Mathematically Modeling How Trapping Regimes That Target Specific Crayfish Life Stages Impact Removal Efficacy, Rini Pattison
Mathematically Modeling How Trapping Regimes That Target Specific Crayfish Life Stages Impact Removal Efficacy, Rini Pattison
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
The red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, is an invasive species introduced into several streams within the Santa Monica Mountains (SMM) in Southern California. Crayfish predation decimates native aquatic species. Thus, the Mountains Restoration Trust (MRT) and Environmental Restoration Group have worked to remove crayfish through regular trapping in Malibu Creek.
To aid conservation efforts, former SURB students William Milligan and Dev Patel developed mathematical models of crayfish removal efficacy. Milligan created a differential equation model of how crayfish removal affects local newt populations. Patel expanded Milligan’s crayfish model by creating a discrete model of the crayfish life cycle that newly …
Bringing Learning Progressions Down To 2-Year-Olds In Reading And Mathematics, Prue Anderson
Bringing Learning Progressions Down To 2-Year-Olds In Reading And Mathematics, Prue Anderson
2021-2030 ACER Research Conferences
ACER’s learning progressions in reading and mathematics describe growth that is mainly focused on skills students demonstrate at and beyond school. These progressions have recently been extended down to describe earlier levels of growth so we now have seamless progressions from skills and understandings toddlers might demonstrate up to highly sophisticated skills and concepts. This presentation briefly outlines ACER’s work and identifies key implications for educators. The pathways that support early reading development were described in progressions for listening comprehension and sounds and letters. Along with an early mathematics progression, these were conceptualised as embedded in an oral language progression. …

Research Conference 2023: Becoming Lifelong Learners. Proceedings And Program, Kylie Burns (Ed.)
2021-2030 ACER Research Conferences
We know learning in the early years sets the foundations for people’s ongoing academic, cognitive and socio-emotional development. Education across those formative first 12 years is currently segmented, with children often starting fresh in new systems. How can each of us make learning in the early childhood and primary years more effective? Research Conference 2023 will examine research around how we can improve the continuity of learning from birth to 12 years. It will bring together leading international and Australian researchers to provide insights into the best ways to identify, conceptualise, develop and assess these new linkages for learning.
Digital Game-Based Approach To Math Learning For Students, Gul Ayaz, Katherine Smith
Digital Game-Based Approach To Math Learning For Students, Gul Ayaz, Katherine Smith
Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
Mathematics is an important subject that is pervasive across many disciplines. It is also a subject that has proven to be challenging to both teach and learn. Students face many challenges with learning math such as a lack of motivation and anxiety. To address these challenges, game-based learning has become a popular approach to stimulate students and create a more positive classroom environment. It can serve as an alternative or supplement to traditional teaching and can better engage students while developing a positive attitude toward learning. The use of games in a classroom can create a more exciting and engaging …

Optimizing Forest Harvest Cycles For Carbon Sequestration, Alex Landry, Margaret Lippsmeyer, Casey Wong
Optimizing Forest Harvest Cycles For Carbon Sequestration, Alex Landry, Margaret Lippsmeyer, Casey Wong
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Our mathematical model aims to depict optimal harvest times for different types of forests based on the value they provide for carbon sequestration. We have developed three different models for the main forest types throughout the world, boreal forests, temperate forests, and tropical forests. For the model, we implemented a manipulated sine function for one period. By using a manipulated sine function, we are able to model the amount of carbon dioxide a tree is able to sequester over its lifetime as well as show the release of carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere when the tree dies and decomposes …

Optimal Race Strategies For Cyclists, Brendan Perez, Drew Altringer, Evan Fisette
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
For competitive cyclists, each course presents a unique set of factors and, in turn, leads to difficulty in choosing a racing strategy. Some courses confront cyclists with drastic changes in elevation while others are of a more consistent grade. Similarly, curvature varies from course to course.
Further, riders vary in their areas of strength. A rider’s power curve maps their instantaneous power output 𝑃 in W/kg over the amount of time that the rider can sustain that power level in seconds. The shape of a rider’s power curve indicates their riding style.
In this paper, we model the optimal …

Interrelation Of Mathematics Within The Stem, Duli Pllana
UBT International Conference
Methodically inspecting mathematics in STEM educational programs participates with a percentage of twenty five percent. Interaction of mathematics in science, technology, and engineering is inevitable. Science, technology, and engineering acquire tools of mathematics to observe, describe and predict natural phenomena. Science pays a huge attention to natural phenomena that surrounds us; in addition, mathematics comes up with the structures and logical relationships to its scope. Technology uses mathematics extensively; in general, mathematics is a powerful tool to find any solution in technology. Engineering is based on scientific concepts to sketch, plan, or design a construction. Engineering uses mathematics throughout any …

In this paper, we take a look at how drones can be used to efficiently help out with the communication between firefighters on the front line of wildfires with the operations center. We also take a look at how drones can also be used to survey the land, and how the wildfire is changing, to further instruct the operations center on how to most effectively disperse firefighters to control the fire. We look at the optimal positions for the drone placement in order to stay in signal range while also covering the most area possible. Using actual data from bushfires …
Tilings Of Modified Rectangles By Ribbon-Tile Pentominoes, Elizabeth Thompson
Tilings Of Modified Rectangles By Ribbon-Tile Pentominoes, Elizabeth Thompson
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Which dimensions of a and b satisfy tilings of modified rectangles by ribbon tile pentominoes? We answer this question using tile invariants developed in prior research on the mathematics of tiling, as well as the use of inductive lemmas. The set of tiles we use for this study are height-1 ribbon tile pentominoes, which we later define. Modified rectangles are a-by-b rectangles with height a and width b, and the additional feature that the top left and bottom right squares are removed.
What Can I Do About It? Teaching Behaviors That Strengthen Students' Mathematical Identities, Sandra Miles
What Can I Do About It? Teaching Behaviors That Strengthen Students' Mathematical Identities, Sandra Miles
Student Research Symposium
As test scores place US teenagers lower down on the list of developed countries in mathematics achievement, scholars seek to understand what is keeping students from engaging more deeply and successfully in mathematics. Though many affective and motivational factors contribute to future mathematics engagement, mathematics self-concept has been shown to be a consistent predictor of long-term outcomes (Marsh et al., 2019), especially when affective or emotional outcomes are considered (Huang, 2012). This paper examines the construct of mathematical self-concept through analysis of the mathematical identity variable in the High School Longitudinal Survey (2009), and investigates whether teacher behaviors, such as …
