Here Comes The Sun: A Study Of Insect Ecology During Ohio’S Solar Power Boom
Here Comes The Sun: A Study Of Insect Ecology During Ohio’S Solar Power Boom
Stander Symposium Projects
As the world’s population and demand for energy continues to increase, we are also experiencing a rapid increase in renewable energy, such as solar power. Ohio is in the midst of a large solar boom, in which many solar fields are converted to something called “solar prairies.” The native, flowering vegetation in a solar prairie is meant to attract pollinators to boost the ecological value of the land. As solar prairies continue to surface in Ohio, we are still facing a large knowledge gap regarding (1) the effects of solar arrays on insects and (2) the best management practices for …

Tree Damage Patterning In Alaskan Forests, Emma Barton, Richard Gill, Haden Penrod
Tree Damage Patterning In Alaskan Forests, Emma Barton, Richard Gill, Haden Penrod
Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024
• Tree defoliation (from insect parasites) is not abnormal in the densely forested areas of Alaska, but large outbreak events in recent years have led to cause for alarm.
• To better understand the factors affecting defoliation, we used remote sensing and GIS (geospatial information system) technologies to look at mortality spatial patterns across Hemlock and Spruce forests in southeast Alaska.
• Elevation and proximity to water as well as other factors were considered in determining the impacts of outbreak events due to evidence that changes in landscape can alter parasitism behaviors (Roland & Taylor, 1997).

Quality Expo 2024
Background/Aim: The African American (AA) population is disproportionately impacted by hypertension-related complications. Compared to other races, AAs are at a significantly higher risk of mortality and a three-times increased risk of stroke. AA men have the highest hypertension-related mortality compared to any other race, ethnic group, or sex. In response to this challenge, the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) collaborated with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to prevent, detect and control hypertension among AA men ages 35-64. Henry Ford Health was awarded a 5-year grant from the ACPM and CDC to address hypertension improvement for AA males. Strategies …

Disclosure Of Support Statement: Increasing Student Transparency About Support From Software Like Chatgpt, James Lipuma, Cristo Leon
STEM for Success Resources
Our latest publication in the Journal of Engineering Research introduces the Disclosure of Support Statement (DSS) tool to enhance transparency and student engagement in academic writing. This innovative tool encourages students to openly discuss and reflect on the various human and software supports utilized in their writing processes, such as professors, peers, and artificial intelligence software tools. The DSS tool seeks to initiate meaningful conversations around academic integrity and the educational journey by promoting ethical considerations and fostering critical thinking. Through a detailed pilot study, our research offers insights into student attitudes towards support mechanisms, setting the stage for further …

A Policy Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Tobacco And Vaping Legislation In Adolescents And Adults In New York State, Samina Mian
A Policy Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Tobacco And Vaping Legislation In Adolescents And Adults In New York State, Samina Mian
Integrative Learning Experience (ILE) Theses
This policy analysis ascertained the effectiveness of tobacco and vaping legislation in adolescents and adults in New York State (NYS). The analysis discussed the Adolescent Tobacco Use Prevention Act (ATUPA), which is a tobacco policy aimed at tobacco prevention among adolescents and young adults. A detailed approach was conducted with collected data on tobacco and vaping statistics, including NYS smoking rates, morbidity and mortality rates, and prevalence in both adults and adolescents. Data were collected from the NYS Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and others. The socioecological and CDC Policy Analysis Frameworks were used …

Lynn University Digital Press Books
The GIS Workbook provides students with the basic skills to become proficient in geographic information systems and to apply those skills to any career field. The book, which focuses on the ArcGIS Pro Platform, begins by outlining how to download, symbolize, and download data. Students learn to differentiate between vector and raster data, and the different tools that should be used with each type. Other key skills included are working with projections and using Excel files in ArcGIS. From there, topics advance to intermediate skills like using spatial analyst to perform analysis of environmental problems. Chapters become progressively more complex, …

Archaeologies Of Roads, Tuna Kalaycı
Archaeologies Of Roads, Tuna Kalaycı
Digital Press Books
What happens if we think of roads not only as a static archaeological object but as a dynamic and complex phenomenon?
Inspired by this question, “Archaeologies of Roads” brings together various studies spanning diverse landscapes and epochs. The central premise of the book is to reveal the complexity of the road, be it a modern or an ancient one. The starting point is that the road is not only a container for action but also the action itself; roads are perpetual works in progress, continually shaping and being shaped by the world around them.
Authors contribute with road studies from …
