Women In Student Leadership: How Group Makeup Changes Communication Style, Katie A. Kuckelheim Apr 2019

Women In Student Leadership: How Group Makeup Changes Communication Style, Katie A. Kuckelheim

Student Symposium

Genderlect theory (Tannen, 1990) examines the differences in communication style of men and women and suggests motivations for those differences (Tannen, 1990). In addition to internal motivation, research has examined other ways in which communication style may change depending upon the gender makeup of the audience. This study sought to determine if there are differences in preferred communication and leadership styles of female student-group leaders based on gender makeup of those groups. Method: 31 undergraduate leaders from student organizations across Ohio Wesleyan’s Campus were surveyed about their leadership and communication styles as well as information about the gender makeup of …

Examining Effective Provider-Parent Communication Of Bad News, Charmarie Adkins Apr 2018

Examining Effective Provider-Parent Communication Of Bad News, Charmarie Adkins

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

This study will examine patient-provider communication from a parent’s perspective. Research shows communication between patients and providers to be important; however, when a child is too young to understand their diagnosis, the parent must be the focus of the patient-provider communication process. Parents often report not having effective communication with their children’s physicians, especially when the doctor shares bad news about the child’s health. The need for effective communication becomes especially important when the provider must give the parents important information to help them make the best decisions about their child’s current and future health decisions. This research project seeks …

When Fish Speak English, Heidi Siegelbaum Apr 2018

When Fish Speak English, Heidi Siegelbaum

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

“What did you just say?” This is the world where cognitive psychology, neural linguistics, risk communication and prose meet the hard sciences. In the Salish Sea, people are aching for meaning, narratives, tools and pathways to help protect what they love or what lines their wallets... but only if they understand the value of Puget Sound as a biological place, a community, an economy and a braided culture. The pathway from data to knowledge to understanding to action is a circuitous and long path which starts with clear communication and first and foremost, understanding our target audiences. These are the …

Pocahontas The Eco-Feminist, Kari J. Slone Apr 2017

Pocahontas The Eco-Feminist, Kari J. Slone

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

“Pocahontas the Eco-Feminist” is an Eco-Critical analysis of the Walt Disney film Pocahontas. A close examination of Marianne Dekoven’s “Why Animals Now?” was conducted in order to fully understand the relationship humans, mainly women, possess with animals and the natural world within Pocahontas. Throughout the essay, there is a strong argument of the connection between women and nature on the equal treatment reflected by their loss of control to the male characters’ damaging actions featured within the film. The clear connectedness that is shown amongst the characters furthers research that women are more capable of forming relationships to …

College Students Use Social Networking Sites For Sharing With Friends, But Guess Who Else Is Looking?, Liz Alexander, Fred Mader, Deanna Mader Sep 2015

College Students Use Social Networking Sites For Sharing With Friends, But Guess Who Else Is Looking?, Liz Alexander, Fred Mader, Deanna Mader

Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings

Jobvite, a recruiting platform for the social web, reports from their annual 2012 survey of recruiters that 92% of U.S. companies are using social networking sites (SNS) for hiring purposes (Jobvit, 2012). Career Builder reported in 2009 that 45% of employers were using SNS to screen and research applicants (CareerBuilder, 2009). It is important that faculty and support staff working to place students, and the students themselves, understand the developments and practices in the use of social networking sites for job search and recruiting and the best methods, as well as detriments when marketing themselves. This study examines corporate recruiters’, …

An Exploration Of Gender Roles And Communication In Emerging Adulthood, Francesca Guglielmi Mar 2014

An Exploration Of Gender Roles And Communication In Emerging Adulthood, Francesca Guglielmi

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

What did you say? A common expression uttered by males and females reflects a potential lack of understanding between the sexes. Gender and communication is not a new area, but it is an under researched area within emerging adulthood. Traditionally, development progressed from adolescence to young adulthood, but changes in today’s modern society have altered the typical pattern of "growing up". High school graduates are no longer forced into adult roles—careers and marriage—but are able to spend their late teens through mid-twenties exploring a variety of opportunities (Arnett, 2007). As a relatively new developmental stage, emerging adulthood has not been …

Different Gender-Based Roles On Cooperation: Integrating Differentiated Leader Member Exchanges, Communication, And Trust In Hotel Organizations, Seonjeong Lee Jul 2011

Different Gender-Based Roles On Cooperation: Integrating Differentiated Leader Member Exchanges, Communication, And Trust In Hotel Organizations, Seonjeong Lee

International CHRIE Conference-Refereed Track

This study aims to discover how the relationship between leader-members exchange (LMX) differentiation and cooperation can be moderated by the different gender-based roles. Different gender-based roles are investigated through communication, trust, and perceived fairness in this study. Specifically, this paper proposes that male employees/leaders will less care about (LMX) differentiation, due to their task-oriented characteristics, than female employees/leaders, who are more relationship-oriented. In addition, male employees/leaders are likely to develop cognition-based trust; whereas, female employees/leaders tend to build affective-based trust. Furthermore, this study predicts female employees/leaders represent more cooperation when they are involved with participation throughout the process.

How To Develop Basic Research In Communication Design, P.K. Storkerson Nov 2006

How To Develop Basic Research In Communication Design, P.K. Storkerson

DRS Biennial Conference Series

As a matter of competence and legitimacy, Communication design needs the grounding and knowledge that come from basic research. One of the major impediments to basic research in communication design is the lack of theoretical frames by which to apprehend and isolate valid, significant research questions and define research methods. This paper explicates these problems and proposes solutions by outlining a process of defining theory and method and by proposing a specific ontological and epistemological frame within which to conduct research in communication design.

What It Takes To Design In The Virtual World, Anthony Williams, Willy Sher, Tom Bellamy, Rod Gameson Nov 2006

What It Takes To Design In The Virtual World, Anthony Williams, Willy Sher, Tom Bellamy, Rod Gameson

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The operational differences which result from using different electronic communication media and its impact on generic design skills have been the basis for the research reported in this paper. The outcome of this research is the development and mapping of generic skills profiles for virtual design teams and the designers who work in them. The research findings also identify changes in generic skills profiles between the traditional mode of team design as well as the different operational states of current and future ICT environments. This paper examines design team activities, processes and skills occurring in co-located environments and links these …

Notions Of Practice: Design As Facilitation For Interactive Social Systems., Penny Hagen Nov 2004

Notions Of Practice: Design As Facilitation For Interactive Social Systems., Penny Hagen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper introduces the notion of ‘design as facilitation’ identifying some of the places it features in current research, and how it informs design of interactive social systems, such as multi-user communication technologies. This research is motivated by the shift in focus from the technical to the social in technology. A parallel shift in the notion of design practice is suggested in the move to understand interactive systems in relation to users as seen in design theory and interaction design research and methodology (Dourish 2001), (Preece et al 2002), (Winograd 1997). By examining the commonalities that exist in four different …

The Role Of Designer-Client Communication In Determining Product Appearance., Nathan Crilly, James Moultrie, P John Clarkson

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper reports on a series of interviews with practising industrial design consultants. The difficulties they encounter in communicating with clients on the subject of product appearance are discussed. The effects on the design process, manufacture and subsequent marketing of the product are explored. A preliminary tool is presented for communicating on the subject of consumer response to product appearance. Designers’ views on how this might assist in communicating with their clients are discussed. In closing the paper, suggestions for possible future work are presented and conclusions are drawn.
