Demanding Accountability In Domestic Violence Courts, Johnna Pike Nov 2018

Demanding Accountability In Domestic Violence Courts, Johnna Pike

Violence Against Women conference

This presentation explores whether specialized domestic violence courts are achieving their stated objective of abuser accountability. Domestic violence emerged from the private realm of family life into the public consciousness during the 1970s. Since then, there has been a largely successful movement to reframe domestic violence as a “real” social problem necessitating meaningful criminal justice intervention. Within the criminal justice system, victim and feminist groups have mostly prevailed in controlling the discourse around domestic violence as a gender-based offense. As a result, a criminal court model aimed at empowering victims and at holding abusers accountable has emerged. However, the efficacy …

The Critical Need For Mental Health Education To Be Mandated In New Mexico's Public Schools, Bonnie L. Murphy

Shared Knowledge Conference

Based on a review of research and best practices in mental health awareness and skills, this inquiry project argues for state legislative policies that would require mental health awareness and skills in the K-12 curriculum. Mental health affects individual accomplishments in every stage of people’s lives beginning in early childhood and throughout the life cycle. Prevention and treatment of mental illness plays a key role in the ability of an individual to cope with loss and develop resiliency and perseverance in challenging times and to make better decisions that improve the individual’s life and the lives of those around them. …

Examining The Reasons For And Barriers To Becoming A Police Officer, Sayer-Jane Vermeer, Mark C. Frame Oct 2018

Examining The Reasons For And Barriers To Becoming A Police Officer, Sayer-Jane Vermeer, Mark C. Frame

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

With ever-growing tension between police and the community, both police organizations and communities are recognizing the need and working toward increased representation in police organizations (Brunson, 2007; Szeto, 2014). Despite the effort of many police organizations over the years, the problem of underrepresentation has not improved (Jordan, Fridell, Fagiani, & Kubu, 2009). It has become clear that there is something that has yet to be identified and/or studied preventing underrepresented populations from being interested in or recruited into police organizations. The U.S. Department of Justice and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s 2016 report on Advancing Diversity in Law Enforcement identified three …

Students were tasked to design and model a one-story building to house the University of the Pacific Garden Program on campus. The cross disciplinary team had the students explore an immersive way of seeing the building model by using a …

4b3: ‘This Mad Brute’: Postwar Male Violence And The Pathological Public Sphere, Rebecca Frost Sep 2018

4b3: ‘This Mad Brute’: Postwar Male Violence And The Pathological Public Sphere, Rebecca Frost

Proceedings of Armistice & Aftermath: A World War I Symposium

War provides a space for state-sponsored expressions of violence encouraged – or at least allowed – within the public sphere. During WWI, returning soldiers were welcomed and generally hailed as heroes, especially in comparison with more recent conflicts. Men on the front lines were faced not only with rifles, machine guns, and mortars, but also the effects of poison gas. Such violence and images of ripped and torn bodies were an expected part of a soldier’s life. This daily exposure and indeed the mass media reports on what was happening on the front play into Mark Seltzer’s pathological public sphere …

“Partnering To Understand Undergraduate Research And Writing Longitudinally”, Donna Scheidt, Cara Kozma, Holly Middleton, Kathy Shields

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

In her longitudinal case study of a single undergraduate, College Writing and Beyond (2007), Anne Beaufort investigates several knowledge domains contributing to students’ development as writers. As a team of librarians and writing faculty in research and teaching partnership, we hope to build on Beaufort’s work by examining and elaborating the role of research with respect to writing development by sharing findings from our own longitudinal study of undergraduates’ development as writer-researchers. Specifically, we are interested in the ways in which undergraduates’ research interfaces with their writing practices as they advance through their general education coursework and various disciplines. How …

Thinking Outside The Building: Developing A Library Ambassador Program Across Campus(Es), Lydia C. Gwyn Sep 2018

Thinking Outside The Building: Developing A Library Ambassador Program Across Campus(Es), Lydia C. Gwyn

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

In an effort to address declining university retention rates and to reach students who may not make it to the library for research help, the Sherrod Library at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is in the process developing a peer-mentoring program. This program is one way the library can help the institution in its efforts raise student retention rates and improve student success. Peer learning programs have proven successful in tutoring centers and elsewhere in the university for decades, and research has shown that trained undergraduates are ideal candidates for delivering general reference and information literacy instruction to their peers …

Combatting The Opioid Crisis On College Campuses: A Harm Reduction Approach, Corey L. Lepoudre Jul 2018

Combatting The Opioid Crisis On College Campuses: A Harm Reduction Approach, Corey L. Lepoudre

Celebration of Learning

College aged people are at a high risk of opioid misuse due to several risks including: an increased opioid misuse in people between the ages of 18-25, those who experience daily elevated stress, and those who live in metropolitan areas or in the Midwest region of the United States. Due to these risks, a harm reduction initiative geared toward college populations is beneficial to prevent a further increase in opioid misuse and overdose. A harm reduction approach was used to develop an educational toolkit for Quad City Harm Reduction to conduct a one-hour workshop for college faculty and students. Harm …

The Relationship Between U.S. Prison And Mental Health: A Review Of Literature, Vanessa M. Jordan Jul 2018

The Relationship Between U.S. Prison And Mental Health: A Review Of Literature, Vanessa M. Jordan

McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Symposium

The majority of the population immediately think of “criminal” or “solitary confinement”. However, the prison population is made up of people who were swept up by policy implementation that was used as a form of social control. This systematic literature review explores the relationship between U.S. prisons and mental health using four main themes: the history of US prisons, race in prison, gender in prison, and mental health in prison.

Pedagogical Design Research For University Police Uniforms, Brooke Brandewie, Injoo Kim, Myoung-Ok Kim, Robin Engel, Kevin Karpiak

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper explores issues and opportunities for new university police officer uniform designs by utilizing a User-Centered Design Methods course as a qualitative pedagogical research approach. As a way of introducing problem-based learning, we brought the uniform redesign project to the junior level class in the School of Design. Since the design brief focused on university police, we viewed this as critical since students are key stakeholders of the uniforms. From the students’ interviews with the officers, key themes were identified about the current uniform items (i.e. hats, shirts, vests, pants, hats, and accessories) among other uniform topics. Findings indicated …

Title IX protections have provided a much-needed resource for addressing sexual violence on campus. However, the benefits of Title IX may not apply equally to all students in practice. This workshop will explore strategies for addressing sexual violence in lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ+) communities. How can we improve support for LGBTQ+ students? How effectively does Title IX address same-sex violence – and might this shift under the current administration? What other policy and programmatic options would support students in these communities? Workshop participants will discuss and strategize around these and other contemporary challenges for supporting LGBTQ+ survivors …

Wrongful Convictions By Police-Induced False Confessions, Kayli Ahuja May 2018

Wrongful Convictions By Police-Induced False Confessions, Kayli Ahuja

Celebration of Learning

Wrongful convictions have two main negative effects on society: (1) innocent people are imprisoned, and (2) the real perpetrators are allowed to wander the streets. In order to analyze this issue, this presentation discusses police interrogation tactics (specifically when using the Reid Technique), the association between police interrogation tactics and false confessions, the association between false confessions and wrongful convictions, ways in which wrongful convictions affect communities and their members, and possible ways to mitigate this problem. Although current police interrogation tactics can be useful at eliciting confessions, interrogation methods must be reformed in light of evidence that police-induced false …
