Break Their Lineage, Break Their Roots: Investigating The Chinese Government’S Relationship With The Uyghur Population To Determine The Potential For Terrorism And Genocide, Anya Veinberg
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
History is wrought with war, crime, and persecution. After nearly every conflict, world leaders vow to never let something similar happen again. Yet, history seems to repeat itself, and so do its conflicts. The Holocaust claimed the lives of millions of Jews and seemed to set a precedent of a modern threshold of evil. How many people would argue that an event strikingly similar to the Holocaust is happening right now in China?
The Chinese government is currently committing acts of violence and faith and race-based discrimination against the Uyghur population.
This work analyzes the interaction between the Chinese government …

Providers cannot adequately assess health risk factors or deliver culturally competent care without SOGI data knowledge.
Aims
The aim is to collect SOGI data during intake to implement a standard of care to promote LGBTQ health outcomes and decrease marginalization.

Exploring The Correlational Relationship Of Interpersonal Discrimination And Leader-Member Exchange, Bryan Wesley T. Hamilton
Exploring The Correlational Relationship Of Interpersonal Discrimination And Leader-Member Exchange, Bryan Wesley T. Hamilton
Student Research Symposium
Stigmatized individuals use several compensatory strategies to offset the negative impact of interpersonal discrimination in the job application process, including increased positivity, providing individuating information, or identity disclosures. Using interviews and surveys, we aim to expand this literature by examining how these processes unfold after stigmatized individuals have gained employment and are interacting with coworkers. These compensatory strategies can have varying impacts on targets’ workplace relationships, job satisfaction, overall performance, and psychological and physical health outcomes. Leaders and other powerful organizational members can mitigate these negative outcomes and improve employee well being through leader member exchange and perceived supervisor support. …
Climate Inaction As Discrimination Against Young People, Nathan Brett
Climate Inaction As Discrimination Against Young People, Nathan Brett
The Canadian Society for Study of Practical Ethics / Société Canadienne Pour L'étude De L'éthique Appliquée — SCEEA
As many young people are now making clear, they are being subjected to extraordinary risks of harms because of government inaction on climate change. In a previous paper, I argued that those who accept climate science have an obligation to join forces with others in pressing for adequate policies. Given what is at stake, it is quite wrong for individuals go about their everyday lives while ignoring the problem. This is not a vague obligation to future generations, nor is it an obligation that is opaque to common-sense morality. This paper is a commentary on Greta Thunberg’s brief but powerful …

Stuart Hall & Theory Of Representation In The Media: Exploring Get Out And Candyman, Lashanna Bryant
Capstone Showcase
Media representation has aided in creating a toxic manifestation of what it means to be Black in America. More specifically, the exploration of Black characters in horror films has opened many doors to hidden racism, discrimination, and oversimplification of their culture and their value in society. In looking into the films Candyman and Get Out there is a clear progression throughout the early 1990s to the mid 2010s that detail a very rapid change from taking a Black character from a background role to the main character.

Doctor Interaction: Is There Discriminatory Treatment At Play?, Jade Meekin, Kennedy Skipper
Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference
While research on healthcare disparities exist, specifically about racial disparities and pain, no studies have explored how these implicit biases impact young adults and their social interactions with their doctors. This study explored how race, age, and gender impacts the way that their medical professionals interact with their patients. A survey was sent out to many students of Purdue University where they answered various questions regarding their doctor visits. African American participants reported feeling as though their medical doctors were unwilling to pursue more extensive or serious treatment when compared to the responses of Caucasians, Asians, and other ethnicities. A …

Addressing Lapses In Medical Education In Relation To Lgbtqia+ Healthcare Disparities, Daniel Pinto, Aubrey Olson D.O.
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
As the LGBT community gains more visibility and acceptance, the individuals identifying as LGBTQIA+ have been increasing. Unfortunately for this community, healthcare disparities for LGBT individuals continue. In fact in a national online survey done with LGBTQIA+ physicians, 65% had heard discriminatory comments made towards LGBTQIA+ patients, and 34% witnessed discriminatory care given to LGBTQIA+ patients. (Bonvinci) Rose Chapman, a senior lecturer at Curtin University Nursing School, contributed this discomfort that medical professionals seem to have with LGBTQIA+ families with socioeconomic background such as religious beliefs or familiarity with the topic. (Chapman) Nevertheless, another study published by the Medical Journal …

The Diversity-Validity Dilemma: Implications From The Ricci V. Destefano U.S. Supreme Court Case, Juan M. Madera, Jeanna Abbott
The Diversity-Validity Dilemma: Implications From The Ricci V. Destefano U.S. Supreme Court Case, Juan M. Madera, Jeanna Abbott
International CHRIE Conference-Refereed Track
One of the most critical problems that hospitality firms face in selecting employees is that the use of cognitive ability tests and other valid predictors of job performance lead to subgroup differences between majority and minority group members. The recent Ricci v. DeStefano U.S. Supreme Court case provides new implications for the adverse diversity-validity dilemma. This paper seeks to bridge areas that have not been discussed in unison, including the costs of employment discrimination claims, the validity-diversity dilemma, and disparate treatment v. disparate impact under the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, and alternative selection methods.

The objective of this study is to examine the ways in which the government of Ethiopia has been dealing with the spread of HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia and suggests the ways in which it can improve its strategies. More specifically, the study tried to investigate the …

What Do You Do When The Law Doesn’T Work? Adult Educators’ Role In Fighting Workplace Discrimination, Ann Brooks, Tamara Clunis

An analysis of research suggests that ethnic/racial group members lack informal access to developmental opportunities in the workplace.
