The Relationship Between Economic Growth And Eucation In Albania, Marie Guma Nov 2014

The Relationship Between Economic Growth And Eucation In Albania, Marie Guma

UBT International Conference

Albania as a middle-income country has faced an ongoing economic growth even though economic crisis have stroked world’s economy. The economic growth itself explains at the same time the increase in a nation’s welfare by all means of it. However our main focus is the effect that education level of individuals has on the economic growth of Albania. Literature review states that investment in education directs into the formation of a qualified human capital, compared to physical or social capital and that makes a significant contribution to economic growth. So the study will briefly explain the reasons behind the economic …

On The Role Of Gis Technology In Geospatial Education (Qgis Vs Argis), Shkelqim Kuka, Jozef Bushati

UBT International Conference

In the teaching of modeling concepts and spatial analysis, a major role play technologies and software. Anyhow main aim at the education is the teaching of concept independently on what kind of technologies and software will be used. The latter might be grouped in two categories: the commercial software and Open Source software. In this article emphasises the role of GIS technologies at the process of teaching and it is fulfilled an analysis advantages adn disadvantages between both software: commercial software ArcGis, and so called “Open Source” QuantumGis. Taking in to consideration the financial possibility of the educational institutions and …

Visualizing Mechanics: Educational Videos Demonstrating Core Mechanics Concepts, Camilo Schrader, Jeffrey Rhoads, Charles M. Krousgrill, Stephen Alex Stamm, Elizabeth Bushman

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

There has been an increased interest in using technology to relay information over the past 20 years. This interest has been reflected in the way the internet has expanded to incorporate nearly-uncountable numbers of blogs, streaming videos, and discussion forums. Recent research has shown that younger generations of students prefer internet-based platforms such as these to communicate and learn, as they are congruent with a visual style of learning. The present study seeks to fuse the predominantly reflective and intuitive methods found in a traditional lecture with the more visual and active modes of learning to provide a larger range …

A Closer Look At Relational Aggression, Tara M. Patton May 2014

A Closer Look At Relational Aggression, Tara M. Patton

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

This research examines relational aggression and its increasing prominence in our culture today, specifically with school-aged children. Relational aggression, behaviors that inflict harm through manipulating, damaging, or controlling of relationships, has been proven to be an issue, but it is not easily recognized. Research has found a majority of schools do not mention relational aggression in their bullying contracts. Rather, schools focus on physical aggression, which leads to uneducated students and adults on the issue examined. This research discusses the definition, affects, causes, and needed preventions of relational aggression. Studies found that many aspects of an individual’s life work together …

Equal Access To Education, Rachel J. Yutzy, Tina M. Benjamin, Jessica L. Dickhoner Apr 2014

Equal Access To Education, Rachel J. Yutzy, Tina M. Benjamin, Jessica L. Dickhoner

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

The purpose of our research study and presentation is to identify key factors in access to education in three regions of the world. We looked into access to education in China, India, and the United States (urban) education systems in order to understand the barriers within each educational system. The Chinese educational system has been seen as an exemplary model of education, with the majority of students excelling in their work. However, many different factors contribute to disparities in access to education such as social status, economic background, and ideology. India is a prominent global economic leader, yet struggles with …

Considering A Model Of Support For At Risk Children In Rural Appalachian Communities, Jenna Eatmon Wallace Mar 2014

Considering A Model Of Support For At Risk Children In Rural Appalachian Communities, Jenna Eatmon Wallace

ASA Annual Conference

Many children in rural Appalachia are at risk for school dropout, substance abuse, risky sexual behavior and mental health disorders due to sparse resources and limited support systems within the family and the community. The resources that are available to assist children in rural Appalachia may be underutilized due to limited understanding of resource availability and other limitations (e.g., geographical, limited finances). The purpose of this presentation is to discuss methods of building healthy communities for children at risk through accessing a “natural helper framework” inherent in many Appalachian communities. The presentation will discuss accessing religious communities, extended family care, …

A Qualitative Life Course Study: Significant Life Events In The Lives Of Appalachian First-Generation College Graduates, Peggy Henderson Murphy Mar 2014

A Qualitative Life Course Study: Significant Life Events In The Lives Of Appalachian First-Generation College Graduates, Peggy Henderson Murphy

ASA Annual Conference

Traditionally, the Appalachian region has struggled with poverty and isolation. Although in recent decades many of the outer Appalachian counties have stabilized economically the central region of Appalachia that includes West Virginia, southeastern Ohio and Eastern Kentucky continues to have the highest concentration of distressed and at-risk counties in the country. One of the most effective ways of combating poverty and isolation is through education, yet, educational opportunities for Appalachian youth have been limited. This study used a qualitative approach; six Appalachian youths who had either recently graduated from university or who were in their junior or senior year of …

The Combination Of Organization And Emotion: An Immediate Free Recall Task, Christopher O. Hunt Mar 2014

The Combination Of Organization And Emotion: An Immediate Free Recall Task, Christopher O. Hunt

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Both organization (e.g., semantic-relatedness) and emotional valence have been found to lead to better memory as seen through the superior recall of semantically-related and emotionally-valenced lists. However, research suggests that these two factors may not only lack an additive effect when combined, but may result in worse recall. Based on this research, we hypothesized emotion would hinder recall of a semantically-related list by impairing the relational processing that usually benefits recall of semantically-related material. This hypothesis was supported, as it was found that emotional valence resulted in reduced recall in a semantically-related list. This finding may have important implications for …

Epics: Broadening The Pathway Into Stem, Mindy Hart, Patrice M. Buzzanell, William Charles Oakes, Carla B Zoltowski Mar 2014

Epics: Broadening The Pathway Into Stem, Mindy Hart, Patrice M. Buzzanell, William Charles Oakes, Carla B Zoltowski

ADVANCE-Purdue Gender and STEM Research Symposium

The Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) program was co-founded at Purdue University in 1995 and has since spread throughout the United States and globally with inroads into K-12 education through EPICS High. This presentation offers a synthesis of research findings and interventions gleaned from several datasets about students’ and alumni’s reported experiences with EPICS and the consequences of their participation. In particular, this presentation discusses the ways in which EPICS provides a different vantage point on the underrepresentation of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). Specifically, researchers have been tackling this issue of underrepresentation for decades with …
