The Diversification Of The Us Airline Pilot Career Field: Perceptions Of Collegiate Flight Students., Irene Miller, Timm Bliss

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

There will be a tremendous need for commercial pilots over the next ten years. To maintain a pipeline of pilots, a US airline announced a diversity initiative in March 2021 to operate their own flight school with the goal of hiring thousands of pilots, at least 50% of them women or people of color. In December 2021, 80% of the airline’s inaugural class of 30 flight students were women or people of color. In 2022, several other airlines launched similar initiatives. The purpose of this study was to identify perceptions of collegiate flight students regarding these airlines’ new training and …

Creating The Next Generation Of Aviation Professionals: Creating Diversity In The Next Generation, Jason T. Lorenzon

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Covid-19, mandatory retirement age, the 1500 Hour ATP rule and lack of future aviation professionals has lead to a global industry crisis. With the boom of the 1990’s, 9/11, the Great Recession, Covid-19, the lack of younger individuals dedicating themselves to the study of aviation has led to a current crisis of a lack of aviation professionals ready to serve the industry currently and in the future. Lorenzon will trace how the work force shortage started well over twenty years ago. Boeing and Airbus both predict that over 2.2 million new workers including over 600000 pilots will be needed. Yet …

Black Stem Mentors Matter: A Qualitative Case Study Examining The Contextual Factors Of Mentoring Relationships In Stem At A Private Hbcu That Contribute To African American Student Persistence Within Stem Majors, Brittany Chambers

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

As science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields continue to drive the nation forward, there remains a need for more diversified STEM minds. While there have been many interventions geared toward supporting minorities at predominately white institutions (PWIs), seldom do researchers investigate where African American STEM students experience the most success, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Therefore, this qualitative case study aimed to examine the contextual factors that make up mentoring relationships in STEM at a HBCU that contribute to African American student persistence in STEM. An exploratory, qualitative approach was utilized to focus on STEM students at a …

Early Medical Education Exposure To Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, And Justice, Maayra Butt, Natalie Santucci, Kerin M. Claeson

Research Day

INTRODUCTION: The United States currently stands as an epicenter for different identities noting variations across people in ethnicity, religion, gender, and socioeconomic status. Further intersectionality among these identities creates a diverse population of individuals subsequently reflected in the field of healthcare, one of the largest systems that encompass modern society. Medical education plays a notable role in the progression of healthcare as students are the early implementers of future healthcare systems. While it is known that early exposure to cultural humility and diversity allows students to learn and grow as future providers, exposure during professional training is often limited.

English Is Not Dead! Long Live English: Teaching The Evolution Of English And Inclusive Communication Via Online, Face To Face Or Hybrid Instruction, Teresa Marie Kelly, Stephanie Thompson, Sheryl Bone

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

When popular media and many individuals discuss changes in English, some erroneously contend that the language has always been the same and changes amount to little more than “politically correct woke liberalism” desired by only certain people. The English language continually evolves as a natural process that nothing can force nor prevent. Field-specific language also changes with increased understanding and knowledge. The variety of English taught to most students also shifts as Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC)/Writing Across Disciplines (WAD) initiatives increasingly focus on Global English rather than the standard of any one country or group. Even informal interactions with …

New Librarianship Symposia Series: Fall 2021

While diversity in the LIS field has made some progress during the last two decades (Kung et al., 2020), the whiteness of the discipline remains a problem (Brown et al., 2018) for patrons and practitioners. One way to address LIS’s whiteness problem is to better prepare pre-service librarians to effectively and respectfully engage with diverse communities (Jaeger et al., 2013) and LIS professionals of color (Mehra, 2020). However, the field still has progress to make in how it discusses diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) issues within LIS curricula (Pawley, 2006). Centering DEIJ topics with a humble and self-critical approach …

Librarians, Outreach And Evaluation: Edia In A Large Urban Public Library, Mariella Colon

New Librarianship Symposia Series: Fall 2021

Although we seek to be more universal in our offerings, libraries DEIA work still centers on simply event programming and collection development.

To talk about meaningful DEIA work today however is acknowledging that true advancement goes beyond events and artifacts. We must evolve this approach to where DEIA values drive our professional development through (1) critical librarianship (2) outreach and (3) responsive evaluation.

The framework for DEIA at a large urban library has three pillars of focus. The first is our librarians. It is important that we acknowledge the work that already exists because to start to review DEIA as …

Setting The Stage For Responsible Design, Wouter Eggink, Deger Ozkaramanli, Cristina Zaga, Nicola Liberati

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Designers have responsibility by the very nature of their activities; bringing new products and services into the world of the user. Recently there is also raising interest in specifically addressing social issues by deliberate design interventions. Within the University of Twente, we strive to shape this responsibility in the context of the design of Human-Technology Relations, combining human-technology interaction with scenario-based, user-oriented product design. The research groups associated with design have each developed their own perspective on how to implement this responsibility in design research and practice. Three different design strands, each of which are strengthened with methods and tools. …

Diversity In Argumentation Theory, Claudio Duran, Eva Hamamé

OSSA Conference Archive

There is still a high degree of expectation that argumentation should be understood from the perspective of the logical mode of reasoning with little attention to intuitions, emotions and physicality. Our proposal intends to develop a comprehensive understanding of argumentation from the perspective of Michael Gilbert’s Theory of Multi-Modal Argumentation. This approach allows the introduction of diversity in Argumentation Theory, investigating in depth the relations between logic, intuitions, emotions and physicality in cases of argumentation.

Exploring The Ongoing Diversity Issues Embedded In Product Design, Franziska Conrad, Gary Underwood

Learn X Design Conference Series

The Fourth Industrial Revolution offers great opportunities and challenges to the UK design economy. The emphasis on communication and connectivity, together with new disciplines and new markets derived from technological, political and social change, makes it all the more crucial that the future design industry is infused with a wide range of skills, experience and perspectives. Lack of diversity is hindering that process, and this is especially true in product and industrial design – an industry which is 95% male with no measurable black contingent, according to current figures. Focusing on gender imbalance and opportunities for black, Asian and minority …

The Use Of Diverse Young Adult Literature In High School Classrooms, Lauren Mohler

Scholar Week 2016 - present

Although young adult literature (abbreviated YAL) is increasing in popularity, its benefits in the classroom are lacking in research, particularly in large-scale studies featuring both qualitative and quantitative data. Furthermore, as our world continues to become more diverse, students can not only connect with characters like themselves but also learn to appreciate others from diverse backgrounds through reading YAL texts, which are proven to increase students’ engagement with texts. To better analyze if young adult literature is being used in secondary English Language Arts classrooms and how frequently the various facets of diversity are being considered when choosing texts for …

Breaking Through The Sexed Glass Ceiling: Women In Academic Leadership Positions, Sheila Smith Mckoy, Dawn Michelle Banauch, Keisha Love, Susan Kirkpatrick Smith

Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings

In 2009, Patterson, Kirschke, Seaton and Hossfeld revisited the ongoing conversation about gender inequity and inequality in higher education. Their work entitled Challenges for Women Department Chairs (New Prairie Press, 2009) focused on the numerous gaps – salary, promotion, discrimination, harassment -- that define women’s experiences in academic leadership. The emerging trends in academia still suggest that the work that they started in 2009 continues to be a vital concern for women in academic leadership positions. Very little research exists in relation to the intersectional conversations that need to occur when these gendered gaps are coupled with other aspects of …

Identifying And Developing More Culturally Sensitive Diverse Leadership Measurement Prototypes, Joshua Thompson

Scholars Week

Chin and Trimble (2014) describe the need for a new culturally resonant model of leadership. A new model should present a more diverse and globally based perspective. Sixty-four characteristics of leadership were derived from both the current literature on leadership and from structured interviews and focus groups obtained from Western and non-Western samples. The current research is part of an ongoing study regarding cultural differences in what are believed to be the necessary characteristics of outstanding leadership. Participants included 90 students enrolled in a leadership courses at Western Washington University and Adelphi University. Participants completed an online survey in which …
