Introduction

Food insecurity is a prevalent problem in the United States that affects the livelihoods of many individuals and families. Food security is defined as “a situation that exists when all people, at all times, have physical and social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy lifestyle.” (Committee on World Food Security (CFS), 2012). The purpose of this systematic review is to compare food insecurity and its effects on mental health, physical health, and academics, prior to the start of the pandemic and after stay-at-home …

Researchers posed the question: “What is the relationship between caregiving responsibilities and emotional wellbeing of teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic among public school teachers in Maine?” Participants from K-12 public schools around the state were recruited through direct contact or via building administrators who distributed …

Covid-19 Immunization In Refugees And Migrants: Principles And Key Considerations: Interim Guidance, World Health Organization

Security Research Hub Reports

Although everyone is affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact is not shared equally. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities and exacerbated existing inequalities within and between low- and high-income countries. These inequalities have had the biggest impact on the poorest and most vulnerable people, which may include refugees and migrants (particularly those in irregular situations). These groups often have vulnerabilities that are heightened by this pandemic. On 31 August 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) has published an Interim Guidance entitled COVID-19 immunization in refugees and migrants: principles and key considerations. This document, which draws on a recent WHO …

Relationship Satisfaction & Diet: Exploring The Mechanisms Through Which Intimate Relationships Influence Physical Health, Lindsey Robinson, Dylan Hillock, Dr. Josh Novak

Southeastern Council on Family Relations Conference

Understanding how intimate relationships influence physical health has been an important topic of focus; however, research remains unclear on the mechanisms through which this influence occurs. The purpose of this study was to examine how relationship satisfaction relates to diet quality, through mental health (depression and anxiety) and diet self-efficacy. Using a dyadic mediation model with a sample of 234 heterosexual couples, researchers found that women's higher relationship satisfaction was associated with better diet through lower depression and higher diet self-efficacy. Results revealed the same association between women's relationship satisfaction and diet through lower anxiety. Interestingly, rather than mediation through …

Security Research Hub Reports

"Since the start of the 21st Century, the CLA region has faced considerable challenges, including prolonged droughts with intermittent and extreme floods due to climate change; violence and political instability linked to the drug trade; political, socioeconomic, and food insecurity from agricultural declines; human displacements; urbanization; and even the marginalization of large indigenous populations [2, 3]. Here, we provide an overview of the findings from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study from the years 2000 and 2017 highlighting the gains or losses in neglected tropical disease (NTD) and malaria disease control in the CLA countries and progress towards the …

Addressing Health Inequalities In Latin America: The Role Of Social Protection, Lais Abramo, Simone Cecchini, Heidi Ullmann

Security Research Hub Reports

"After more than a decade of progress in various areas of social development, since 2015 poverty has increased, labor market indicators have deteriorated, and the reduction of income inequality has stagnated in Latin America. These trends are of concern as they can affect health indicators and exacerbate profound health inequalities. This situation demands integrated policy responses that can create synergies between different sectors. There is growing recognition of the role of social protection in the eradication of poverty and the reduction of inequality. Various social protection mechanisms buffer against the costs of accessing health services directly and indirectly. By expanding …

Unveiling The Mask:Sexual Trauma's Impact On Academic Achievement, Behavior, And Self-Identity, Teshaunda Hannor-Walker, Sarah Kitchens, Lacey Ricks

National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference

Sexual trauma is an unfortunate but a common and often masked experience for many students in America. While sexual trauma in itself is not a mental health disorder, it can become a risk factor for many academic and mental health problems. Trauma-informed schools can play an important role in helping students deal with the aftercare of a traumatic experience.

Mortality In Rohingya Refugee Camps In Bangladesh: Historical, Social, And Political Context, Parveen K. Parmar, Rowen O. Jin, Meredith Walsh, Jennifer Scott

Security Research Hub Reports

Fifty-two maternal deaths occurred between September 2017 and August 2018 in the Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhia and Teknaf Upazilas, Cox's Bazar District, Bangladesh. Behind every one of these lives lost is a complex narrative of historical, social, and political forces, which provide an important context for reproductive health programming in Rohingya camps. Rohingya women and girls have experienced human rights violations in Myanmar for decades, including government-sponsored sexual violence and population control efforts. An extension of nationalist, anti-Rohingya policies, the attacks of 2017 resulted in the rape and murder of an unknown number of women. The socio-cultural context among …

Needle Return In Needle Exchange Programs, Stephanie Spaulding

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Needle Return in Needle Exchange Programs

The first NEP (Needle Exchange Program) was in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1984, followed four years later by the first U.S. NEP in 1988 in Tacoma, Washington (The Center for Innovative Public Policies, 2012). NEPs have been shown to reduce risk of disease, and prior studies suggest that individuals who participate in such programs are more likely to enter recovery from opioid addiction, making them an important public health intervention. The worldwide average for needle return in NEPs is around 90% (Ksobiech, 2004). With the needle return rate in Huntington being around 60%-70%, it is …

This study seeks to explore the effect of these factors on early sexual initiation.

Methods

A sample of college students taking the introductory psychology course participated in the study through the ETSU SONA system. They completed a self-reported web-based …

Human body lice have been long known to vector several human pathogens, including Rickettsia prowazekii, Bartonella quintana, and Borrelia recurrentis. In contrast, human head lice are not typically associated with carriage of any pathogens, despite sporadic findings of B. quintana and Acinetobacter baumannii in lice collected from homeless people and children in different parts of the world. The purpose of this project is to assess the prevalence of A. baumannii in human head lice collected from school children from Georgia, USA. Methodology and Data: DNA of A. baumannii …

Family-Farm Therapy: An Urban Therapy Clinic To Address The Multifaceted Needs Of Multi-Stressed Families And Their Surrounding Communities, Felisa M. Huene

Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)

Family-Farm Therapy incorporates a therapeutic clinic within an urban farming community site, and focuses on multi-stressed family systems and the larger community system. The goal is for systemic change within the family and the community by creating positive relationships and personal acceptance. Farming has traditionally been a family endeavor which makes it a unique environment to be utilized as metaphors for family systems, their interactions, behaviors, and structure. Multi-stressed families have socioeconomic hurdles that complicate their ability to adjust to change and crisis in their family. Farming addresses such hurdles by offering economic sustenance, increased physical health, and community acceptance. …
