Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Is Information Literacy (IL) a discipline in itself? How does that situate with our current climate of AI in the information ecology?

The presentation will focus on the rationale for recognizing IL as a discipline, and the inquiry of IL as a Discipline in the age of AI. In the session, we will explore the opportunities afforded by recognizing information literacy as a discipline. Participants will be able to share their ideas of what would be included in an IL curriculum or research inquiry situated in the AI information ecology via an online question-and-answer platform inviting small discussions and an …

Teaching Students To Read Regression Results: A Statistical Literacy Lesson Plan For Librarians, Giovanna Badia Mar 2024

Teaching Students To Read Regression Results: A Statistical Literacy Lesson Plan For Librarians, Giovanna Badia

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Descriptive and inferential statistics are taught to students in many disciplines. More classroom time is often spent on the theory behind different statistical methods that investigate relationships between variables rather than on how to interpret the results obtained to answer the research question that started the process. While statistical software (such as R, Stata, and SPSS) has made it easier to undertake regression with any dataset, the output produced remains challenging to understand and explain to intended audiences. To address this issue, the author created a 90-minute workshop that teaches students how to read tables of descriptive statistics and linear …

A University Course On Management Intensive Grazing, D. L. Zartman Aug 2023

A University Course On Management Intensive Grazing, D. L. Zartman

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Education of new talent in good grassland management is important. Farmer-oriented extension- and outreach- programs do this, but USA university curricula rarely include it. Some livestock production courses contain a segment on grazing management, but there seem to be no credit-bearing, formal courses in USA universities except in the Ohio State University (OSU). Our course teaches management of intensive grazing (MIG) for three credit hours in a quarter system. It has been a popular elective course for the past 6 years. Every year that they have entered, OSU students have won all prizes in the 18-22 age division in the …

An Interactive, Web-Based Module To Teach The Principles Of Silage Fermentation, M. H. Hall Aug 2023

An Interactive, Web-Based Module To Teach The Principles Of Silage Fermentation, M. H. Hall

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The forage-livestock industry represents a major agricultural enterprise throughout the world. In the United States, forages comprise 40-60% of the dairy cow's diet with many producers feeding 50-100% of this forage as silage (Kempisty, 1997). Harvesting forages as silage continues to increase as the size of farms increase and the mechanisation of silage harvesting allows timely harvest of a greater area. There are many factors that affect the quality of silage and producers need to better understand these factors to optimise their silage making process. Our objective was to develop a web-based learning module to help users better understand the …

Bedside Teaching In Emergency Medicine Brief Review And Practical Suggestions, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna, Frank Wheeler, Sergey Medlenov, Robin Lahr, James Lee

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Bedside teaching has been a tradtional practice and value in medicine. There is literature attesting the positive role of bedside teaching in medicine in general---and in emergency medicine in particular. The value proposition is centered around teaching overall clinical skills, communication skills and procedural skills. There is very little actual data concerning the outcomes of various bedside teaching approaches in EM. There are a number of very interesting suggestions In this review, we will discuss practical strategies to support bedside teaching in the speciality of emergency medicine.

Teaching Psychology In V2: To Stream Or Not To Stream, That Is The Question, Andrew L. Vincent Mr. Aug 2022

Teaching Psychology In V2: To Stream Or Not To Stream, That Is The Question, Andrew L. Vincent Mr.

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

University education has historically occurred in face-to-face settings such as the traditional campus lecture hall. However, university teaching has increasingly been instructed online, especially since the recent lockdowns that took place during the COVID19 pandemic. During the pandemic period, many post-secondary institutions took to online teaching formats which often included asynchronous lessons provided by pre-recorded video or synchronous lessons conducted over video conferencing software. Unfortunately, online courses potentially limit the amount of communication possible between student and professor and therefore the engagement between the two may have been limited. Due to this, concerns have been expressed that students may feel …

New Librarianship Symposia Series: Fall 2021

Proposal Abstract: A New Normal Agenda in a COVID-Affected World

During the COVID-19 pandemic, libraries became a vital community support hub for information and broadband access. In March 2020 as K-12 schools and universities shifted to all-online classes, librarians taught people to use technologies, provided wireless hubs for classes and homework to those lacking home broadband digital access, and offered distance education test proctoring as well as online books, articles and databases. People sought information about sewing masks and making homemade hand sanitizer, and some library makerspaces 3-D printed face shields. Libraries partnered in health efforts to distribute free masks, …

Experiencing Sustainable Fashion: Have Fun And Feel Clever – A Case Study For Critical Design Literacy, Hanna Hofverberg, Ninitha Maivorsdotter

Learn X Design Conference Series

Clothes consumerism is increasing every year, which is a huge challenge for sustainability. Educa-tional Design research have shown that the challenge cannot be solved unless we have critical literate consumers. By making the question of sustainable clothing a matter for critical design lit-eracy, the aim of this case study is to examine the meaning making of an educational material produced for teachers in design and craft education. The educational material, entitled Sustaina-ble Fashion, consists of 17 design projects and the analysis is made with the aid of practical epis-temological analysis with a specific focus on aesthetic experience. Two ways of …

Envisioning Large-Scale Effects Of Teaching Values In Design, Anne Linda Kok, Eva Eriksson, Elisabet Nilsson Aug 2021

Envisioning Large-Scale Effects Of Teaching Values In Design, Anne Linda Kok, Eva Eriksson, Elisabet Nilsson

Nordes Conference Series

In teaching, there is an increased awareness about the role that values play in design. In this paper, we envision potential large-scale effects of teaching values in design in higher education. In doing so, we practice what we preach, as we ourselves perform the envisioning method we normally teach our students. By applying this method to our teaching, we are scaling up the definition of “learning outcomes” from classroom-level results to societal outcomes. Specifically, we envision these potential outcomes by creating value scenarios on the basis of four topics – stakeholders, time, values, and pervasiveness. The contribution of this paper …

Teaching At Home: Exploring The Relationship Between Reflective Functioning And Teaching Practices In Preschoolers’ Caregivers, Minah Nguyen Apr 2021

Teaching At Home: Exploring The Relationship Between Reflective Functioning And Teaching Practices In Preschoolers’ Caregivers, Minah Nguyen

Student Research Symposium

The act of teaching, although seemingly commonplace, is often more complex than it appears. Teaching requires an understanding of the learner’s thinking to best support progress and development (Ball & Forzani, 2009). Research increasingly points to the role of parents and informal environments in fostering young children’s learning (Crowley et al., 2001; Tamis-LeMonda & Rodriguez, 2008). While these types of research have outlined steps parents can take, none have explored the extent to which parents are thinking about their child’s understanding. Similarly, parental reflective functioning (PRF), defined as parents’ ability to understand their child’s mental state, has been extensively studied …

The Importance Of Digital Skills In Education In The Covid-19 Era, Alma V. Lama

UBT International Conference

Education is a fundamental right and we have to make sure we hold on to it despite any crisis and beyond. Just like in all the world, Kosovo has been affected by the pandemic COVID -19 in March 2020. The pandemic situation has changed how things function and it looks like this is going to be a new normal. As a result of it, all industries including the educational institutions, those private and public, had to reimagine how to switch into online performance and computer-based learning. Online learning has served as a lever to continue with education in an online …

The Impact Of Teacher Methodology Training For Higher Education Faculty Members, Nicole R. Baker Apr 2020

The Impact Of Teacher Methodology Training For Higher Education Faculty Members, Nicole R. Baker

Scholar Week 2016 - present

Many college programs are designed to graduate individuals who are experts in their field of study, but not necessarily individuals who are trained in how to teach. This quantitative, quasi-experiment study examined college faculty member’s level of training in the area of teaching practices and methodology. The relation to student satisfaction, current course performance, attendance, the belief in the need for training, and faculty member’s sense of efficacy in teaching was explored. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to organize the data using a one-way ANCOVA to analyze the impact the level of training had on …

Gender Bias And Race Bias In Student Evaluations Of Teaching, Megan Boyce, Audree Britte Apr 2020

Gender Bias And Race Bias In Student Evaluations Of Teaching, Megan Boyce, Audree Britte

Student Research Symposium

There is mixed evidence regarding the presence of gender bias in student evaluations of teaching (Foote, Harmon, & Mayo, 2003; Morgan et al., 2016). Given the importance placed on student evaluations of teaching in regards to promotion and tenure, it is essential to determine whether gender bias is present and to what extent (Laube, Massoni, Sprague, & Ferber, 2007). Many previous studies have shown there is strong evidence of implicit bias in the traits we expect to see from female and male professors, but these studies have been limited by how they identify the presence of bias (e.g. Basow, 1995; …

Misconceptions About Young Children Proven Wrong Through Research, Chloe Bush Apr 2019

Misconceptions About Young Children Proven Wrong Through Research, Chloe Bush

Student Symposium

Through research, teachers can learn about the best pedagogies to authentically teach students content in a holistic way. A teacher's job is to teach content-area subjects such as science and social studies, that aligns with learning goals the teacher aims for children to understand. With English language arts and mathematics often being the main focuses in most elementary classrooms, science and social studies can get pushed aside. Because these subjects typically aren’t given equal time, adults outside of education may hold misconceptions about children’s ability to learn these two content-area subjects. Misconceptions can occur when adults do not understand what …
