Lip(S) Service: A Socioethical Overview Of Social Media Platforms’ Censorship Policies Regarding Consensual Sexual Content, Sage Futrell
Lip(S) Service: A Socioethical Overview Of Social Media Platforms’ Censorship Policies Regarding Consensual Sexual Content, Sage Futrell
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
The regulation of sexual exploitation on social media is a pressing issue that has been addressed by government legislation. However, laws such as FOSTA-SESTA has inadvertently restricted consensual expressions of sexuality as well. In four social media case studies, this paper investigates the ways in which marginalized groups have been impacted by changing censorship guidelines on social media, and how content moderation methods can be inclusive of these groups. I emphasize the qualitative perspectives of sex workers and queer creators in these case studies, in addition to my own experiences as a content moderation and social media management intern for …
The Underrepresentation Of Black Females In Cybersecurity, Makendra Latrice Crosby
The Underrepresentation Of Black Females In Cybersecurity, Makendra Latrice Crosby
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
The significance of cybersecurity methods, strategies, and programs in protecting computers and electronic devices is crucial throughout the technological infrastructure. Despite the considerable growth in the cybersecurity field and its expansive workforce, there exists a notable underrepresentation, specifically among Black/African American females. This study examines the barriers hindering the inclusion of Black women in the cybersecurity workforce such as socioeconomic factors, limited educational access, biases, and workplace culture. The urgency of addressing these challenges calls for solutions such as education programs, mentorship initiatives, creating inclusive workplace environments, and promoting advocacy and increased awareness within the cybersecurity field. Additionally, this paper …

Ur-510 Exploring The Impact Of Wavelength In Non-Invasive Blood Glucose Monitoring, John E. Oakley, Tahsin Kazi
C-Day Computing Showcase
Diabetes and metabolic diseases are some of the most crucial health issues of the 21st century. Monitoring blood glucose, the lead indicator of these diseases is a cumbersome process of constantly drawing blood or using subcutaneous needles. However, new technologies have emerged for non-invasive blood glucose monitoring that uses spectroscopy, which involves emitting light and capturing patient data with cameras. These new devices remove the cost of multiple tests, reduce the risk of skin conditions, and create more patient-friendly solutions. However, the hardware variables of these devices have not been tested thoroughly. One such avenue is via laser wavelength, which …
Islands Of Suppression: Japanese Internment In Hawaii Vs. West Coast 1941-1945, Carson Brown '24
Islands Of Suppression: Japanese Internment In Hawaii Vs. West Coast 1941-1945, Carson Brown '24
Senior Research Symposium
The United States' involvement in World War II resulted in the internment and relocation of people of Japanese descent on the home front. The Territory of Hawaii was comprised of over a hundred thousand Japanese residents, who were also slated to be relocated. By exploring the differences between the military generals placed in charge of the West Coast (General John L. DeWitt) and the Territory of Hawaii (General Delos C. Emmons), the treatment of the ethnic Japanese in the areas shows a broader context of morals and racial profiling in the United States.

Disney, Slavery, And Education: How The Conversation Of Racial History Influenced The Depiction Of Uncomfortable Historical Realities, Annika Garwood '24
Senior Research Symposium
Looking to theme parks in the 1990s in Virginia, one can see the attempt to implement racial history in the conversation of everyday life. Coupled with changing educational standards, there was an obvious attempt to acknowledge the dark parts of America’s past. However, theme parks and the education department faced pushback when that reality was too real and uncomfortable for people to want to talk about.

Daughters Of Sexual Politics: The Fujiwara's Rise To Regency Through Romantic Poetry And Marriage, Gavin Keesee '24
Senior Research Symposium
Through focusing on the patriarchal authority of Heian society, this essay seeks to establish a framework for the Fujiwara reconstructing the Heian political system. The primary idea will be to explain how the Fujiwara utilized poetry and marriage practices to conduct themselves to be integrated into the imperial family. The first section will provide background contextualization regarding aristocratic society, its cultural aesthetic focus, the functionality of the Heian ranking system, and the foundational court government, and explain how all of these aspects relate to the poetry and marriage systems. From there, the discussion will be focused on explaining the structure …
