College Students' Reading Intentions And Behaviors: An Application Of The Theory Of Reasoned Action, Lydia Burak

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study examined the recreational reading attitudes, intentions, and behaviors of college students. The theory of reasoned action provided the framework for the investigation and prediction of the students' intentions and behaviors. Two hundred and one students completed questionnaires developed according to the guidelines for the construction of standard theory of reasoned action questionnaires. The instrument assessed students' attitudes, outcome beliefs, subjective norms, and normative beliefs, as well as intentions and behaviors regarding recreational reading. The constructs of the theory explained 35-38 percent of the variance in students' intentions. Attitudes toward recreational reading provided the strongest and most significant contributions.

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"There are many factors that have played a role in the decrease of privacy in the United States today. Since the attacks on September 11, 2001, we as Americans have experienced a widening increase of governmental restrictions, searches, and inquiries that are set in place to insure our future security against terrorist threats. Coupled with this official state entrance into our privacy we also have been subject to deeper invasions privacy from the public sector. We now hunger to see into peoples’ personal lives and to live vicariously through …

Folie Et Écriture Dans Calomnies De Linda Lê, Ching Selao Dec 2004

Folie Et Écriture Dans Calomnies De Linda Lê, Ching Selao

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article proposes to explore the many faces of madness through a reading of Linda Lê’s Calomnies, in which two narrative voices are presented. The following shall demonstrate how this novel reproduces a “romantic” perception of madness as encountered in Michel Foucault’s work. Although this narrative text introduces a mad narrator speaking in the “I” persona, it nonetheless points out the difficulties of letting madness speak for itself. These difficulties are also examined in this study.

Sourcing The News: Teaching Journalism Students Different Approaches To Sourcing Practices, J. Ewart, J. Cokely, P. Coats

Asia Pacific Media Educator

The experiences of a group of Australian university journalism students from diverse backgrounds are explored as they become involved in producing five editions of a new newspaper for the isolated community of Blackall in the Queensland Outback, 1500km north-west of Sydney. During this learning experience, non-traditional journalistic sourcing methods were trialed. This paper documents the exercise, compares the alternative methods with existing practices identified in the literature, and examines the effects and consequences of the exercise.

Scoring Arrears At A Microlender In Bolivia, Mark Schreiner Dec 2004

Scoring Arrears At A Microlender In Bolivia, Mark Schreiner

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Can scoring models help microlenders in poor countries as much as they have helped credit-card lenders in rich countries? This paper presents a scorecard that predicts the probability that loans from a microlender in Bolivia will have arrears of 15 days or more. Although arrears in microfinance depend on many factors difficult to include in scorecards, the paper shows that inexpensive, simple-to-collect data does have some predictive power. In micro-finance, scoring will not replace loan officers, but it can flag high-risk cases and act as a cross-check on loan officers' judgment.

Impact Of Microfinance Programs On Children's Education: Do The Gender Of The Borrower And The Delivery Model Matter?, Nathalie Holvoet Dec 2004

Impact Of Microfinance Programs On Children's Education: Do The Gender Of The Borrower And The Delivery Model Matter?, Nathalie Holvoet

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

This article highlights the effects particular features of microfinance programs have on childhood education. Using data from a South India household survey, the article examines how microfinance impacts schooling and literacy, how credit enters the household, and who brings it in. Regression results show that, in the case of direct bank-borrower credit delivery, it does not matter whether credit enters the household through the mother or the father. However, large differences occur when mothers obtain credit through women's groups. Analysis indicates that combined financial and social-group intermediation leads to higher educational inputs and outputs, mainly for girls. Individual interviewis with …

Microleasing: The Grameen Bank Experience, Asif Dowla

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Grameen Bank was the first microfinance institution (MFI) to introduce microleasing on a large scale. This paper provides a preliminary evaluation of Grameen's leasing program. Instead of providing a full-fledged impact assessment study, we examine the terms and conditions of the leasing program and evaluate its success in terms of outreach, repayment rate, and asset ownership.Analysis of program level data shows that the program is successful in terms of outreach and repayment performance. Through the program, poor men and women have become owners of power tillers, power looms, shallow machines, cellular phones, and even computers. The success of leasing suggests …

There are many female characters with sick/mutilated bodies in Guadeloupe and Martinique’s female literature. Madness, anorexia, self-mutilation, even the suicide of these female characters not only denounce a repressive social order inherited from the history of slavery, but also represent means to affect a social environment that is not responsive to the female quest for identity. Madness, crisis or acts of self-mutilation allow them to escape (“marronnage”) a system, which tries to negate their very existence.
