Roost Sites Used By Sandhill Crane Staging Along The Platte River, Nebraska, Bradley S. Norling, Stanley H. Anderson, Wayne A. Hubert
Roost Sites Used By Sandhill Crane Staging Along The Platte River, Nebraska, Bradley S. Norling, Stanley H. Anderson, Wayne A. Hubert
Great Basin Naturalist
We assessed the influence of water depth, extent of unobstructed view, and human disturbance features on use of roost sites by Sandhill Cranes along the Platte River, Nebraska, during spring migratory stopover. Aerial photos taken near dawn were used to determine areas of flock use and habitat availability in four sample reaches, and measurements were made on the ground at flock roost areas. In general, depths of 1–13 cm were used by sandhill cranes in greater proportion than those available. Exposed sandbars and depths >20 cm were avoided, while depths of 14–19 cm were used in proportion to their availability. …

Red Butte Canyon is a protected, near pristine canyon entering Salt Lake Valley, Utah. It contains a well-developed riparian zone and a perennial stream; hillside vegetation ranges from grasslands on the lower limits to Douglas-fir and aspen stands at the upper elevations. In this paper we describe the history of human impact, natural history aspects of climate, geology, and ecology, and faunal and floral information for key species in the canyon. The role and importance of Research Natural Areas is discussed, particularly with respect to the need to protect Red Butte Canyon—one of the few remaining undisturbed riparian ecosystems in …

Relating Soil Chemistry And Plant Relationship In Wooded Draws Of The Northern Great Plains, Marguerite E. Voorhees, Daniel W. Uresk
Relating Soil Chemistry And Plant Relationship In Wooded Draws Of The Northern Great Plains, Marguerite E. Voorhees, Daniel W. Uresk
Great Basin Naturalist
Soils of the green ash/chokecherry habitat type in northwestern South Dakota were evaluated for 22 properties to determine whether any could be correlated with density of chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) and snowberry (Symphoricarpos occidentalis). Surface soils were moderately fertile, with high levels of all elements except phosphorus and nitrogen. Soils were fine textured with moderately high cation exchange capacity and saturation percentages. However, soils were nonsaline-nonalkaline with low amounts of exchangeable sodium. None of the soil properties showed good correlation with chokecherry and snowberry densities. Greatest correlations were found between each of the shrub species and grass.
The National Wildlife Refuge System: Incompatible Recreational And Economic Uses Of Refuge Lands, Kimberley J. Priestley
The National Wildlife Refuge System: Incompatible Recreational And Economic Uses Of Refuge Lands, Kimberley J. Priestley
Washington International Law Journal
This Comment addresses the problem of incompatible uses on refuge lands. Section I briefly summarizes the history and management of the NWRS and sets forth the basic tenets of the NWRS Administration Act's "compatibility" standard. Section II points out the problems of incompatible secondary uses on refuge lands. Section III examines the possible reasons behind the FWS's acquiescence to these incompatible recreational and economic uses and proposes solutions. Finally, this Comment concludes that an organic act, coupled with increased funding, would help the NWRS achieve its primary goal of providing protection for wildlife resources and their habitats.
The Utsa Boulevard Project: Archaeological Survey Along Leon Creek In Northwest San Antonio, Texas, Herbert G. Uecker
The Utsa Boulevard Project: Archaeological Survey Along Leon Creek In Northwest San Antonio, Texas, Herbert G. Uecker
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
A tract of land in northern San Antonio was briefly examined by the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Several prehistoric archaeological sites had previously been recorded and test excavated within or near the property. Remnants of two of those sites (41 EX 47 and 41 EX 231) within the study area were rediscovered and subjected to limited subsurface testing. At 41 EX 231, what are apparently well-preserved prehistoric cultural deposits were identified. Thus, it is recommended that additional intensive excavations be performed prior to any future disturbances at that site, or that …
Measuring Shrubland Vegetational Structure Using Avian Habitats As An Example, Douglas A. James
Measuring Shrubland Vegetational Structure Using Avian Habitats As An Example, Douglas A. James
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Vegetational sampling of avian habitats stresses the use of methods primarily designed for forest birds. This paper describes a technique for sampling vegetational structure in uneven patchy habitats such as shrublands. Using the method, avian habitats in old field shrublands of northwestern Arkansas were analyzed.
Status Of The Ozark Hellbender, Cryptobranchus Bishopi (Urodela: Cryptobranchidae), In The Spring River, Fulton County, Arkansas, Stanley E. Trauth, J. D. Wilhide, Patrick Daniel
Status Of The Ozark Hellbender, Cryptobranchus Bishopi (Urodela: Cryptobranchidae), In The Spring River, Fulton County, Arkansas, Stanley E. Trauth, J. D. Wilhide, Patrick Daniel
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
We conducted a tag and release study of the Ozark hellbender along a 26 km stretch of the Spring River from mid-July through mid-November, 1991, to determine current population levels. Salamanders were collected by hand with the aid of scuba diving equipment. Thirteen visits(36 dive hrs.) to10 selected access sites yielded 20 animals. Compared to previously published data of the early 1980's which indicated large, striving populations of C. bishopi(in some cases, > 300 individuals) in the Spring River, our study found perilously low numbers of salamanders. This drastic decline may be attributed to over collection of specimens for scientific or …
Biological Vectors For The Dispersal Of Colletotrichum Gloeosporioides, X. B. Yang, D. O. Tebeest, E. L. Moore
Biological Vectors For The Dispersal Of Colletotrichum Gloeosporioides, X. B. Yang, D. O. Tebeest, E. L. Moore
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Green treefrogs (Hyla cinerea) and grasshoppers (Melanoplus differentialis and Conocephalus fasciatus) commonly observed in Arkansas rice fields, are dispersal vectors for Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f. sp. aeschynomens, a causal agent of anthracnose of northern jointvetch. Treefrogs and grasshoppers captured from rice or soybean fields with diseased northern jointvetch were placed in containers in contact with healthy northern jointvetch plants. An average of 90% of northern jointvetch plants was infected by the pathogen with up to 10 lesions per plant using treefrog vectors. Experiments were done in the greenhouse on frog dispersal by monitoring disease development from a point source in closed …

Eleven New Species Of Free-Living Marine Nematodes, Edwin J. Keppner
Gulf and Caribbean Research
The genus Halalaimus is reviewed and divided into four groups based on characters of the male. Characters used to separate the groups of males include presence or absence of caudal algae and the presence or absence of a precloacal sensillum and/or pore. Ten new species are described from St. Andrew Bay, Bay County, Florida, and H. gerlachi n. sp. is proposed for H. gracilis sensu GerIach, 1967. New species from St. Andrew Bay are H. thalassinus, H. tarjani, H. bayensis, H. bulbocaudatus, H. variabilis, H. paracomatus, H. americanus, H. floridanus, H. brimi, …
