Flood Forecasting Using Artificial Neural Networks In Black-Box And Conceptual Rainfall-Runoff Modelling, Elena Toth, Armando Brath Jul 2002

Flood Forecasting Using Artificial Neural Networks In Black-Box And Conceptual Rainfall-Runoff Modelling, Elena Toth, Armando Brath

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The paper presents a comparison of lumped runoff modelling approaches, aimed at the realtime forecasting of flood events, based on or integrating Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). ANNs are used in two ways: (a) as black-box type runoff simulation models or (b) for the real-time improvement of the discharge forecasts issued by a conceptual-type rainfall-runoff model. As far as the coupling of ANNs with a conceptual model is concerned, feed forward neural networks are used as univariate time-series analysis techniques both for forecasting the future rainfall values to be provided as input to the hydrological model and for updating the river …

An Innovative Modelling Concept For Integrated Water Resources Management Linking Hydrological Functioning And Socio-Economic Behaviour - The Hérault Catchment Case Study, South Of France, F. Giraud, S. Lanini, J. D. Rinaudo, V. Petit, N. Courtois Jul 2002

An Innovative Modelling Concept For Integrated Water Resources Management Linking Hydrological Functioning And Socio-Economic Behaviour - The Hérault Catchment Case Study, South Of France, F. Giraud, S. Lanini, J. D. Rinaudo, V. Petit, N. Courtois

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper presents a conceptual modelling framework for integrated water resourcesmanagement at the scale of the river basin. A simulator was developed using Matlab/Simulink software toensure the numerical formulation of the conceptual model. The simulator is problem-solving orientedallowing to investigate the responses of the hydrosystem according to various scenarios defined by thestakeholders of the basin. The simulator is mid-way between full-determinist models which are data- andtime-consuming, although more accurate in terms of quantitative outputs, and full-lumped models which aretoo simplistic to account for hydrogeological heterogeneity and realistic impacts of economic developmentscenarios, although easy to implement and time-saving. After having described …

Structures And Performances Of Five Rainfall-Runoff Models For Continuous River-Flow Simulation, M. Goswami, K. M. O’Connor, A. Y. Shamseldin Jul 2002

Structures And Performances Of Five Rainfall-Runoff Models For Continuous River-Flow Simulation, M. Goswami, K. M. O’Connor, A. Y. Shamseldin

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Four black-box-type rainfall-runoff models, namely, the Simple Linear Model, the seasonallybasedLinear Perturbation Model, the wetness-index-based Linearly Varying Gain Factor Model, and theArtificial Neural Network Model, along with the conceptual Soil Moisture Accounting and Routing Model, were used for this study. The models exhibit a considerable range of variation in degree of structuralcomplexity and associated parameter parsimony, with corresponding degrees of complication in objectivefunction evaluation. Hence they represent a family of models suitable for application in both developed anddeveloping countries. Operating in continuous river-flow simulation mode, these models and techniqueswere applied to six test catchments representing wide variability in geographic location, climatic …

Conceptually-Based Multivariate Simulation Of Monthly Runoff, P. Claps Jul 2002

Conceptually-Based Multivariate Simulation Of Monthly Runoff, P. Claps

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper presents a multivariate extension of a parsimonious conceptually-based AutoRegressive-Moving Average (ARMA) stochastic model for monthly runoff. The multi-station model is aContemporaneous-ARMA (CARMA), which considers separately the serial and space correlation of runoff.Serial correlation is reproduced in individual series by an ARMA model. The ARMA model residuals areuncorrelated in time but correlated in space. Spatial correlation of runoff is then reproduced by generatingcorrelated series of residuals and using them to generate runoff through the individual ARMA models. In theconceptual framework, stochastic ARMA parameters are related to the parameters of a linear system, whichrepresents the watershed filter that produces runoff. …

A Conceptual Model For Integrated Assessment, Markus Knoflacher Jul 2002

A Conceptual Model For Integrated Assessment, Markus Knoflacher

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The challenge of integrated assessment is the integration of scientific and social aspects for the preparation of decisions. On one hand it is necessary to find scientific and technologically sound solutions, on the other hand the results should meet the interests of social groups affected by the particular project. In large projects it is also necessary to consider the effects on sustainable development. The bandwidth of the different aspects is in practise confronted with problems in acquisition of data, inhomogeneity and incompleteness of information about the actual conditions and the effects of the project. To solve the task in a …
