In this presentation, Patti Condon discusses how we, as information professionals, can tailor our messages to be more effective when we talk to researchers and students about data management.

We are seeing the library take on larger roles in data services evidenced by hiring new positions to meet the emerging data needs of our users. In many cases, however, responsibilities for working with researchers and students on areas related to data services are increasingly being added to the mounting duties of librarians who serve in liaison roles, scholarly communication librarians, or science librarians. Upholding values of diversity and inclusion in our libraries sometimes requires concrete measures that go beyond the delivery of information resources or services. One instance of this occurred at Dartmouth College in 2014, when a group of students discovered and subsequently protested the use of the phrase “illegal aliens” in the library catalog’s controlled vocabulary. Librarians at Dartmouth, awakened by the student protest, guided the students in submitting a petition to the Library of Congress to change the heading, which later inspired members of the American Library Association to lobby on their behalf. In the book, The American College Town, author Blake Gumprechet claims that college towns are often seen as spaces that are more progressive and open-minded than the surrounding areas. However, a look through the Marshall University Archives reveals that this wasn't always the case for Huntington's campus. This presentation discusses the ways that representations and discussions of minority student groups have changed over the course of Marshall’s history. By looking at a collection of articles published in The Parthenon during the 1960’s, my paper is able to discuss some of Marshall's past.

The present literature review examined data from 10 studies that examined the benefits of pet therapy and well-being. Florence Nightingale, a pioneer of nursing, recognized these benefits in the early 1800s when she used animals to provide support to mentally ill patients. Since then, pets, but mainly dogs, have been used across various populations and in numerous settings such as with geriatrics in nursing homes, in disaster relief, with war veterans suffering from PTSD, with inmates in correctional facilities, with terminal patients in hospice care, and with pediatric patients in the hospital setting. Nurse education in Higher Education aims to prepare student nurses to develop their abilities to integrate theory taught within the classroom into their clinical or practice placement. A collaborative, qualitative research project was undertaken between the University of South Carolina Aiken, USA and University of Hertfordshire, UK to explore, compare and evaluate the influence of Academic Professors/ Link Lecturers* in enabling 1st year student nurses to make the connection between theory and practice. The study was informed by current literature on theory-practice, Academic Professors/ Link Lecturers and student nurses’ experiences and perspectives.
