Creating The Next Generation Of Aviation Professionals: Creating Diversity In The Next Generation, Jason T. Lorenzon
Creating The Next Generation Of Aviation Professionals: Creating Diversity In The Next Generation, Jason T. Lorenzon
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
Covid-19, mandatory retirement age, the 1500 Hour ATP rule and lack of future aviation professionals has lead to a global industry crisis. With the boom of the 1990’s, 9/11, the Great Recession, Covid-19, the lack of younger individuals dedicating themselves to the study of aviation has led to a current crisis of a lack of aviation professionals ready to serve the industry currently and in the future. Lorenzon will trace how the work force shortage started well over twenty years ago. Boeing and Airbus both predict that over 2.2 million new workers including over 600000 pilots will be needed. Yet …

The Importance Of Creation: Lessons From The Collision And Performing Justice Projects, Mariah Johnson
The Importance Of Creation: Lessons From The Collision And Performing Justice Projects, Mariah Johnson
Symposium of Student Scholars
The Collision Project is a performance-based project that introduces young artists to an inspiration which drives them to create their own performative art. During my time participating in Kennesaw State University's 2022 New Connections Collision Project, I had the privilege of working alongside the talented youth graduates in the Department of Justice system. Through my first-hand experience and by examining the works through the lens of Megan Alrutz’s book Digital Storytelling, Applied Theatre, & Youth: Performing Possibility, I learned the importance of personal expression through creation. Projects such as our Collision Project and Alrutz’s Performing Justice Project present highly beneficial …
The Role Of Purpose In Navigating Health And Social Barriers In Marginalized Older Adults, Ameesha Narine
The Role Of Purpose In Navigating Health And Social Barriers In Marginalized Older Adults, Ameesha Narine
Symposium of Student Scholars
A sense of purpose is defined as a “central, self-organizing life aim that organizes and stimulates goals, manages behaviors, and provides a sense of meaning” (Mcknight & Kashdan 2009). Purpose is crucial to guide individuals’ choices and decisions across their lifespans (Lewis, 2020). Particularly in older adulthood, having a sense of purpose is linked with positive overall well-being, including in the physical (Musich et al., 2018), cognitive (Boyle et al., 2012), and socioemotional/psychological domains (Lewis & Hill, 2021). Although a sense of purpose fosters well-being in late life, it remains understudied whether t purpose is a resource for resilience in …

Hollywood Cries For Diversity But What Happens Behind The Scenes, Kikelomo Sanni
Hollywood Cries For Diversity But What Happens Behind The Scenes, Kikelomo Sanni
Symposium of Student Scholars
It’s the year 2022, and we have now seen diverse identities get the representation they deserve on the screen! Hollywood is changing. Marginalized communities get to see characters that look like them be human and not subjected to a stereotype. When we look at the evolution of film, it took a while to get here but that does not mean the work is now done.
Hollywood cries for diversity now, but sometimes still seems to miss the point. In this research, I intend to observe specific diverse screenwriters like Julie Dash and Alice Wu who have won many awards for …
Are Basic Care Homeless Shelters Beneficial To The Homeless, Lucy Karanja
Are Basic Care Homeless Shelters Beneficial To The Homeless, Lucy Karanja
Symposium of Student Scholars
This research aims to analyze homeless shelters that only provide basic care, i.e., food and shelter, to individuals experiencing episodic or chronic homelessness. Evaluating the effectiveness of these shelters and their ability to help individuals overcome homelessness. Research in this area suggests that there are commonly seen factors that result in homelessness, and although there are noted gender differences, these factors include aspects such as mental illness, substance abuse, poverty, illness, disability, violence, and a lack of access to resources, i.e., education, income, affordable housing, social support. All of these are complex on their own to address and only grow …
Hate Crime, Rachael Kimani
Hate Crime, Rachael Kimani
Symposium of Student Scholars
The rate of hate crimes in the United States of America has been growing at an unprecedented rate. This rise in hate crimes results from the dislike towards a certain group, as crimes are committed based on the victim's actual or perceived ethnicity, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, gender, or physical or mental disability. These crimes cause hysteria in the community, breeding a stereotype that results in the segregation of the victimized group. The trends reveal that white males are more susceptible to perpetrating these offenses. Therefore, this research was done to clarify and comprehend who commits hate crimes and their …
Agile Research Team: The Adaption Of Scrum To Academic Research, Sarah Reynolds, Omar Ochoa
Agile Research Team: The Adaption Of Scrum To Academic Research, Sarah Reynolds, Omar Ochoa
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
This project proposes the introduction of agile software development methods into an academic research group, which is one of the first times that agility has been introduced in the research sphere. The agile method Scrum, which has been successful both in industry and the classroom, was adapted to fit the constraints and needs of an academic research group. This new group structure has been coined the Agile Research Team. A traditional, hierarchal research group has limitations in growth and performance, as projects and researchers are all limited in a top-down fashion. This limits the idea generation process, the projects that …

“A Woman ‘In The Snow Among The Clocks And Instruments’”: How Adrienne Rich Reimagined The Lives Of Women Astronomers, Kayla Taylor, Ashley Q. Lear Phd
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Through the lens of historiography, this research examines how the experiences of women in astronomy relate more profoundly than differing historical periods might suggest given metaphors in Adrienne Rich’s poem “Planetarium.” Rich’s poem reimagines common obstacles that female astronomers faced throughout their vocation, conjuring from their lives a new narrative for women in science. Rich uses astronomy as a metaphor for her and other women scientists’ experiences as they struggle to tune out competing personal and professional responsibilities and strive to locate the signal representing purpose and discovery. This presentation seeks to contribute a new perspective in science communication by …

Towards Assessing Organizational Cybersecurity Risks Via Remote Workers’ Cyberslacking And Their Computer Security Posture, Ariel Luna, Yair Levy, Gregory Simco, Wei Li
KSU Proceedings on Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Cyberslacking is conducted by employees who are using their companies’ equipment and network for personal purposes instead of performing their work duties during work hours. Cyberslacking has a significant adverse effect on overall employee productivity, however, recently, due to COVID19 pandemic move to remote working also pose a cybersecurity risk to organizations networks and infrastructure. In this work-in-progress research study, we are developing, validating, and will empirically test taxonomy to assess an organization’s remote workers’ risk level of cybersecurity threats. This study includes a three-phased developmental approach in developing the Remote Worker Cyberslacking Security Risk Taxonomy. With feedback from cybersecurity …

Towards The Development And Assessment Of A Method For Educating Users Into Choosing Complex, Memorable Passphrases, Juan M. Madrid, Yair Levy, Laurie Dringus, Ling Wang
KSU Proceedings on Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
The currently most used method for authentication is the password because it is simple to implement, and computer users are very familiarized with it. However, passwords are vulnerable to attacks that can be mitigated by increasing the complexity of the chosen password, particularly in terms of length. One possible approach to accomplish this is through the usage of passphrases, which can be easier to remember than a standard password, thus reducing the loss of work time and productivity related to forgotten passwords. To achieve the required balance between complexity and memorability, the concept of passphrase categories can be used, i.e. …

Creando La Confianza: Narratives On Mentorship Of Latina Professors At The University Of New Mexico, Maria Vielma
Shared Knowledge Conference
Numerous scholars have investigated the significant role that representation and mentorship play in the success of Latinas and women of color during their journey through higher education, from degree completion to faculty hiring and advancement. However, little research exists surrounding the lived experiences that have shaped mentorship carried out by university faculty, specifically, mentorship carried out by bilingual Latina faculty in higher education. Using a Latina Feminist Epistemology and Oral History Methodologies, this thesis aims to understand the cycle of mentorship via the narratives of bilingual Latina professors at the University of New Mexico. This study demonstrates lived experiences of …
Missing Women Within The National Project: A Transnational View Between Mexico And The United States, Megan Tung-Weston
Missing Women Within The National Project: A Transnational View Between Mexico And The United States, Megan Tung-Weston
Shared Knowledge Conference
This investigation analyzes the ways in which the disappearances of women in Mexico have been used as a political tool of manipulation and oppression of the Mexican people (in particular, women of Indigenous descent). After the Mexican Revolution of the twentieth century, the country entered the modern era with the arrival of global conflicts and technological developments. This transition also brought about various social changes relating to gender, which were both beneficial and harmful for women and Indigenous populations. The construction of feminine identity-what it means to be a woman, in Mexico, in the twentieth century-and the social creation of …
Ethics Of International Surrogacy, Himanshi Arora
Ethics Of International Surrogacy, Himanshi Arora
Shared Knowledge Conference
In this poster I intend to explore the ethics of international surrogacy in India. In a developing nation like India, there are different perspectives on surrogacy along with its advantages and drawbacks. Some see it as a win-win situation, by helping women from an impoverished background to earn money for their families and at the same time helping foreign parents get a child to love and care for. On the other hand, some see it as exploitation and abuse, taking advantage of poor women for the benefit of parents from wealthier nations. From 2005-2015, surrogacy clinics were a booming industry …

“You Can Be Anything You Want": An Analysis Of Gender Roles In Early Childhood Literature, Emily Marshall
“You Can Be Anything You Want": An Analysis Of Gender Roles In Early Childhood Literature, Emily Marshall
Scholars Week
The theme of gender roles is something that shows up in every work of literature. In early children’s literature, the vast majority of these stories portray the most common gender stereotypes, such as girls wearing pink and playing with dolls, while boys are wearing blue and playing with cars and trucks. The families’ roles are also seen in these books. For example, the mother figure is usually seen staying at home with the children and working in the kitchen or outside in the garden, while the father is often portrayed coming home from a long day of work in a …
Role Of Information And Information Providers In Technology Transfer, D. Undersander
Role Of Information And Information Providers In Technology Transfer, D. Undersander
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Technology transfer is an essential component of economic change in society. Developers of new technology often fail to realize that there is a science to technology transfer. This lack of appreciation for the skills involved in information dissemination and in activities necessary to affect a change of action in an audience often severely limits the rate and amount of technology transfer that occurs. Significant differences exist between doing a news release or writing a publication and causing audience acceptance of a new technology. The old standards of expecting adoption of a new technology simply because it “will profit farmers” or …
