Sarah Bartman And Demystifying African Women History: Feminist Engagement And New Epistemologies From Africa, Babere Kerata Chacha
Sarah Bartman And Demystifying African Women History: Feminist Engagement And New Epistemologies From Africa, Babere Kerata Chacha
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
I was recently awarded a Sarah Bartman fellowhip by the University of Cape Town and in my inaugural lecture, I posed a critical question. How should we commemorate Sarah Bartmann legacy in history and culture in contemporary Africa? It is important to make our students to understand the history of sexism and oppression and the many barriers and biases that women have historically faced. Historical interpretation of, or representations of women as victims, projecting victimhood onto meta-historical narratives allows for imagining the trajectories of communities along a ‘zigzag’ historical timeline, wherein the present is portrayed as a juncture similar to …

Social Capital And Gambling Risk Perception 'A Social Marketing Dilemma', Otila Osborne, Maree Thyne, Kirsten Robertson, Janet Davey
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
AIM: To explore the relationship between social capital (social networks, familial and close relationships) and risk perception amongst older female gamblers (50 years+)
BACKGROUND: Despite significant investment in social marketing initiatives gambling harms persist. Predicted to live longer, poorer, and less healthy lives than men, older women are increasingly gambling online with gambling harms rising accordingly. Typically, older women are portrayed as being risk averse. However recent studies across several jurisdictions reveal significant shifts in risk perception in the domain of social risk. Yet little is known about how older women perceive gambling risk. This study provides an alternative to …

Creating a new sports division: The importance of protecting women’s sports while encouraging sportsmanlike competition
The foundation of sports is to encourage respectful and fair competition between two or more individuals. For those who choose to participate, they are pursuing the happiness they find in competition, others have found their livelihood in sports, and most find liberty in their carefree activities.
Given the recent rise in the popularity of the transgender community, it is natural for members that want to compete in sports, specifically women’s sports. However, with that there are also those who would abuse this popularity to support …

Maldi-Tof Ms Based Proteomic Fingerprinting Of Total Serum Plasma For Somatic Pain Syndromes, Isaiah Pinkerton, Venkateswar Venkataraman
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
There are racial and ethnic disparities regarding pain management within the United States, and that disproportionately affects women of color. There is also a fundamental lack of information regarding the biological mechanism by which pain sensitization and perception occurs, and how it could be affected by both neurologic and somatic pain syndromes.
Methods: Research was performed on principal electronic scientific databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, and Embase with search terms “MALDI-TOF”, “ESI-MS”, “Pain”, and “Biomarkers”, as well as other modifiers to narrow the literature search.
Results: Studies on comparison between MALDI-TOF and other traditional analysis platforms, including Electrospray Ionization (ESI-MS), …

Women In Politics; The Soong Sisters And Chinese History In The 20th Century, Cera Linnell
Student Symposium
This research focuses on the Soong sisters in the twentieth century in order to analyze women’s impact on politics in China. Women’s contributions are often overlooked, leading to a lack of women’s stories in historical narratives. It identifies that to produce a less biased historical narrative there needs to be more diversity within the historiographers and the narratives portrayed. The research provides solutions to combating the existing biases present in historical narratives and an attempt to apply them through an analysis of the lives of the Soong sisters. The sisters Ai-ling, Qing-ling, and Mei-ling were the wives of powerful men …

Maria: A Game Concept On The Perception Of The Filipino Voting Youth Towards Women In Politics, Mehriell Ellice S. Ang
DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
Over the years, the Philippines prides itself on being one of the most gender-equal countries in the world. Despite this, female participation within the realm of politics remain below the critical mass of representation—often attributed to androcentric biases and the patriarchal structure of society. In this modern age, with the proliferation of feminist ideologies as well as the rise of publicly misogynistic sentiments, the general stance of the young Gen Zs towards women’s participation in politics remains a mystery, as many of them continue to become part of the eligible voter population of the country. This paper then aims to …

Being A Stem Woman In Kosovo, Aferina Skeja, Nora Sadiku Dushi, Gülay Keskin
UBT International Conference
Although it is difficult to accept, even in this time of civilization that we live in, women across the world face various difficulties as individuals. Male dominance in most fields makes it impossible to avoid gender discrimination. Gender discrimination all over the world is a huge drawback for women in almost every field. This phenomenon is even more prominent in business life and especially in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). In this globalized world, Kosovar women may not be an exception. Therefore, this research aims to examine whether women who work or have worked in STEM fields in Kosovo …
The Role Of Women In Rural Livestock: Which Women? Which Livestock?, Gabriela Litre, Daniela Nogueira, Alessandra Matte, Virginia Courdin
The Role Of Women In Rural Livestock: Which Women? Which Livestock?, Gabriela Litre, Daniela Nogueira, Alessandra Matte, Virginia Courdin
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
We explore the conceptual and empirical limitations of the question about “the role of women in rural livestock production” as well as the widespread assumption that women in livestock are subsistence or smallholder farmers. While this is correct in many situations, “essentialist” development discourses often disregard new demographic trends and the heterogeneity of live-stock production systems. Our research, which focuses on the livelihoods of women involved with livestock production in the Pampas’ grasslands of Brazil, proposes: 1) to critically analyse some of the most widely spread assumptions about women involved in beef livestock production, including the belief that women are …
Women’S Empowerment For Demographic Issues And Conflicts In African Pastoralist Societies, M. R. Cevallos, P. Manzano
Women’S Empowerment For Demographic Issues And Conflicts In African Pastoralist Societies, M. R. Cevallos, P. Manzano
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
Widespread conflict is a recurring issue in African pastoralist societies. While its roots are debated, there is a missing link with prevailing poverty among communities and particularly among women. We here apply a gender perspective to establish a hypothesis on the role of women in pastoralist conflicts.
The existing polygynic system establishes a violent frame for pastoralist women, who would be sold at increasingly early ages to provide in turn enough resources for furnishing the dowry needed by their brothers. The control on them would thereby be transferred from their own families to their husband and his family, where they …

The primary purpose of this integrative literature review is to explore the relationship between culture and femicide within Turkey to empower action against femicide. Femicides within Turkey are on the rise, as a study done by Sage Journals in 2009 reported that 42% of Turkish women between the ages of 15 and 60 experienced some form of physical or sexual abuse from their husband or partner. Currently, there has been an onslaught of articles released that more and more women are being abused throughout the country during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research will explore cultural aspects that allow for women’s …

New Media And Gender Inequality During Political Campaigns In Kosovo, Gjylie Rexha
UBT International Conference
Political parties in Kosovo randomly adhere to legal obligations to quotas for women in parliament. But, during campaigns, female candidates do not appear as leaders in debates and political activities. This paper focuses the campaign for parliamentary election in 2019. We have monitored the stories about campaign in three online media, presented on their Face book pages. The results obtained from the content analyses argue that women are presented only as integral part of the political parties’ lists and electoral activities. Consequently, during political campaigns, they are under presented within the parties and in media coverage.
Equality In Education For Latina Women, Megan Warburton
Equality In Education For Latina Women, Megan Warburton
Student Research Symposium
Latina women in the United States face various educational, social, and familial pressures while striving to obtain a valuable education and break boundaries created by stereotypes in the country. Stereotypes of Latinas in the media have created false beliefs regarding their characters and abilities, in turn causing negative repercussions in communities and social environments. They often face unfair and biased treatment in schools and don’t receive adequate help from teachers or counselors to excel in high school and prepare for college. Much of this inequality inhibits their ability to feel confident in their future of education. Not only must Latina …

The Segregation Of Religion: How Othering Influences Society’S Narrative Understanding About The Symbiotic Relationship Among Racism, Sexism, And The Church, Ajanet Rountree
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
The social dependence on the sociology of male spiritual leadership is substantial. This dependence accomplishes two ideas: neutralizes the feminine experience and obviates the anthropological implications of religion in the perpetuation of oppression and subjugation. When considering racism and sexism in religion, specifically as they relate to the Black Christian church, a dismissal of accusations and assertions occurs by yielding to the context of the social era. This paper seeks to further clarify the position of women, who pushed against the grain of the gendered and racialized spaces of their churches and communities, as they sought to establish human rights …
Snakes, Magic, And Venom: The Power Of A Woman Unbound, Stephen Lazar
Snakes, Magic, And Venom: The Power Of A Woman Unbound, Stephen Lazar
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
The venomous, serpentine imagery used referencing women in ancient Greek tragedies reflects on man’s conscious awareness of a woman’s strength, both internally and externally, as well as his reason for attempting to suppress this power. Clytemnestra from Aeschylus’ Oresteia is a paradigm representation of this, being referred to as “some water snake, some viper whose touch is rot even to him who felt no fang strike.” The etymology behind these words shed some light on the intense feminine detriment that they hold: viper, specifically being a viviparous snake, referring to a female snake with the duty to produce offspring; venomous, …

Breaking Through The Sexed Glass Ceiling: Women In Academic Leadership Positions, Sheila Smith Mckoy, Dawn Michelle Banauch, Keisha Love, Susan Kirkpatrick Smith
Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings
In 2009, Patterson, Kirschke, Seaton and Hossfeld revisited the ongoing conversation about gender inequity and inequality in higher education. Their work entitled Challenges for Women Department Chairs (New Prairie Press, 2009) focused on the numerous gaps – salary, promotion, discrimination, harassment -- that define women’s experiences in academic leadership. The emerging trends in academia still suggest that the work that they started in 2009 continues to be a vital concern for women in academic leadership positions. Very little research exists in relation to the intersectional conversations that need to occur when these gendered gaps are coupled with other aspects of …

Agency, Equality And Courage: A Case Study Of Women On The Front Lines Of Egypt’S 2011 Revolution, Carol Gray
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
How were women involved in Egypt’s 2011 revolution/uprising? What role did they play vis-à-vis male activists? To what degree were Egyptian women “equal” during those 18 days in Tahrir Square? These questions will be explored within the context of interviews conducted by this writer in Cairo during and following Egypt’s 18-day revolution (uprising). This essay will explore the public/private sphere split, political consciousness-raising, and gender equality within the context of the stories of Egyptian women on the front lines of protest.
Much of the recent literature on women's protests in Egypt has focused on women's victimization. Critical gender theorist Ann …

The goal of this presentation is to conduct research and educate others about the women’s right violations experienced by incarcerated women. We are proposing to address three specific women’s right violations present within American, Russian, and Brazilian correctional facilities. We chose these countries because, according to research, the US, Russia, and Brazil are among the top five countries with the highest number of female inmates. First, we will discuss world statistics about female incarceration and general information about female penitentiaries in the US, Russia, and Brazil. Second, we will discuss physical and sexual abuse present within these correctional facilities. Third, …

Meeting The Unique Treatment Needs Of Female Gamblers: A Workbook And Webinar Effectiveness Pilot Study, Roberta R. Boughton, Farah Jindani, Nigel Turner
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
While past decades have seen a dramatic increase in the number of women who gamble and develop consequent problems, treatment services are being underutilized in Ontario, especially by women.
This pilot aimed to be responsive to this concern, circumventing barriers by inviting access to support through the use of two interventions. One was a mailed self-help workbook designed for women. The second utilized the workbook in a clinician facilitated group context using teleconferencing in conjunction with webinar technology. This small pragmatic pilot aimed to both get feedback on the helpfulness of the workbook and to explore the feasibility of using …
