River cross-sections are often extracted using field surveys at measured intervals. This field-oriented approach allows for a tangible relationship between the data and its collector but at the expense of finance, time, labor, and potentially the environment. Background: COVID-19 became international news in December 2019 and subsequently impacted global health. The research shows that the Diné people of the Navajo Nation were one of the most severely impacted populations¹. The Navajo Nation is a region spanning Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah that is composed of North American indigenous people known as the Diné. Urban settings face unprecedented environmental challenges that include legacy issues as well as emerging pollution problems (e.g., micro-plastics) that continually impact the public health of its communities. Determining the baseline abundances of potentially harmful contaminants in soil, sediment, air, and water is essential to protecting residents. This study examines anthropogenic pollution in street sediments collected from three neighborhoods located in northeast Terre Haute, Indiana. Using stereomicroscopy, SEM/EDS, pXRF analyses, and geospatial analysis (GIS), the goal of this work is to characterize the types of pollutants present and place important constraints on their potential sources.

Aquatic invasive species have detrimental effects on the ecosystems of the Northeastern United States and Canada. Characterizing the patterns of invasion for aquatic invasive species can be important for making local management decisions to control them. We focused onNajas minor(Brittle Waternymph),Hydrilla verticillata(Hydrilla), andNitellopsis obtusa(Starry Stonewort). Wildfires are natural or anthropogenic disturbances that can change the structure of ecosystems. Although plant resilience and recovery have been studied extensively in fire-dependent ecosystems, impacts on mammal and herpetological activity in temperate deciduous forests are an understudied facet of wildfire disturbance. This study aims to investigate the aftermath of the recent Matt’s Creek wildfire on mammal, amphibian, and reptile diversity by employing trail cameras and conducting opportunistic field surveys. Academic libraries frequently offer workshops to graduate students and faculty as a way to develop their information literacy skills, including building skills with citation managers, literature review searching, and data management. In many academic libraries in-person delivery of workshops was the norm prior to the COVID-19 global pandemic, but during the pandemic online workshops were the only option. Workshop participants now appreciate being able to choose between the modality that works for them. In our library, we now regularly offer most workshops in both in-person and synchronous online modalities. This change in how we offer workshops allows us the opportunity …

To determine appropriate forage species for US ecoregions, geographic information technologies (GIS) are being used to create climatic and soil factor maps. Excel spreadsheets and RStudio are used to create response functions of forage species to minimum and maximum temperature, annual precipitation, soil pH, soil salinity, and salinity. National forage data and expert opinion will evaluate quantitative tolerances, seasonal yield profiles, and pollinator suitability. These maps and agronomic and livestock use information will be shared with forage specialists and farmers to provide alternatives for improved perenniality, increased diversity, and system circularity. On October 1, 1962, James Meredith made history as the first African-American student to be admitted to the then racially segregated University of Mississippi. In the weeks before and after his admission, Meredith received thousands of letters from around the world expressing support or condemnation of his actions. Carbon-Nitrogen Ratios In Rangeland Soils In Various Agriculture Response Units In Three Watersheds In The Central Himalayas, India, Nanda Nautiyal, Vir Singh

CN ratios of rangeland soils in selected agriculture response units (ARUs) prevailing in three watersheds, Kosi, Alaknanda, and Pindar, in the Indian Central Himalayan mountains were analyzed. The ratios varied significantly (P<0.05) with ARUs and seasons. Interaction between ARUs and season was also found significant (P<0.05). In Alaknanda Watershed soil CN ratios ranged from 6.62 to 20.58. Soil CN ratio values differed significantly (P<0.05) with seasons and ARUs. Soil CN ratios in the rangelands of Pindar Watershed were recorded between 6.54 and 11.29. The ratios varied significantly (P<0.05) in seasons and ARUs. Interaction between ARUs and season was also found significant (P<0.05). Rangeland soil CN ratio values of all ARUs were further statistically analyzed in all three watersheds. Minimum soil CN ratios were seen at Pindar and maximum at Alaknanda watershed. The ratios variation was seen in all the rangelands and it was found significant at a significance level of 5%. Interaction between Kosi and Alaknanda was found non-significant while between Kosi and Pindar and Alaknanda and Pindar it was significant (P<0.05) throughout the study. Variation in soil CN ratios in both agricultural and rangeland soils was seen in each watershed. In the Kosi watershed, soil CN ratios ranged from 6.74 to 15.06; in Alaknanda from 6.36 to 20.58 and in Pindar from 5.75 to 14.38. CN ratios have an absolute relationship with temperature and are higher when higher rainfall occurs and moisture prevails. The ratios also impact soil acidity and other soil quality parameters.

Rapid urbanization has resulted in widespread loss of cropland, but the spatial-temporal patterns and key stages of this transformation have not been clearly understood. In this study, we mapped cropland loss caused by urban expansion in rural-urban continuum since 2000 based on multiple global land maps. Results show a total 3.35 × 106 ha cropland loss resulting from urban expansion and about 70 % of this land use change occurred in Asia. They can also have unintended consequences, including inducing new sustainability stresses or threatening food security. It is important to understand these effects when designing sustainability policies. This paper provides prominent examples of market-mediated effects of a variety of sustainability policies in the food, energy, land and water nexus.
