A Recommender System Against Social Media Addiction Among Adolescents, Adrian Rafael Dc. Bernandino, Karl Dominic L. Rodrigo, Shirley B. Chu
DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
Social media is a dominant and an ever-expanding platform for social interaction and communication. In its popularity, Social Media Addiction (SMA) emerged as an unintended consequence, affecting a handful of users. Recommender Systems (RS) have been proven to be useful in domains such as health and alcoholism prevention. This study develops a prototype RS against SMA using a user’s personality dimensions and status of SMA. The prototype used a user-based collaborative filtering (CF) approach in recommending items. The prototype will also undergo an evaluation phase but this will not be included in the scope of this paper. The RS prototype …

‘Two Sides Of The Same Coin’: Reflecting On People-Centred And Place-Based Culture-Nature Conservation And Management, Suramya Bansal, Melissa Marshall, Clemens Küpper
Talking Heads Seminar Series
The Culture-Nature Journey (CNJ) program at the 2023 ICOMOS General Assembly and Scientific Symposium in Sydney, Australia presented an opportunity to bring together perspectives that were inter-disciplinary, inter-organizational and inter-generational. A program was framed that showcased research and applied works that are being undertaken worldwide, with a priority given to people-centred and place-based solutions. What started as a toss of coin at the commencement of the sessions to demonstrate the inter-relations between culture and nature became an appropriate metaphor to establish the various permutations through the lens of which we explored its heritage dynamics. This presentation by the Emerging Professional, …

Unveiling Parkinson’S: Empowering Our Community Through Awareness, Lindsay Spindler, Lorraine Wilson, Jill Jumper, Donna Walls, Annie Bane, Priscilla Wyatt, Julie St-John
CSKLS Annual Conference
Awareness about situations or conditions has brought many changes to public policy, treatment methods, and community engagement, to name just a few. Awareness also creates a culture of “seeing” people who may feel unseen or dismissed. One particular group that may feel this way are people with Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder primarily resulting from a decrease in dopamine levels. This decrease in dopamine can lead to deficiencies in motor control and cognitive function that can include slow and uncoordinated movement, loss of balance, loss of smell, and decreased cognitive function1. The implementation …

Knock And The Door Shall Be Opened Unto You, Using Strength And Conditioning As A Tool To Open Doors For Ministry, Tim Dornemann
CSKLS Annual Conference
This professional presentation will discuss how the power of meeting a need can open doors for ministry. Christian Sports Performance Ministry utilizes strength and conditioning to encourage, equip, and enable athletes, coaches, and educators to create relationships through which the Gospel can be shared. In areas of the world where current conditioning methods are not commonplace, education on how to enhance physical performance can be very attractive.
In conjunction with Athletes in Action Philippines, Christian Sports Performance has successfully been using strength and conditioning to open doors for ministry since 2011. Initially, a skill-based training system was developed and used …

Ncaa Division Iii Student-Athletes’ Perceptions Of Faith Informed Coaching, Sean M. Strehlow, Nadia Huggard, Ethan Kiggins, Caleb Narber
CSKLS Annual Conference
Over the past several decades, increased scholarly attention has been placed on the role of faith in coaching pedagogy within Christian contexts. However, research on faith and coaching has yet to include student-athletes’ perceptions of their own coach’s ability to integrate their faith. Without the student-athlete perspective on faith and coaching, questions remain about the efficacy of faith informed coaching practices and whether those practices are experienced as intended by athletes. This presentation offers some preliminary findings from a case study conducted on one athletic program at a small, Christian liberal arts institution. These findings include qualitative data from coaches …
Stability And Mobility: A Lesson From The Body, For The Body, Marc Apkarian
Stability And Mobility: A Lesson From The Body, For The Body, Marc Apkarian
CSKLS Annual Conference
ABSTRACT
Whether for activities of daily living, occupation, or sport and exercise, coordinated, orchestrated movement of the body is necessary for meaningful function and motion. The musculoskeletal system is responsible for facilitating functional movement, while ensuring stability and mobility in associated regions of the body. Stability concerns itself with the ability to maintain control of joint movement or positioning, whereas mobility has to do with the ability to facilitate coordinated, unrestricted movement.
In functional movement training, a popular refrain often heard is “proximal stability aids distal mobility”. This suggests that good musculoskeletal stability in the core of the body (near …

Mukha Bhastrika On Reaction Time In Male High School Athletes: A Pilot Study, Malachi D. Ruiz, Matthew D. Ruiz
CSKLS Annual Conference
This pilot study investigates the potential impact of yoga (Mukha Bhastrika) practice on reaction time in male high school athletes. While existing literature emphasizes the importance of reaction time in contact sports and the potential of calming exercises like yoga to reduce it, there remains a gap in the literature focusing on male high school athletes in contact sports. This pilot study utilized a randomized controlled trial with ten male high school athletes. The participants were divided into two groups: one practicing Mukha Bhastrika and the other serving as a control group which simply rested between reaction time tests. Reaction …

Others: A Magazine Of The New Verse And The Correspondences With Amy Lowell, Jeanie Huynh, Andrew Zero, Adrianna Rodriguez Diaz, Liam Anderson
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
This edition presents the correspondences between Imagist poet, Amy Lowell, and main editor Alfred Kreymborg and associate editor William Carlos Williams from the span of an entire decade, 1915-1925. These showcase the relationship between her and those involved in the little magazine Others: A Magazine of the New Verse, which ran for only four of those years, from 1915-1919, with interests of publishing, at the time, unknown authors, outside of the already-known literary circles of the period, hence Others and what made Lowell ultimately decide to cease any involvement in its further editions and anthologizing of any kind after 1916.

Latine and immigrant-origin youth are disproportionately susceptible to experiencing challenges like anti-immigrant rhetoric and racial microaggressions and are also more likely to experience poverty. The current study aims to better understand immigrant teens' experiences with the five social-emotional competencies (SECs). Survey and interview data were collected from ninth graders from an ethnically and racially diverse high school. Bivariate correlations indicated that teens with a stronger sense of ethnic identity and better self-regulation skills displayed better relationship skills. Interestingly, stronger ethnic identity and self-regulation were also related to more social awareness (e.g., sociopolitical efficacy). The links above were in the positive …

Fluorescence Spectroscopy Analysis Of Phospholipids Bound To Bovine Serum Albumin, Daria Kozuch, Jennifer Feussi Kamwo
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
Our research focuses on studying the interaction between bovine serum albumin (BSA), a protein, and phospholipids, LPS, and DOTAP at varying concentrations. We utilize fluorescence spectroscopy to observe the quenching of the tryptophan residues in BSA, allowing us to explore the lipid binding sites in BSA. Through experimental studies, we determine the binding dissociation constant (Kd) and the number of fluorescent binding sites for lipids (n). Our findings provide insights into how different phospholipids, based on their structure, bind to BSA. Understanding these interactions can be used to further study various phospholipids using CIR to understand their molecular interactions with …

“Private Paths To Peace” Examining The Role Of The Private Sector In Peacebuilding Through Disarmament, Demobilization, And Reintegration In Northern Ireland, Chicago, And Colombia, Michael Clausen
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
International efforts to end protracted conflicts have included sustained investments in combatants' disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR). While policy analysts have discussed factors that contribute to successful programs and have reasoned about the macro conditions that facilitate peacebuilding, there is limited information surrounding the factors that account for successful reintegration at the community level. This project considers the impact of entrepreneurship by communities and formerly incarcerated individuals on peaceful coexistence and focuses on DDR from the perspective of Chicago’s 77 official Community Areas.
