Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 forced the United States and its NATO partners to be confronted with the impact of hybrid warfare far beyond the battlefield. Targeting Europe’s energy security, Russia’s malign influence campaigns and malicious cyber intrusions are affecting global gas prices, driving up food costs, disrupting supply chains and grids, and testing US and Allied military mobility. This study examines how hybrid warfare is being used by NATO’s adversaries, what vulnerabilities in energy security exist across the Alliance, and what mitigation strategies are available to the member states.
Cyberattacks targeting the renewable energy landscape during Europe’s green …
Smart Solar Microgrid Inverter, Conner Sabin, Mckay Waite, Dakota Goodrich, Tucker Skinner
Smart Solar Microgrid Inverter, Conner Sabin, Mckay Waite, Dakota Goodrich, Tucker Skinner
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
With a major increase in the integration of renewable and distributed energy resources along with the use of solar inverters in microgrid applications, the need for advanced power electronics, specifically smart inverters, is higher than ever. It is desirable for these smart inverters to operate with maximum efficiency as well as provide grid services such as voltage and frequency regulation. A smart inverter design can improve the reliability and resilience of the grid, reduce the cost of energy, and ease grid maintenance. This is done through the management of active power generation and reactive power compensation between the solar inverter …
A Midwest Migration With Endangered Whooping Cranes, Katherine Anne Hill
A Midwest Migration With Endangered Whooping Cranes, Katherine Anne Hill
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
In 1941, the world’s last migratory flock of whooping cranes was just 15 birds strong. Today, that flock has grown to over 500 birds and is increasing exponentially every year. But even as the flock continues to recover, their migratory corridor continues to shrink, due to the destruction of habitat by industrial agriculture, energy development, and other industries.
But throughout the most sparsely populated stretches of the Central Flyway, whooping cranes have some unlikely allies, too.
In Nebraska and Kansas, where wetlands and native prairie grasses have historically been drained, burned, and converted to cropland, some farmers are reversing that …
Missouri’S Chance At Low-Cost Renewable Energy ‘Gone With The Wind’?, Jeff Becker
Missouri’S Chance At Low-Cost Renewable Energy ‘Gone With The Wind’?, Jeff Becker
SLU Law Journal Online
The Grain Belt Express, a large-scale wind energy transmission line that will span across much of the Midwest, may now be blocked from proceeding in Missouri if House Bill 527 passes in the state Senate. In this article, Jeff Becker advocates against the passage of the bill, arguing that it is contrary to the state's public interest because it would deprive Missourians of the substantial benefits the project, both economic and environmental.
Scaling Up: Renewable Energy On Aboriginal Lands In North West Australia, Brad Riley
Scaling Up: Renewable Energy On Aboriginal Lands In North West Australia, Brad Riley
Nulungu Research Papers
This paper examines renewable energy developments on Aboriginal lands in North-West Western Australia at three scales. It first examines the literature developing in relation to large scale renewable energy projects and the Native Title Act (1993)Cwlth. It then looks to the history of small community scale standalone systems. Finally, it examines locally adapted approaches to benefit sharing in remote utility owned networks. In doing so this paper foregrounds the importance of Aboriginal agency. It identifies Aboriginal decision making and economic inclusion as being key to policy and project development in the 'scaling up' of a transition to renewable energy …

Microgrid Technology And The Arctic: Green Renewable Technology Does Relate To The Land, Gerry Dell
Microgrid Technology And The Arctic: Green Renewable Technology Does Relate To The Land, Gerry Dell
2019 Cohort
Microgrids can take power from other energy sources and share their loads meaning there is a less reliance on diesel power generation. Wind mill power generators, solar power (for the summer) and battery storage are fantastic elements for providing consistent power in the Arctic. These power systems have been tried and proven, in all conditions, over many years. Geothermal is another green efficient way to heat homes and businesses in the Arctic. When I worked for Dome Petroleum in McKinley Bay NWT, I was fortunate to work in the most extreme winter weather the Arctic can produce. With global warming …

Concentric Contra-Rotating Dual Shaft Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, Emily Walz, Marcellin Zahui, Andrew Shires, Carl Gilkeson
Concentric Contra-Rotating Dual Shaft Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, Emily Walz, Marcellin Zahui, Andrew Shires, Carl Gilkeson
Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase
A typical vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) consists of two or more airfoils all attached to a single central axis. The wind turbine style most commonly found in renewable energy is the horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) that have a high energy production efficiency in exchange for requiring large amounts of land and air space. Alternatively, a VAWT can function in low speeds and in smaller less typical locations. As a result, novel VAWT designs are researched to improve their energy efficiency. An example of a novel VAWT is the concentric counter-rotating VAWT investigated theoretically using the 2D computational fluid …

The Challenge: Innovation for Refugees and Displaced Populations
One of the great challenges of our time is how to help refugees and displaced populations, and how to prevent the causes in the first place. Every minute, 24 people around the world are forced to flee their homes. That’s 34,000 people a day who leave everything behind in the hope of …
